Title: What's a Unicorn...lol
Post by: A Cyclops named Steve on December 08, 2012, 10:36:06 PM
Ok so in the announcements there is a thread about auto-censoring and the 5 year old in me is currently fighting hard to come out and figure out what those auto-censored words are ;D

The 5 year old inside of me is ready to dare you to type lots and lots of different bad words to see what comes out.

But then the responsible adult in me says that no, you shouldn't do that...I mean, really. We're all adults here, right?

You get to choose who to listen to.   8)

For what it's worth, there's a HUGE list of bad words in the pigg files.

It was for the game to decide what bad words were blocked in player names, or in-game chat.

I won't be posting it, or excerpts from it though, of course.

 ;)

You can test out what's censored by previewing your post...

To my knowledge only the term for humanoid creatures that dwell under bridges and start trouble on the internet is censored.

But I have yet to experiment with the more "colorful" words

Is that a hard filter, or is it a mechanism of the forums I can turn off?  It's cute and all, but I'm an adult, and I use the language I do because I believe words shape how we think.  And if we're afraid to use certain words because we've placed a heavier emphasis on them, and we go to lengths to actually censor those words, what we're basically saying is that we're ashamed of ourselves.

Now don't get me wrong, I believe shame is healthy in certain quantities.  But it shouldn't be as pervasive as the taboo on certain words is.

Yes it's a hard filter, and no, there's no way you can turn it off.

I hope it can't be turned off, honestly. Profanity filters aren't meant for people who use profanity occasionally or maturely, it's meant as an action against people who don't care what impression they make on others, or don't wish to engage in the courtesy of self-moderation. And I know the T-word itself isn't profanity, but it IS the sort of hot-button term that immature people like to throw around, which is the same reason actual profanity is a problem in the first place. It comes down to respect for the people around you, and filters like this are intended to help shield others from the kind of people who don't have that respect.

Whoa... that got deep with no warning. yikes :o

I meant "turn off" more in the sense of how the profanity filters in video games work:  if you leave it on, it filters certain words on your end, and only on your end.  Everyone else gets to see what was spoken.  I don't think I've ever used language here that got caught by the filter because I'm mindful of the fact that this is a PG community.  That's self-imposed, of course, but I think it's a bad sign for a community if you can't trust its members to respect its boundaries.

-shrug-
Whatever.  I fully subscribe to the George Carlin/Lewis Black school of thought when it comes to profanity, but if I need to keep it PG to keep hanging around here, I will.

Ahhh okay, I misread the part about just turning it on/off on your own end. That'd be better, sure. And I certainly wasn't speaking about you or anyone else personally, I hope you didn't think that.

... I was going to say more, but I think we're both saying the same thing in different ways anyway, and I was just reading it wrong due to tiredness, hehe :)

Well, I understand it's probably much easier to code that sort of thing for a client that already has to interpret data from a server on an individual basis than it is for a website.  And given everything else the Titan Network is doing for us, I'm not gonna complain that I can't curse.  But I do think the discussion of profanity and censorship is an interesting one, and a good one to have as a community, especially a community that has to live within certain rules imposed upon us.

For example, I know that my brother and my little sister swear, but I can count on my hands the number of times I've heard them swear.  That has to do with the fact that our parents disapprove of "strong language" and that our shared social context is informed almost entirely by our parents and little to do with our own personal preferences of language.  We each have a "family mode" of discussion in which the profanity filter is checked, and we each enter "family mode" when we talk to each other, even if our parents aren't around.  I do a similar sort of thing when I'm playing video games and not on a selective channel - I don't completely censor myself, but I certainly turn it down.  In a way that's actually me selling out my ideals because I don't believe I should have to guard the way I talk, but I do it anyway because of certain social programming.  Does that make me a bad person?  I sure as hell don't know, but it's definitely part of what makes me ashamed of myself.

Edit:  Yes, this conversation took a sharp turn into Serious Lane.  Feel free to pull it back to Silly Parkway if you'd like.

Hehe... Silly lane... That's where I live!

I'll just say, splippysplannysplopipopilotimus!

I think this may come into play a bit with what you said about when communicating with others (maybe sort of slightly... maybe entirely!)...

I have found that, when I communicate with others, I tend to use their way of communicating to communicate to them.

I think I first noticed it with my grandfather, many years ago. His first language was not English and he spoke in a somewhat broken-English, yet deliberate manner. He was very intelligent, but he spoke in somewhat simple words (due to the difference of language, obviously). And with a very strong accent.
I found myself having the best conversations with him when I (nearly) slipped into that accent and spoke in the way in which he spoke (using the pace and style of inflection that he did). I think there are a bunch of factors there, some of it using the common ground (best way to communicate) and some of it being me quasi role-playing as a form of relating to the other person and accepting that pace and approach as my own.
Another factor just may be the actor approach... I sometimes can't help falling into role-play to relate to things.  ;D

I think this is somewhat true of my use of language in certain situations.
I don't really curse up a storm all that much... but I certainly love using the enormous variety of words that come from "pancake". And my family tends to think of me as using that a lot.
However, I am generally the least likely of my family to use such words in what other people find to be inappropriate times. And I think that is because I do the same thing... If I am attempting to communicate and/or mingle with people that may not like such words... It is extremely easy for me to speak more like them.
Now... if I find it personally important to say things exactly they way I want to no matter what anyone else thinks... then all rules are out the window.
I'm capable of flipping that switch, but I seem to enjoy communicating within other people's styles...
Except for here, of course... where I babble somewhat incoherently in a fashion that no one else really gets or cares to bother to sort through!  :-[ ;D

EDIT:
Ah... boo. For pancake's sake... why is pancake pancaking censored? :P Ah well... there boards, their rules, I don't mind :)

Maybe after we get a result one way or the other from our campaign efforts, we can start up a proper discussion about it. I agree it would be interesting.

Quote
"family mode" of discussion

I do that myself. When I talk with friends it's very relaxed and typically ranges anywhere from PG-13 up to Adults Only. But around my parents, in the office when I used to work in one, and around children I'm much stricter on certain words and topics. I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of, being considerate of the people around you. In fact I think it makes you a decidely good person to be respectful of other people's ideals.

On an unrelated note, I keep expecting your avatar to move, and when it doesn't it makes me think my internet has glitched out. ???

If we're lucky this will be the first and last of my "old guy" posts, but back in my day, trudging thru snow and walking uphill both ways to and from school, Unicorns were fabulous, magical creatures as exotic as dragons, or phoenixes or anything else mythological you care to name.  While I've no objection to the community using the term Unicorn to denote its opposite, a dangerous potentially deadly creature, equally mythological, the name for which starts with T and ends in L, part of me wants to reclaim these names.

The first time I saw a quantified Unicorn was in 1st edition Dungeons & Dragons.  Unicorns have stats?  Who knew?!  Ditto for dragons and everything else.  Patricia McKillip's The Forgotten Beasts of Eld helped me reclaim some of that magic, for at minimum that one book of hers is magic.  If you doubt me, go read it for yourself.

As for the critter whose name starts with T, well there'd been lots said about him, from old Norse tales to J.R.R. Tolkien.

As for the unpleasant person who seemingly picks fights and is unpleasant on purpose, there are numerous terms for such persons, and often the apt term relates to the person's age.  That said, it's true, there are some who'd rather be hated than ignored, even as there are gentle souls who'd vastly prefer to be ignored, left alone, anything but hated.

For those who doubt the power of Names (some might even call them labels), Ursula K. LeGuin knew all about that and began revealed some of the secrets in A Wizard of Earthsea.  If your local cash shop doesn't have a copy, you might find one hidden away in the Children's Books at your local library; I think the purpose in doing that is so only those pure in heart, those honoring the Inner Child within each, can find such magic, and dare I say Treasure.

Good night to you and happy dreaming; for it is long past my bed-time.  I'll be back tomorrow to commiserate with you and celebrate with you, our beloved City of Heroes.   You do know, that's you, right?    Oh! except for those two over there who are quite certain that Heroes is NOT what they are or would ever want to be; and you know what?  That's okay too.  Peace out.
8) P.S. I like this smiley face because I wear glasses, bifocals even.

Yes, this is pretty much the case. We're not trying to take a stance that all profanity is universally bad.

Well, I understand it's probably much easier to code that sort of thing for a client that already has to interpret data from a server on an individual basis than it is for a website.

And it's even easier to use code that's already written, which is what we're doing. :) We're using Simple Machines Forum (http://www.simplemachines.org/) for our forums. It has a word censor feature that works as I described. There's no option to switch it to a mode that can be configured on a user-by-user basis, and while we might consider using such an option if it existed, it certainly isn't worth it for us to code one ourselves.

What's going to inevitably grow from this is when we post to another forum, having become indoctrinated to just use the substitute words instead of the "real" ones, we say something about a "unicorn pancake," and get a resounding  :o  from the regulars, there.

(FTR, I have switched to using the substitute words, here; it's more fun that way, anyway.)

In the Titan universe, unicorns are green-skinned bridge-lurkers.

Pancake is a catch-all (or, catch-most), one purloined from the sillies on the Paragon community staff. It doesn't mean a single word.

OK, I've watched this thread go for three whole pages and I still don't know what anybody is talking about. I feel like this kitten (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dM0TDWA-iY), in essence. So could anyone please explain what you're talking about? What's wrong with Unicorns? What's that thing which "starts with a T and ends in a Y?" Titty? Taffy? Tony? I realise it's probably censored, but at least point me to somewhere that explains it because this whole thing just confuses the hell out of me.

I think the point of the entire thread (other than digressions into humor and silly) is that none of us want to be or be subjected to those persons who seem to thrive on negative attention.  I'm not sure about the letter "Y" but the term I've seen bandied is spelled: T - R - O - L - L though personally I'd rather do without the censorship and labeling.

Oh... That's censored? Weird, but I can see it. OK, then where does "unicorn" come from? Is that like using "rooster" as a means to speak profanity without speaking it? And I don't know where I got the Y. I very likely misread someone's post, or possibly someone misspelled it. I'm sticking with the first option. I wouldn't have called THAT even if I'd read right, though.

As far as having that censored goes, I don't get it. Has it become a big "thing" around these boards that we've been calling each other that? It just seems weird to me to censor it. It feels like censoring "carebear" or "brony" or "noob" or some such. Yeah, OK, it can be used to insult, but I haven't found the Titan Network community to be particularly mean-spirited, and I haven't found the term to be used all that often. And really, all it says is "you're trying to make me angry on purpose" which explaining it really says just as much. I guess I could see it as an attempt to kill the shorthand and so make it too much of a pain for idiots to insult one another when they have to form complete statements, but...

Yeah, seems a bit weird to me.

*edit*
FFS! OK, now I know where the "unicorn thing" came from. I got caught in the filter :)

It's taken me time also to get accustomed to the lingo specific to Titan; e.g. "unicorn" or "pancake" (pancake in lieu of donkey flop or other expletives.)  I'm reminded of Humpty Dumpty's famous line about a word meaning " ...just what I choose it to mean... "

FFS! OK, now I know where the "unicorn thing" came from. I got caught in the filter :)

LOL! Tell me then, because while I knew what word it was replacing, I'm unaware of the origin of that particular substitution.

What I find funny is having to use euphemism when referring to a certain gang that primarily haunts the valleys of Skyway City. Even better was someone talking about their character on another game that was of a certain Rastafarian Horde race. I know it's impossible to filter based on context, but seeing someone talking about their Unicorn Shaman was funny. :)

Long story short:  A couple of months back there were a few people that started very indiscriminately throwing the t-roll word around.  It was getting to the point where we couldn't get three posts into a thread without someone firing off that label, and most of the time, it really wasn't justified.

On a whim, Tony added a rule to the censorship filter.

While it quickly became a running gag, it seemed to do the trick.  Accusations of trolling dropped off almost immediately.

Funny story.

Years back, when the Transformers ARMADA line was on the shelves, their Unicron toy came out in one of the later waves. My wife got one for me at Wal-Mart.

On the receipt, it rang up as Unicorn :D

Thanks to what I've picked up while writing Vickie and the CCCP, I can swear in Romany, Hungarian, Russian, German, a bit of French.

All I got is some High School German and some very rusty American Sign Language - but the swearing and suggestive words in ASL are amazingly funny.  I had a deaf roommate for 3 years, and she taught me all the bad stuff, just so I wouldn't embarrass her in front of her friends by signing something when I meant to sign something else.      \,,/_

HA! No Dutch filter.

It has a Dutch filter, it filters anything that DOESN'T mention drugs, doggy-doo or blue movies as like with Australians, you'd never understand what they were talking about if you filtered the other stuff. True story I used to team regularly with an Aussie in my early days, and actually removed the filter in-game so I could understand what he was talking about.

Remember a tech job tale about that. A certain kind of people apparently couldn't resist coming in and testing the latest contraption by smashing its buttons mindlessly one by one. So the tech put a high-power alarm to trigger instead of the normal purpose of a button, and then the other guy readily stopped testing before asking :-)

There's a big difference between testing something that's ready to go to test and poking at something that isn't ready for test.

If you do it right, you can make good money "button mashing" in the real world.  :)

Like "lager" and "stein?"

When I was stationed in Hawaii, I was ordering from a catalog that carried surplus military uniform pieces from the former Eastern Bloc countries. I was sitting in an open air food court in Pearl City, wearing a shirt from the former East German army uniform shirt when a lovely German couple, I would estimate in their 50s, can up and asked me directions in German. Fortunately, I had taken German in school and could understand what they were asking, so I answered in English (after confirming in German that they spoke English, one of the few things I could remember how to say). They were tickled by the whole situation, even after I explained where I had gotten the shirt. :)

I did read somewhere that the original Czech Budweiser got the naming rights back. Being of Bohemian descent, I'm interested to try it. I'm sure it's not the cow pee we drink here in the States. :)

Well, I've been to the states - Las Vegas/ San Francisco area for a couple of days due some business. And well...I drank one beer at the hotel bar, than never again ;). Your whiskey is okay, that's something someone could drink. But actually nothing compared to real scottish or irish whiskey. But your burgers are so f**king huge! And I loved those buckets filled with chicken wings :D. Well, tbh. all of your stuff is somewhat oversized :D. I once had a meal in the hotel....I had to take it with me and ate that stuff a WHOLE day. It was like neverending food O.o

And yeah, you should really try czech beer! They have a some fantastic stuff over there when it comes to beer ;) You also could try "Porter Cherry". It sounds disgusting (cherry and beer?!) but tastes somehow good.
Title: Re: What's a Unicorn...lol
Post by: dwturducken on December 24, 2012, 05:57:03 AM
Ya know, there is a beer in northern Michigan (lower peninsula) that is made with cherry. The Czech branch of the family is "from" there. I'm sure it's not the same, but the small breweries do make much better beer than the "major" brands. Some day, I'll get back to Europe (I only saw a few towns along the Mediterranean while I was in the Navy), but that area of Michigan is heavily German and Czech. It might get me by until then.

Also, I think the time difference has let us completely take over this thread, at least temporarily. :)
