Great news, well done Misty!

Outstanding article!  They used large amounts of Mercedes' reply (I know most of us were worried it might get chopped up pretty badly), and her argument(s) for the game came through with their full force.

And yes, that's a very interesting shift in direction from NCSoft in terms of their official comments.  It makes sense to me that now that the game is closed (thus altering the legal situation somewhat) and considering the company's financial performance, selling the CoH IP and attendant properties might make sense for them. I have a feeling that any significant monetization is going to look pretty attractive.

YAY!  AMAZING!

Mercedes really outdid herself here.  I just hope that there is something left of the poor woman come re-launch day.   ;D  We're all going to be playing, and poor Mercedes is going to be lying in bed from exhaustion!

Very interesting. The "nothing has been decided" thing is a typical NCsoft non-answer, but it beats "we will not sell, ever", and it's good to see they're starting to catch grief on their home turf.

Anytime you're ready to grow up and be reasonable, NCsoft. We ain't going anywhere.

I like how the local industry analyst is questioning the wisdom of the decision. I would think that would resonant with stockholders.

Oh man, that article is positively scathing.

Of particular note to me is their sudden change of stance; from "exhausted all options" to "nothing had been decided on selling the game" - it's a sudden about-face for NCsoft, carefully worded in true execu-speak fashion to make it sound like the new position had always been their position.

Of course, I welcome the change in attitude.  The mean-spirited side of me wants to call BS and throw their previous statements in their face on account of the execu-speak, but I don't want to harm this new, more agreeable attitude.

Of course, you know what they say about proof and pudding.  We'll see whether this is genuine opening up or just a smokescreen to try and mollify the PR beating they're getting when the IP changes hands.

I'll believe that when I see it - she'll be there with bells on!!

Misty should have the honor of making/reviving the first character in the relaunch of CoH, wherever/whenever that happens.

Aha!  Feel the burn NCSoft... IN KOREA!  The no decision comment is probably just a face-saver, but it certainly beats the public stance of 'no, not ever.'  Eheheh, I am positively giddy.  The two hours of sleep I got last night suddenly seem much less relevant :DDDDDD

Edit:  Okay, I've processed this for real now... though people in the library are looking at me like I've gone batty.

Regardless of their comment's validity, we now know that they cannot take damage on the homefront.  In the face of HUNDREDS of U.S. and EU articles, they only budged with a reaffirmation of their initial decision.  But a single sucker punch from back home and suddenly they're either a) using ambiguous language and fabricating a position to save face or b) actually reconsidering their position.  Either way, we now know their weakness.  Win/win.

As I responded in the other thread:

Excellent!   As a community we can continue 'turning the screws' until we.....

Multiple choice question:

A) Redside:    .... hear the sweet, sweet wails of bitter agony from our most despised foe and wrench the IP from their grasp.
B) Goldside:   .... hear the sweet, sweet wails of bitter agony from our most despised foe... and have someone else wrench the IP from their grasp.
C) Blueside:   .... resolutely convince our foe to part with the IP while ignoring their sweet, sweet wails of bitter agony.

Hell I was thinking "Where can we put the ML statue when the game reopens?"  Would actually be nice to have a Hall of Heroes building in Atlas with some references to her, TonyV and all the other great people fighting in RL for City.

I also really enjoyed the analyst comment of "hard to comprehend...".

Huh.  This might point to why City of Heroes was shut down, but hopefully it won't stop them from selling the IP.  Actually, if they plan on withdrawing from the West (as the article gently implies), maybe they'd be encouraged to sell?

And the comment about "hoping GW2 isn't affected" makes me want to set something on fire.

This article is making the rounds. I've had two friends who are unaffiliated with SaveCoH--though they support our efforts--both link me the article today alone. I want to thank both authors of the article-- Cho Mu-hyun and our very own VV -- for putting together a great interview-based article that really voices our view of things.

This fight is far from over, and if NCSoft thinks we're going to shut up, they've got another thing coming.

Can anyone verify this?:

If so, that makes me smile a bit. If they want out of the market, fine, but setting the whole shop up and blowing it up with dynamite while waving their junk out the window of a helicopter as they fly away should come with some form of punishment, and if that quote's true, as I said, that makes me smile.

It's the same with me, I was thinking so too because they never do this in the past, but maybe they are going to far now after closing so many games. Even someone that never played City of Heroes notice that playing a game from them isn't the best idea when you lose everything sometimes.

This sure seems like the turning point to me. I also think that for the first time, we can really claim some of the drop in their stock prices is due to us. Big dip today after the article hit. I don't think it was all due to the NCSoft West realignment, either.

Also, VV, you can totally stop apologizing to us all the time about not being able to do enough. I dare say that with Titan's continued efforts, you have done it.

Well it was abundantly clear that certain individuals took a great deal of glee and invested a lot of effort into finding whatever little shreds of hope people had, and doing their best to deride said hope into oblivion. They continued to do so on the CoH forums long after they had failed to gain a foothold here on Titan, prompting more than one person to wonder aloud where these clowns would get their jollies once the official boards closed.

So yeah. I have to agree with you.

Well way to go VV!

Oh I bought one of your books. Sorry I am not a big reader and I dont "think" I heard your name until recently but yeah.

Basically some of what I read there like it being unethical to stop making something your making profit on is what I agree with completely.
I guess in a way its a more simple and smarter way of saying what I was thinking lol.

Actually I am gonna do a test. I am gonna Ask Nintendo and demand for a supervisor to answer this question...a hypothetical and they have always answered me back because Nintendo is cool.

Hypothetical - I will be posting the answer back here to see.

Let's say you had a game where its "online" You created this game Eight years ago and to this day you are making steady revenue and a good amount of profit from keeping the game going and even though you are paying the development team to keep making new updates for the game and after all of the other costs. As I said you are still making a considerable amount of money from this game.
Do you think it would be unethical to shut the game down and fire your entire development team without warning and without stating your exact reasons to the public or your dev team?

Gonna go ahead and ask them that....see what they say lol.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBHWHgFKiw4&feature=youtube_gdata_player (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBHWHgFKiw4&feature=youtube_gdata_player)

Lyrics:

Not Dead Yet

Well, I was born too late to be a Rolling Stone I don't know Jerry Lee, I never met John and Yoko Standin' with a strat, I'm rock n' roll's bastard son Go out, get drunk, get wild, have fun

I don't got a million dollars, don't drive a Cadillac Give me half a chance 'cause I'm not dead yet

I'm not dead yet, oh no, I'm not dead yet I'm a mad dog fighting with the wall against my back You better get a bigger gun, I'm not dead yet

I've been machine-gunned, handgunned, hijacked, left for dead Dive-bombed, napalmed, nuclear warheaded Dropped from a jet plane with no parachute Which shot by a firing squad and raped by a business suit

I'm dancin' on a land mine, baby, one leg left And I can still crawl and I'm not dead yet

I'm not dead yet, oh no, I'm not dead yet I'm a mad dog fighting with the wall against my back You better get a bigger gun, I'm not dead yet

Well you're bigger, tougher, meaner, rougher Dirtier and uglier and sneakier and trickier You wanna shoot me with a gun, cut me with a knife Take your bare hands baby, rip out my eyes

You knocked me to the floor then you bit me in the neck, well Hit me again 'cause I'm not dead yet

I'm not dead yet, no no I'm not dead yet Well I'm a wild card hidin' in the middle of the deck You better get a bigger gun, you better get a bigger gun

Well there's a mugger in the alley, there's a sniper in the hall There's a girl at the bar who wants to get me by my balls And the hangman is hangin', if I autograph the noose Lee Harvey Oswald's brother's on the loose

Mafia hit man with a bullet for my neck Some day he's gonna get me but I'm not dead yet

I'm not dead yet, I'm not dead yet Well I'm a wild card hidin' in the middle of the deck You better get a bigger gun, you better get your poison pen

I'm not dead yet, not me, I'm not dead yet Well, I'm a mad dog fighting with the wall against my back You better get a bigger gun, go, go, go

I'm not dead yet, I'm not dead yet I'm not dead yet, I'm not dead yet

Well, I'm a mad dog fighting with the wall against my back You better get a bigger gun, I'm not dead yet

I am not dead yet and will continue the fight!

The Seattle office is where Marketing, Creative Services, and if memory serves, the Aion team is. (Not sure about Lineage.)

Hey, Redside fights Council and Arachnos as much as those self-styled "heroes" do.  Oftentimes moreso in the case of Arachnos, although that has more to do with being unable to walk twenty feet in Cap Au Diable without tripping over some Wolf Spider on lunch break.  Just because they're evil doesn't mean they're villains, and vice-versa.

The baffled analyst made my day. Its independent verification of our belief that CoH was turning a profit, when various commentators were saying we were wrong and they'd call us a waaaambulance.

Hard to accuse a Korean business analyst with no ties to CoH of being biased and deluded.

It seems like those same commentators are still at it over at Joystiq. I've noticed that the exact same gaggle of them that were smugly deriding the CoH player base (http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/02/ncsoft-crushes-the-hopes-of-city-of-heroes-fans/) as whiny self-entitled children who should be happy that they had eight years to play their game are still at it on the Massively article covering this shindig (http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/04/korea-times-quotes-mercedes-lackey-calling-city-of-heroes-closur/).

To me, that they continue to treat the playerbase this way even with outside business analysts questioning the wisdom of the shutdown suggests that they have some ulterior motives for being so negative.

Not necessarily conspiracy, just having a more personal stake in pooh-poohing the CoH crew.

You notice something about that article? It looks to me like they wanted to write it that way.

Hmmm.

I think now might be an opportune time to introduce NCsoft's shareholders---especially Nexon---to a question I posed in my very first comment on this forum: is the closure of City of Heroes, and the apparent retreat of NCsoft from the Western market, a reactionary response to what Kim perceives as a hostile legal climate in the United States? Specifically, did NCsoft feel that the Garriott judgment was unfair, in light of the fact they fired him for what they described as a poor work ethic after he flew into space while his multi-million-dollar game was floundering?

I think it would be very interesting to have a large investor put that question to NCsoft's management and have them respond formally. They have no obligation to respond to us with anything more than their "corporate realignment" drivel, but they cannot dismiss their largest shareholder quite so tritely, and it is entirely possible that Nexon has not pieced that question together yet.

I think I should start off by saying that I feel NCsoft is perfectly within their rights to decide where to do business, and if the legal climate with respect to employment law in this country is not to their liking, they should by all means feel free to develop at home in order to avoid potential future losses from litigation. But that alone does not explain why a company would choose to burn its U.S. assets to cinders. The logical thing to do would be to liquidate those foreign holdings in order to maximize recovery. Now, it may be easy to overlook the burying of a game that was not profitable, as was undoubtedly the case for many of NCsoft's previous closures (though it might well be argued that NCsoft just wasn't patient enough); however, as we all well know, City of Heroes was neither unprofitable nor unpopular. Simply burying a revenue-producing property without recourse to market smacks not of strategic business behavior, but of simple vindictiveness---something more akin to a personal tantrum. And if that were the case, it might raise serious questions about the fiduciary integrity of NCsoft's management.

There's just one problem: all of the above is pure speculation on my behalf, though I actually suspect the staff writers at Korea Times are thinking along similar lines. They have all the facts, and they're certainly not idiots. Elsewhere on the 'net I have read editorials penned by some of the writers who cover NCsoft for Korea Times. One of those editorials lamented the arbitrariness and insanity of our patent system, specifically with regard to Apple's lawsuit against Samsung for infringing on the "look and feel" of the iPhone---an editorial that I, personally, happen to agree with. He cannot be alone. There may well be an undercurrent of resentment in many other countries about the casino-like mentality of our system of jurisprudence. So why wouldn't Kim fall into the same boat?

Maybe he does, but even if the writers at Korea Times suspected that Kim may be on an ill-considered rampage that could be damaging his company's shareholders, they would never dare put those words to print by their own hand: without someone to attribute it to, and with no first-hand experience in the matter, it could easily lead to a libel suit, because it damned sure would inflict harm upon the management of NCsoft.

But what if they could attribute it to someone who had first-hand experience?

Collette, in a post you made on another thread, you claimed to have spoken with an individual who had direct dealings with NCsoft as a developer, and the comments of that individual exactly mirrored my own. While I don't expect that you will necessarily be able to convince that individual to come forward and make a statement to the writers of Korea Times, perhaps you could put out feelers through him to find other people in his circle of associates who also had first-hand experience in the matter and who are not under non-disclosure terms. If one or more such individuals could be persuaded to come forward and make statements about their experiences---specifically, the exchanges they had with NCsoft's management and the timing and nature of management's actions vis-a-vis the Garriott incident---it might give Korea Times the defensive position they need to ask the very question we most want NCsoft's shareholders to see right now.

Mercedes may have given Korea Times a shield they needed to blow open NCsoft's corporate doors (thank the gods she's on our side), but it could be you, Collette, or anyone else who has access to similar people, who can help drive a bunker buster through that door and blow the CoX IP clean out of their castle.

In my experience, if one newspaper in a locality picks up on a story, their competitors follow suit.  I'm hoping that holds true in the Korean press :)

Now that would be just great!!!  Especially if any Korean journalists happen to want to chase this story (not that it's hard to find Titan Network).  I imagine that everything reasonable that can be done to get this covered in the Korean press is being done.  Just that one take-away of "Nothing has been decided" is awesome!!

I was wondering if the article was at least partly responsible for the stock drop as well. We have a whole thread devoted to that graph that's full of gleeful speculation on whether our noise was affecting the decline. While it was nice, it was probably as much to do with general declines in all markets coupled with perhaps a negative view by investors of top management that had nothing to do with us.

I think we can finally say we had a real affect on them. And, despite VV's understandable modesty, it was pretty much her, with a gentle nudge from rae. Thank you both.

(Sidenote: as glad as I am that this has become the new "official" CoH forum, I miss being able to catch up with more than one thread over breakfast...)

Two comments to things way back in the thread:

1) Mercedes' Lackeys obviously but paradoxically drive Mustangs. Which have A.I.s with neural uplinks bonded to their drivers.

2) Mercury is tide-locked, so if you live on the dark side, you're always on the dark side. (If you live on the day side, you're already vapor. Or a super-being. Personally, I keep one anti-fire-damage-enchanted redoubt on the day side to use as my stronghold in case I ever find myself at war with a vampire lord.)

I often suspect that the powers that be at NCsoft expected a little hullabaloo when the servers went down as they got from Auto-Assault, Tabula Rasa and others.

I can guaran-frelling-tee you that they had no frelling idea what sort of quagmire they were getting into.  If they knew then what they know now... I suspect things might have been done just a -teensy- bit differently.

I read somewhere that $1 worth of 'bad' advertising costs a company more than $100 to undo.

Actually Mercury does in fact rotate on its axis. But it does so so very slowly that a day there is longer than the year.

Which, if you were on the surface, produces some REALLY odd effects over time. Such as - at some points on the planet, the sun would appear to rise into the sky, slowly stop, then set again back on the SAME horizon it rose from!

Uranus has its axis of rotation parallel - or nearly so - to the plane of revolution of our known planets. It is not tide-locked, so it has a Uranus-year-long day/night cycle based on its revolution around the sun.

Mercury is tide-locked to the sun the way that Luna is tide-locked to the Earth. It rotates completely in the same amount of time it revolves completely, thus keeping one face permanently pointed at the sun, and one face permanently pointed away.

Huh, really? I thought it rotated at the same speed it revolved. That means it's not actually tide-locked, which is...odd...considering how close it is to that gravitational body.

Huh, really? I thought it rotated at the same speed it revolved. That means it's not actually tide-locked, which is...odd...considering how close it is to that gravitational body.

I remembered that Mercury is not tide-locked specifically because Larry Niven mentioned in his compilation N-Space that his first sale of a story to (I believe) John Campbell was of a story called "The Coldest Place" which had as it's central assumption that Mercury was tide-locked and that the side facing away from the sun could have temperatures in the minus 300 to minus 400 range as was believed by all at the time.

His story was about to be published when the news came out that astronomers discovered the fact of Mercury's rotation. Chagrined, he called up Campbell and asked him if he wanted to pull the story. Campbell went ahead and published it, with a short disclaimer, telling Niven that he couldn't be held at fault for scientific inaccuracy because when he wrote the story, it fit the facts as then known.

And thus we see one of the earliest examples of "if the story works, hang the physics". :D

Edit: I'd have to look it up to be sure, but I seem to recall that one reason why Mercury doesn't stay tidal locked is because it gets jostled around as it passes through the sun's intense bands of magnetic force that close. I could be remembering it wrong though. It might have been due to something else, like being blasted occasionally by flares.

YAY!  AMAZING!

Mercedes really outdid herself here.  I just hope that there is something left of the poor woman come re-launch day.   ;D  We're all going to be playing, and poor Mercedes is going to be lying in bed from exhaustion!

This is all most excellent, and most welcome news.

However, lets not jinx ourselves by seeing just this one crumbling of the corporate facade as a huge victory; we go wild with joy when the ink is dry on that document transferring the IP, and not before.

Now is the time to keep up that thousand-yard stare over the rim of our shields. "We got plenty more where that came from; now give us what we want. And do it before you have nothing LEFT to give, for we can make that happen too. Give us back the keys to our Cities, and you escape bloody, bowed.... but still alive to fight another day."

Why do I get the feeling that this article isn't what VV would consider her 'nuclear option?'

I can't verify that I've got the right YouTube video for it, because they disable access to streaming-media sites here at work after the work day starts, but it seems to me that this falls more along the lines of a JP233 runway-denial munition strike -- the Tornado flies over the runway with a cascade of bomblets dropping out of the dispenser, followed shortly by the runway being obscured by a broad lane of explosions.

Reading the Korea Times article, I am reminded of the famous misquote (there's no documented record he ever said it) of Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku:

Quote
I fear that all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.

(The closest documented quote is a reply from Yamamoto to Taketoro Ogata, "A military man can scarcely pride himself on having 'smitten a sleeping enemy'; it is more a matter of shame, simply, for the one smitten. I would rather you made your appraisal after seeing what the enemy does, since it is certain that, angered and outraged, he will soon launch a determined counterattack.")

I don't want to dance around crying victory yet, but that article has given my mood -- and my hopes for the future of CoH -- more of an uplift than anything I've done or read since 0005 Saturday morning.

So...  if NC Soft's stock drops far enough, can we buy it up and then hold a majority vote in it's shareholder meetings?

To my defense in advance: I mostly played blue side toons, even if this will sound like a red-siders' idea:

It's maybe not necessary to buy it up, but we should keep the media going to keep ncsoft's rating down.
Now the mean part of the plan: Does anyone know how to get into a position of selling market analyses via reuters???

If so, we could up one about ncsoft that reads "selling", base it on the analyst quoted in this article and ncsofts actual media perception, the development of their new "key" game GW2 and how it is behind in expected sales, and how the company closes profitable branches off (CoH), pointing out more wrong decisisons sonce 2010 (important, not earlier) when all key positions have been assigned to new people (CEO, executives etc - can be seen on the reuters page) - claiming they could be running towards "willful and malicious bankruptcy" to fill their own pockets in the process.

And on top, we can get 10$ per download, filling the funds to buy stocks if needed to take them over this way :D

Jokes aside, I think doing everything possible to keep their stock prize low is a key element in getting them to sell the IP. They may even have to at one point to stay operational. As of today, it's working very well - they had a day's low 141,000 KRW and are ATM back at 147,000 KRW - 5th of Decembre will be a new 52week low for them!

http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=036570.KS

I think that article on their home turf just blew them away. Just don't cease fire yet!

listening again to Van Canto - Last Night of the Kings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt4CQc1MSso) (thanks again whoever posted it 3 months ago, making me discover the song)

Quote
The castle is lit with candles and torches
The carriages of the nobles arrive in front
The smell of splendour and decadence
And nobody can foresee
The masters and the mistresses are walking into the hall
They are smiling and laughing and showing that they are tall
They don't recognize that we're waiting there
And just nobody can foresee
This is the last night of the kings

We are the folk
And we have the right
To stand up and to fight
For an independent life

We are the force
We are the might
And we will stand up
For an independent life

The ball has begun and we're closing our trap
Inwardly we're gathering ourselves
While the dance comes to higher pace
Still nobody can foresee
Joining the circle, in black robes unknown
Unsheathing our swords and get ready to dance
Our hearts are filled with the will to survive
In this last night of their life

It's a murderous, murderous ball night

We are heroes
Heroes of the night
We are ready to live forevermore
Our gods lead us through this fight
On and on
We are one and on our way

So, that idea is not entirely a surprise, nor being based entirely on this statement.
As other have pointed out though, this most recent statement is different than the last statement we received about how they had "exhausted all options".
Regardless of how we interpret it... how others interpret it and how NCSoft's people follow it up are what matters.
Us pointing to it and bringing it up everywhere and continuing to suggest that they sell it is a good idea, no matter what. ;)

I could easily interpret, "...nothing had been decided about selling the game afterwards..." as speaking of the past, when they made the decision to take the "strategy" of shutting CoH down and before they "exhausted" all other options.

I honestly don't think that this is the true meaning... but the "had" (past tense) in their statement does leave that as a possibility.

Regardless, even if it is a slip-up in their game of corporate-speak... it is a slip-up. And we'll play that game if we have to.

That's a good point as well. They lied to us originally, and now, after all we've caused... they're finally second guessing it.
It's either that or they're trying to save face.  Either way, this is the biggest blink we've seen.  And we know that because, like you said, they have directly contradicted themselves.  Still good news, even if it's not the best news possible.

I'll take a blink over a steely, unblinking gaze, any day.

That is the kind of media exposure I've been talking about.

That is how an article can get the point across without coming off as pure "hate ncsoft" campaign.

Just a little bit of an update. I had an email from 'Joe' who wrote the article in the Korean Times - he said as well as online, the article appeared in the print version of their newspaper.

I'm currently trying to chat up the other Korean English-language newspaper journalists, linking them to the article in the Korean Times. So far, no joy, but I'm nothing if not annoyingly tenacious at times ;)

Unfortunately, if everything goes well for us, the most optimistic figure I would estimate for us getting CoH back would be at least a year from now.

I can wait a year! (or more) I love this game that much!

Man, I don't suppose there's any way we could get some copies of that edition of the paper?  I wonder how much it would cost to get Joe or someone to box up five or ten copies and ship 'em over?

And thanks a TON for following through on this.  I cannot emphasize how important this was.  NCsoft has had a very bad week this week with a HUGE 1-2-3 punch:

1) Front page article on the home page in the business section of a local site right there in NCsoft's back yard,
2) News of layoffs in Seattle hits the press, and
3) NCsoft stock price, already down around 52-week lows, falls off a cliff around 10% in three days.

I'll ask him very nicely if he has it in pdf format, I know that's how my paper archives stuff :)

Tony, is there any chance that some of the original Titan backers who made an offer to buy CoH would try again now that NCSoft has apparently had a change of heart?  Or would Brian Clayton and his backers try again?  Timing is everything in a sale as they say.

To quote the Illuminati in TSW: "In this world it is either DO or GET DONE and we are not DONE!"

After burying my head in the sand the last couple of days - actually 'hearing' the servers die one by one on the live stream and then staring at an empty screen made me crawl into a shell afterwards - I came back here for some hope and to get involved again. And you guys come through yet again!

This is amazing news - for the good guys (read: Community) at least! *g*

Seems like the bastards did not kill our home as sucessfully as they thought ...

i think the coh community was better on the forums than any other community, it only deteriorated in the months before the actual closure date since there was essentially no moderation, and everyone was very angry with ncsoft so high tempers with little moderation = total meltdown

Not to mention that Obvious Unicorns were Obvious and escaped from under their bridges.

Before the shutdown notice, the moderation of the boards kept unicorning to a minimum. (I know you already said that. But, I thought it needed repeating.)

And that is so weird to type...
