Title: Logged in Nov 30th?
Post by: Visual Fallacy on November 08, 2012, 09:58:26 PM
So on November 30th at the time they are shutting us down we'll all be logged in standing on Atlas steps with torches right?  They are going to have to literally kick us off with every Atlas park on every server full? Because I for one 'Do not go gentle into that good night' and will 'rage, rage against the dying of the light'

I intend to be in Dark Astoria. Simply because a few days back, I lost connection while levelling Silver Spartan there... and the resulting image was very, very disturbingly relevant. (hero frozen in an unnatural angle to the ground, junk and dust floating around in thin air, message about losing connection to map server in the middle of the screen)

It is surprisingly easy for players to be forcibly logged off. Server maintenance for example...

I believe that it's more of the thought of kicking us off, rather than the difficulty of the task.

I plan to have most of my alts done with anything I want to do by the 27th.

I have the 29, 30, and 1st off; when I get home from work on the 28th I'm logging in with Professor Eviella, still my favorite character.  And I'm not logging back off.  The 1st is scheduled free for the emotional collapse.

yes exactly, I know it will just say disconnected and no fireworks or apologies or grand gestures. I just think it would be one final in-game act of standing up for what we believe in right up until the servers go dark.

I'll be standing in Beta server on the steps of City Hall, or in front of the Arachnos tower in Grandville, torch held high.  They want me off the game, they'll need to kick me off.

...I'm not certain I'll be able to log in for the final day. I've been forced to work most Thursdays, and given the season, I might have to work that Friday, too. Here's hoping I can swing it and log in to stand vigil in the face of the final days. My place will be where I belong the most...on the steps of City Hall, in Atlas Park 33, Torch burning. Look for Hawthorne Grimm, folks. I'll try to be there.

IF it happens - and I continue to hope :) - then I'll have the first character on my main account standing in Mercy Island at the old villain starting area; back where it all began for me. My second account will be in AP 33, torch high.

I echo the sentiment; you can kick me off, I'll not go willingly.

I will be fighting to the end, compatriots, and hopefully the very last thing I see will be Brawling Humiliator punching some baddie in the face... or more better, he's stuck mid swing, the baddie cowering trying to avoid yet another in the dozens of pummel shots to the noggin...

Yeah.  That'd be just about right.

I'm takin' off the 30th.  The fridge and pantry will be stocked.  I will get up, log in, and while I my switch about, I will be marathoning until the very end.  Everything else can probably wait until Dec 1.

And then I'll be here, talkin' about things, I'm sure, if not in the IRC or something.  I'm sure there'll be an afterwards thing or such.

The Real World Hero effort invites anyone that may not already have plans to come join us for a concluding rally in AP33 Virtue, Nov. 30th from 6:00pm PST until the servers shut down. I know Virtue isn't home to everyone and, logistically, everyone can't be in the same place, but it would be wonderful to see as many COH family members as possible. There is a small event entry in the Real World Hero thread for now (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6162.0.html) and we are working on ideas to make it a memorable time for all.

The event in Virtue sounds good, but I feel I need to be where I started, on Pinn, on Heat Guard, in Altas.  Maybe not exactly where he started, but can't go back to outbreak and I'd imagine quite a few of friends made over the last 3 years will be in Atlas, so I think it's fitting that I face the end with them there.

this is making me so sad just thinking about it...

I have no idea which toon I will be on.. maybe Neutron Pixie... maybe Twylite.. maybe Black Ice.. probably in Talos.. with the handful of SG members that are left....

this is heartbreaking, ya'll.. I've been playing since pre-beta.. I taught my 70 year old parents to play games through this game... I played with my nieces and nephews.. even kept a second account for them... I've made more friends here than any other game... I'm going to so miss it.

After relating the Starburst story to my Friday night group, we have decided to rally as many of the full crew as possible to run task forces. With the US Thanksgiving holiday and other family obligations, this month, that will likely be the next time most of us can get together, anyway, so it seemed fitting.  We've pretty much decided that we want to be in-mission, mid-battle when the servers go dark. "In mid-swing," as one of the guys put it.

One thing I would like to say:

Cheer up!

Even though this is the last time we may be able to participate in the world we have experienced for 8+ years, we have to take the knowledge in that this game might have not existed from the start.

At least we had the game to play, and I am confident that the "World's first Superhero MMORPG" won't be making it's last appearance come December.

At least our community had something to come together with, at least we HAD this game in the first place. Keep your heads high, and hope or pray for the best. We are still a community, nonetheless.

I had just started a new character, Heavy Core, in Virtue when the closure announcement was made. Aside from logging in with all characters for the purpose of saving their data in Sentinel and spending a little time with my first 50, I can't bring myself to play any of my old toons anymore. They are already gone to me - even my namesake. It would just be too hard to play them again and truly realize how much I'm going to miss them. Instead, I will continue to play Heavy Core (who I have enjoyed playing as much as any other character) until the lights go out in AP33 - shoulder to shoulder with the greatest community that has ever existed in the MMO world.

Hi Heroette!  I'll be right there with you, on Justice, crying my eyes out RL while I watch my toon dance in Pocket D until the shutdown/mapserver disconnect notice.  Until then, I hope to party, trade stories and camaraderie, and even team up and do missions until Game Over.  (I might have to server hop some 11/30 depending on which old friends show up for the final day of game play.)

Hi Duane!!  Nice seeing old friends here.  My understanding is Game Down is scheduled for Midnight Pacific time 11/30, which is 3 EST 12/1.  And man, will I be torn if the SGs on Justice all logs in as well as the SGs on Victory!!  Happily for me most of the time the two SGs were active during different times and only rarely did I have to pick.

Virtue is my home server, so I will (try) to be there. If it is congested as I think it will be I may not be able to get in. Jordan Lee was my first 50 and I have rerolled her as various characters, mostly /regen scrappers, on different servers. But my favorite is Sara's Screams. Sara is my badge toon and my main. Whenever something new comes out, especially if it contains badges, she was the first of my characters to experience it. And she'll be the one standing when the servers fall. Though no where nears City Hall because I expect the frame rate there to be terrifying, but maybe off in a corner of Atlas Park. Bawling my effin eyes out.

I will pick places for as many of my toons as I can figure out where they would be. I haven't decided for all of them.

My original 50 and first COH character, Lora Doubet, oddly enough, is in the ORIGINAL Galaxy City. Not the echo. She's been "retired" for at least 3 years now, and I've only brought her out on the anniversary events to get her the yearly badges.

I'm considering leaving her there. I always did prefer Galaxy City to start in back when you could choose. And maybe it's fitting.

Lily the Diamond - my main redsider 50 I should have over to Rogue status by then so she'll be able to get to the Shadow Shard. I think logging her out in the Storm Palace would be a good place.

I'm not sure where Kara Skye should be logged out. Perhaps Peregrine Island right at one of the Portals or hovering high above Atlas Park.

Cyberman 8 has become truly my signature character. And I'll be there shoulder to shoulder on the steps with everyone else on Virtue.

I will be online, will video the shut down on my mobile phone and posting it to CNN's iReport with the statement "NCSoft just flicked the switch on a community the size of (insert town name here) - is that fair?"

By the way, does anybody actually know how many people played the game and how many characters were created - would like to get the town name right for the population number.

This is going to be hard without you specifying *exactly* want you want.

Number of active subscribers?
Number of active accounts?
Number of characters created from the start of the game?

I do know that there was an image around that Paragon Studios did for one of the player summits, that relayed some of this information. It might have been for the 7 year anniversary i *think*.

I'm trying to get a figure of how many characters (not accounts) were created IN TOTAL since launch, or failing that a rough figure of how many characters were in the data banks (subscribed/f2p etc) when "the announcement" was made. From that a fast wiki search for town populations (cencus figures or the like) - then, use a Town name with a similar population to bring the impact home - hell, if real people were being terminated in ONE town the size of the character community in COH, even the UN would be sitting up and taking notice - and YES I know there is no real comparison.
I know it isnt like for like in real terms, as we are only talking computer generated characters, but a video with the title "with one bad decision and the flick of a switch, NCSoft have "killed off" more characters in City of Heroes than the population of Birmingham - is this fair?" for example, would certainly bring the point home and give an idea of perspective to people who seem to think we are a small group of "nerdies" with nothing better to do than sit in from of a PC, and should be ignored.

As a word of warning, it is probably best to try to determine the number of real, breathing people behind the characters, not the number of characters. This is best approximated by counting numbers of active accounts. People with multiple accounts will hopefully even out with people who share accounts.

Measuring the number of characters greatly inflates the population for a more impressive number (considering that we've people on this very forum with 100+ characters!), but will come across as deceptive hype in the media when the only actual people with real feelings and real efforts put in are the living, breathing ones who sit at the computer and use the characters as avatars for interacting with this virtual world.

Hmm - this is a poser - yes real people own the accounts, but, if they have 100 toons that they played, every single one was a creation that took time and effort, maybe the compramise would be to quote both accounts AND characters. I for example play regularly with a female colleague who has 82 toons, and EVERY single one was taken to level 50 before a new one was rolled, and, conversely, many people also create toons solely for maybe a costume comp etc.

I want to have my 50 dark/dark/power defender be smack-dab in the middle of an 8-player group, fighting enemies so purple they're redefining the color, with the sounds of powers going off in all directions and grinning madly while I wait for my powers to recover and I'm aiming Tenebrous Tentacles at the mob, trying to get as much of them as I can in the cone.

That's what being a hero is all about.

I had a pretty serious system meltdown on my gaming laptop, so I'm going to have to time it right. Because it won't run on AC power (but, bizarrely, WILL charge the battery when it's powered off), I'm going to have to be running on battery. Running a game depletes the battery pretty fast, so while I'll have a couple of 'em fully charged for the end, I'll still have to get the timing just right.  Unless I replace the machine by then (and mount the broken system's hard drive, where the game is installed, in the new one)...may or may not be able to afford it by then.

But we adapt and overcome. We're heroes, right?  :)

I haven't decided who it will be...but probably either Mirka or Luna Faraday, on Pinnacle.

Thanks for the link!

From the stats link - as at 28/4/2011 - 42 million characters.
Seems over 100k subscribers - http://www.gamespot.com/city-of-heroes/forum/how-many-people-play-this-game-44132777/ (http://www.gamespot.com/city-of-heroes/forum/how-many-people-play-this-game-44132777/) - but that was in 2008.

Whichever way, its a lot!

I guess a common rule of thumb would be to take something from the turnover report - monthly income divided by monthly subscription sum - but thats risky because the figures would also include micro-transactions etc, and the NCSoft figures are in won!

I reckon using "approximately" in any text I write should cover all sins!

I still have not decided which character I will be fading out with on November 30th.  My first toon and namesake, Sapphire Jane, is a Mercenary/Dark Mastermind on Freedom server and has yet to level to 50.  The only excuse I have for that is I found a new home on Virtue.

The second Sapphire Jane is an ice/rad controller on Virtue whom I've been working on feverishly to get her badge count to 1250.  At this writing, I'm not exactly sure where she stands.. maybe somewhere around 1160 or so.

And my most sentimental and all-time favorite toon is Lamera Long on Virtue.  My second dual blade/regen scrapper that I have played a lot and most people considered my main.  She is my main badger, and I've logged a lot of hours with her until I found my true calling as a support player.

I love all of my characters, but the 3 listed above are at the top of my list.  Once I speak with my longtime CoH friend and teammate, Colbolt Avenger, we may have Colbolt and Lamera in for the final sunset.  Colbolt and I have been playing together since Valentine's Day 2008, with both only having played for a couple of months prior to that event.  Colbolt and Lamera joined forces when they were in their lower teens and getting their arses handed to them in The Hollows, and continued on until they leveled to 50 on the same mission.  We worked hard to keep their level as close as possible so they would level to 50 at near the same time.  Ahh.. good times.

The decision really isn't going to be an easy one but I will be logged in when the sun sets and I'm disconnected from the server one last time.  :'(

Stygian Kitten, who was Stygian Cat back around I3, will be there on Virtue until the very end. I have a soft spot for Claws/DA, which I've played now three times to 50. Back when the end drain was horrid, the sounds looped, and when any other Claws/DA you met would greet you like a member of a secret brotherhood.

No torches, just hanging out with friends, doing missions, radios, task forces, whatever and beating the tar out of whatever we can find when the lights go out. I know many of my long time Global Friends will be along with me.

One idea from that group of friends is we'll run BAFs so more of us can all team together at once. The idea of pulling Nightstar's eartenna off just as the lights go out is appealing. :)

I have the 29th and 30th off to be sure I'm there for BOTH midnights, just in case they pull a fast one (thankfully, I live in California). The pizza, Monster, Foosh, and Oomph! will be there to help me spend those last precious hours, minutes, and seconds beating up villains on the only game of it's kind. My first, my only, my last MMO.

65+ alts, 12+ 50s, among them:
Stygian Kitten, Polly's Revenge, Porvata, That's Bull, Jeff Spicer, CFI-MEDIC911, Polly Shock, QTR Nevermoore, Schroedinger-Pavlov, Archon Abrasax, Alpha Antares, Traitorous Bedrock, Stygian Cat, Chitraka, Nocent Portent, Chaos' Plague, Longbow Sapper, Gryphus Contego, A. Leo Gryphus, Light Fairy, Dark Fairy Outcast, Rhus Summack, Serval Blades, Gluskabi, SHARPS Firewall, Unshakable, Schwarzschild Effect, and just too many more to remember right now...

The day I bought/installed the game on April 28th, 2004 I created my little Healix. She emerged in Atlas Park, and she will watch the lights go out there.

Posting this kind of buried in this thread on purpose, because while I do want it to be seen, I don't want it to be extremely widespread as it could cause a bit of chaos.

If you want your character to revisit some old memories before logging out (or being kicked off for some of us), here's how to get there.

NOTE: This is technically an exploit. It's mostly harmless in the grand scheme of things, though with some creativity you can get anywhere in the game with it, including lots of places you're not "supposed" to be. A few of us have been using it for a couple months to map out some of the "lost" zones, but if you're extremely paranoid, you've been warned.

You'll need to get Long Range Teleport, either with a respec or with an alternate build. If you only have one place to go, you can use a Wentworth's/Black Market Teleporter temp power instead. Base Teleporter does NOT work.

1. Activate Long Range Teleport. When the destination window pops up, do not click anything.

2. Copy and paste one of the following into your chat box and hit enter:

Paragon Dance Party
Code: [Select]
/enter_door_teleport LinkFrom_City_02_01 68
Old Faultline
Code: [Select]
/enter_door_teleport LinkFrom_City_02_02 19
Rikti Crash Site
Code: [Select]
/enter_door_teleport LinkFrom_City_05_01 60
Galaxy City *(the real one, not the Echo)
Code: [Select]
/enter_door_teleport NewPlayer 29
Outbreak
Code: [Select]
/enter_door_teleport NewPlayer 24
Breakout
Code: [Select]
/enter_door_teleport NewPlayer 70
3. Party like it's 2004!

OMG...

I've GOT to try that out!

(EDIT: Confirmed - it works with Wentworth/Black Market Tporters. First time I've gotten a demorecord/screenshots of OLD Faultline in about 5 years!)

The only part that I can see that would lead to that would be the Q4 for 2011... where there *was* indeed an increase in financial revenues from the previous 6 months.

It is interesting as to how this come across though, it could be read as that the game was actually in quite severe trouble and that there was indeed going to be a very large decline in players and money... and if it wasn't for Freedom, the Q4 revenues would have shown a completely different picture.

Very true.  Granted, there are ways to creatively track & report revenue.    For example:  pre-orders for Going Rogue.

Now, the moment I give my money to NCSoft, it's in their hands, but many/most businesses won't "realize" that revenue in the accounting until the product is delivered.  The pre-orders gave us access to powersets early, though, so some of the product was effectively delivered in advance.  This could justify early-realizing some or all of that revenue early, if they wanted..  If some or all of that revenue was reported in the quarter prior to release, it would "fill some potholes" in any decline they may have been experiencing, camouflaging it from the reports. If they'd rather have a bigger-measured "surge" they may have deferred the results to the actual product release.  Similar issues arise when it comes to reporting a yearly subscription.  Break it down on a month-by-month level as each month is completed? Realize it only after the full contract is completed (at the end of the year?)  Realize it whent you have all that cash on-hand and have begun offering the service?

It could be that how that source is measuring the boost in revenue in his reference is using the increase based on his perspective, which is different than how NCSoft is reporting that revenue.

------------------

I went back and re-examind some of the reports, to be sure they didn't explain how they reported these, and wha really stood out for me this time wasn't that CoH was such a small part of those charts, but that it was such a large part of the markets that it served:

They don't give enough data to fully do this next step, but if you generously assume that all the other titles were proportionally-represented evenly across all markets and give them a respective proportion of the US/European market, then you'd have Aion at ~13,700 won, L1 at ~12,035, and L2 at 6,185 in those regions.  Given the wide margin of error for such assumptions, (and my expectation that GW and many of the "other" titles are probably VERY regional) you can still see that CoH could have been a contender for top sales in the markets that it served in 2011.  Yet less than a year later it is shut down, so something doesn't add up.

Of course, one annoyance in trying to get any useful info from those reports is the bait-and-switch in metrics.  You provide sales based on each game, but you don't report costs based on each game.. you report by subsidiary.  This can be roughly translated to region (nc interactive+ Arenanet+ NC Europe comes a bit higher than the european+us total) but you can't really tell the health of a product here like I'd prefer.  If I had the the "costs" per game to compare to the "sales" then we could see each product's individual health.  As it is, we don't know how much of the "running in the red" at NC Interactive is from all the other products under development (GWII, Wildstar, Paragon's mystery project) generating no revenue and how much of it is due to bad margins at any one revenue-generator.

Back on Topic:

My wife and I will be rotating between a few characters that night- we have a few couples we'd like to say "goodbye" to, but we'll be ending the night with our namesakes, "Chase Arcanum" and "Cinder Flame", Liberty Server...  We're gonna take down Mot one last time, then stay on until someone pulls the plug.

Mikey, and several of the old Kings Row Taxi's will be on Infinity.  Technically, we should be in KR, but I almost think it's fitting that we should stand atop Atlas, torches out.

(Although marching on NC's offices in Korea torches out would probably be more fun.)

Well as servers go it's 'Union for life' for me.

As to what toon? Well I think they all deserve to breath the air in Paragon City one last time, but I'll be on Spanky the Loveclown when the lights go out...

You will want to be logged in the evening of the 29th.  As I understand 3AM(ET) November 30 the servers go off
It has been confirmed several times that the server shutdown is to occur at 11:59:59PM Pacific on Friday, Nov. 30th.

Well Nov. 30th, I hope you all have fun, even with the gloomy pall the situation casts over that day, and enjoy time with friends family real and in game, and try to remeber the good times.

Unfortunately I will not be there on Nov. 30th in game (havent logged in since I left the first time.)  but will always remember COX.

Evangel will be there - fighting until the very end. I don't intend to go out with a vigil or some movement. I want to remember the game as it was. I don't want to log out I want to be mapservered. I support all the efforts to show a display of numbers but to me it's more important to get closure by doing what I love - playing my character.

Evangel will be swinging his katana until the screen freezes...

Hm. You're on Infinity, and it IS a Friday night that goes, for me, until 1 am. Maybe I can hunt you down to hang out a bit. I'll be Segev, the necromancy mastermind, if I can make it. (I'm only level 17, though, and I don't know if red side/blue side issues would prevent it.)

I plan to be in Galaxy Echo (at "the park") Friday night until I get disconnected. I'll be on the very first character I ever made ("T J"), back in the summer of 2004. Personally I can't see any better way to leave the game than on him; where I started shall be where I finish.
