Title: MMOKiller/GameKiller meme images
Post by: Turjan on October 13, 2012, 10:48:46 PM
I have compiled all the MMOKiller/GameKiller meme type pictures I've done so far into one suitably named Photobucket account -

The MMOKiller on Photobucket (http://s1339.photobucket.com/albums/o714/MMOKiller/)

On the site you'll find folders called...

One point though -

If you do want to add your own captions, do remember that no matter how bad things get, we are still the good guys in this, and it makes sense to keep it that way if we can, so please don't stoop to using cheap insults, offensive language, and needlessly crass humour.

Visual mockery works best as a publicity tool when it cuts like a surgeon's scalpel rather than crashes down like a thug's fists. The idea is ridicule, not abuse! This is why I've often used actual quotes from NCSoft (and even Taek jin Kim himself) to reinforce that it's NCSoft's own actions that have brought such ridicule on themselves.

Spread the word, and enjoy! :)

Idea for that one came to me as I was playing my Neo-inspired Pistols/Martial blaster on beta... ;D

At the risk of hijacking my own thread, a thought just occurred to me...

(it's not a thought worth a new thread, and I figured if I'm going to ramble down mental byways I might as well clutter up one of my own threads rather than mess up someone else's ;) )

Right, so, here's the thing...

I was thinking about that Glassdoor article about NCSoft's ongoing inability to operate in the west.
Then I started thinking about Nexon's recent "bring it on!" bravado in their Forbes article, all about operating MMOs in the western market.
I thought about F2P models, and NCSoft, and Nexon.
Then I thought about NCSoft selling shares to Nexon.
Finally (as always) I tried to work out what part CoH plays in such thinking.

Here's what I came up with -

With the exception of GW2 and ArenaNet, NCSoft have been pulling out of the west for a long time. Nexon, on the other hand, seem to be more intent on expanding in the west.

With the stock transfer from NCSoft to Nexon in mind, how crazy does the idea sound of NCSoft wanting to pull out of the west entirely and letting their more marketing savvy partner Nexon handle joint NCSoft/Nexon foreign affairs?

But the two companies aren't one, they're just...chums. Sort of. In as much as any union between two huge corporations is.

With that line of thought, CoH starts to look like a bump in the road, one to be flattened out. Sure, CoH is an entirely western idea, western icons etc., seemingly the perfect property to hand to Nexon and let them run the show...but I repeat, the two companies ARE NOT MERGED. I'm betting there's a million logistical and legal issues that would make a handover like that far more trouble than it's worth.

But if we assume the future path is clear for both companies (NCSoft work more at home, Nexon operate more overseas, all for mutual benefit) then CoH becomes a problem, not a solution. It's a bit of yesterday that needs to be trimmed off. Yes, conceptually it may be in accord with some future plan of both companies, but it's got too many deep roots to just dig up and transplant. Easier to chop it down, then get the new gardener in to plant something in its place.

So I'm curious now...is the plan that NCSoft retreats to the east and Nexon acts for both in the west?
Guess we wait and see.

The idea has some merit, but it doesn't really add up with NCSoft's pushing of Blade and Soul onto the US market - if they were doing a withdrawl strategy would it not have been wiser to not announce B&S at all? (if they knew they were withdrawing by the time they shut down CoH they probably also knew it already when announcing B&S)
Guess we'll know if they announce one of these days that Blade and Soul's US/EU launch is cancelled.

I don't expect them to withdraw the launch of Blade and Soul, nope - there's no doubt at all that it will sell a shedload of copies to the boob-ogling faction of gamerland. Whether anyone will actually stick with the game after they've copped an eyeful though is another matter entirely. Boobs aside, the concept, world, story and so on is extremely Korean. Just as CoH bombed in Korea, I'd not be at all surprised if once the initial impact of the boobs (if you'll pardon the expression) is over, the players will just trickle away.

And if that happens, B&S-US will likely become just another MMO victim for NCSoft West - maybe they'll bury it alongside Lineage-US (RIP June 2011).

As long as Guild Wars 1 and 2 are alive though, NCSoft can't really pull out of the west entirely - but the combined playerbase (and therefore revenue) of those titles might be enough to offset the logistics of allowing Nexon to sneak in by the side door and take the reins.

As for poor Wildstar...
*shrugs*
Well, NCSoft doesn't tend to invest in a title that's never released...but it has been in development for a fair old while now, and with NCSoft's record to date of closing 5 out of 6 of their US based MMOs, I certainly wouldn't be putting a bet on Wildstar surviving long. If indeed it is launched - don't forget NCSoft broke with tradition when it canned a currently profitable title (our own CoH of course) so it's anybody's guess really.

But it does remind me that I need to upload another pic to the MMOKiller folder...

Can someone try to do a gif of my video (http://youtu.be/gAJlQ6o8p9g) ? maybe just the first part of it (no need for the CoH Tweet account (I meant the tag anyway) and the petition is far overdue now)
Title: Re: MMOKiller/GameKiller meme images

Converting your video to a gif would be an endeavour of craziness I think, essentially like taking a fighter jet that was modded from a biplane...and then trying to mod it back into a biplane again :o

Not to mention the size of the output gif, unless it was painstakingly edited and resampled to reduce the frame rate to the bare minimum. All seems a bit superfluous when you consider the original Zero Wing gif was only 18 frames and weighed in at 95kb

However...remaking a gif from scratch using that original Zero Wing gif and adding your text to it...now that might be a more viable project. I'll have a look, see if it can be done :)

I tracked down the original lightweight, no-animations-from-ingame Zero Wing gif, resized it up by 100%, and recaptioned it. The result, while definitely oldschool, is at least an order of magnitude less impressive than your video, lol

Anyway, here it is :-

That a nice start.

If you know a good frame-by-frame animation editor, just take my video, make it a huge gif(that why you need a good software), and cherry-pick the 30 or so frames to do that, you missed some frames.

An idea... maybe. (https://images.weserv.nl/?url=www.fragglerockforever.com%2FCoX%2FNCrabbit.jpg)

What, behind NCsoft? It IS NCsoft.

This started as a little spontaneous thing that happened on the AP33 steps a few days ago, right after Ascendant went through the famous phone call speech. We all started doing improv NC monologues, and I ended up with something like...

Follow. But. Follow only if ye be heroes of valour, for the corridors of NCsoft HQ are inhabited by businessmen so cruel, so cold, that no warrior yet has negotiated with them and lived! Bones of 5 slain MMO's lie strewn about their lair. So, brave heroes, if you do doubt your courage or your patience, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty, big, communication failures!"

Dunno. Maybe replace the logo with the Kaiju monster's head and the bandana. Or a closeup of the bunny with the bandana on, and game boxes laying around it, & a bloody CoH box hanging from its mouth. *shrug*

Alas, the ancient Zero Wing gif I found only had those 18 frames, and at the moment I don't have anything that can handle gifs other than PSP's Animation Shop, and it can't handle video imports :-\

I think this has a high chance to spread among any of the images.

First off, I think we might still be a little early for the MMO killer stage of the campaign; that said, I guess it doesn't hurt to check out the ammo, just in case.

Anyway, a bit of analysis, if you don't mind -

The primary tool of parody is context. Ideally, you should be very selective how much you change the source material, almost to the point of minimalism. Add to it instead, reframing what it symbolizes.

First, lose the hat. I'm not sure if it's a reference to another meme, but it only detracts from the whole iconic picture of the Architect with no benefit that I can see. Memes, as a rule, are focused on making a single point - in this case, "NCsoft kills MMOs".

Second, use a different caption. The original line goes "But, rest assured, this will be the sixth time we have destroyed it, and we have become exceedingly efficient at it." Now, it's hard to cram all that into a caption, so it needs to be abridged - something along the lines of "This will be the fifth time we have killed an MMO, and we have become exceedingly efficient at it." "Destroy" is a very loose term in terms of games - it can range from design changes that drive away the players to an all-out shuttering. "Killed", on the other hand, tends to carry an air of finality around it.

This, finally, leaves one vital point to be addressed, which is what exactly is he talking about. That might best be conveyed via the screens - line up the logos of the MMOs so far {use the extra screen for Paragon Studios logo}. The arrangement also matters - if arrange them in ascending order, with CoH at the top, it will probably portray it as the most important one - place it at the bottom, and it will probably symbolize the latest in a long line.

Title: Re: MMOKiller/GameKiller meme images

What's it supposed to be, though?
The 'hat' is actually a Guild Wars bandana - ironic, no? ;)

I chose red for two reasons - first, it's bright and stands out nicely in most scenes, drawing the viewer's eye to it and the NCSoft logo it bears, and second, red is the Korean symbolic colour of death.

When I first started out with these ideas, I used an icon that would be recognisable in Korean culture - Yongary (Korea's version of Godzilla). I needed something bright and visual to identify him as the agent of NCSoft, and the GW bandana seemed ideal. Later, when I was looking around for other situational vehicles to convey the MMOKiller message, the NCSoft red bandana I'd already used was the obvious carry over choice to tie all the the images into a single theme. Take the bandana, stick it on the Matrix Architect (or the Mars Attacks leader, or the Rabbit of Caerbannog as I've also done so far) then add a quote from the source material manipulated to reference NCSoft, and the theme is continued.

The key with any such gag concept is repetition - in this case, keeping a repetitive motif that's shorthand for the MMOKiller running through all the material. In other words, the bandana :)

The bandana can be used to subvert an existing meme with a visual marker...

...or it can be the concept anchor in an image that has the same pose as an existing meme ;)

These two ideas actually came to me as I was replying to your question Quinch - thanks for the inspiration! :)

I have no artistic skills, but would this idea be any good?

A bloated vulture sitting atop a corpse (optionally wearing the NCSoft Bandana).  The corpse can, at your option, be dressed up as Statesman.  Maybe have it squawking at other birds to keep them away from the body.

No text necessary.

Nice job :)

I reckon I should add the NCSoft bandanas to the MMOKiller Photobucket site. If memory serves, .png files should work as layers, so they can be pasted onto whatever folk want to paste them on. I'll make a Resources folder to shove them in, and also put the CoH logo and NCSoft logo there.

It occurs to me that having a highly destructive gang of vandals in the Plan Z universe that wear a red bandanna with a smudged blue logo that is not quite legible but vaguely recognizable might be appropriate.

After NCsoft's somewhat foolish Facebook reply wherein they state that City of Heroes "...is like a family member of this company", I simply had to do this pic and add it to the NCsoft the MMOKiller (http://s1339.photobucket.com/albums/o714/MMOKiller/NCSoft%20the%20MMOKiller/) folder :-

I think it should still say MMO Killer though, not Family Killer. Just for the sake of consistency.

Of course, we (as 'kinda' a group collective) have been latching on to States, even though the devs had him die storyline-wise.  They had been tossing around bringing Sis P. back, but not him.

Ah yes, sorry - I did change the name of the Variations folder - it used to be 'Variations GameKiller' but now it's simply 'GameKiller', so yep, that will break links to the old name.

I did also rename 'NCSoft the MMOKiller' to "NCsoft the MMOKiller' (have to be pedantically accurate in the business of taking satirical potshots after all) but I don't think changing the case of a single letter will bust any links. I hope. ;)

Just wanna say, been loving the images so far. I've been alternating them when playing TF2 and it brightens my day when players stop and read it.
I will ask though, since this is something that was brough to my attention, the NCSoft logo needs to stand out in the picture. I've gotten a few comments asking about what was written on the red hat, used in the images as it's a bit blended into the area. And I should mention I was kinda surprised with the lack of negative comments and actual positive comments I have received.

The font snob in me twitches every time I see Comic Sans used on the images.  I know, I know, I'm sorry, but its one of those things, it distracts me.
There are free comic book type fonts available like:  Anime Ace - http://www.dafont.com/anim-ace.font. Download install and enjoy.

I used that font to adjust one of the meme images that was posted in the Facebook group :

The stockwatch one, I'm not too happy with, the text is all over the place. Anyone have an idea how to clean that up?

Sure here you go. I added some bolding for important points. Let me know if you want me to remove it.

Let's remember good Netiquette about hotlinking images. Please save the images to your computer and upload them where you want to display them. (Twitter, Facebook, etc)

I'm a bit of a noob with Forums, so could someone tell me how to post a picture? XD
First, find an image host that allows hotlinking.  I use Imgur (http://imgur.com/) or Photobucket (http://beta.photobucket.com/), personally.

Upload your image using the host (for photobucket, you'll need to register an account, which saves all your images to an album that you can make private).

Once you've uploaded the image, you'll be taken either to an image page or your album page, where you can find a "link for forums" option.  Clicking the URL copies  the image link (with appropriate forum tags) into your clipboard.

Paste that into your post, and you're good to go.

If you already have the URL of an uploaded image, just surround it with IMG tags, like this:

Code: [Select]
[img]http://image.url.com/image.jpg[/img]
But as Altoholic Monkey pointed out, make sure you have hotlinking permission before you link an image.  Hotlinking an image without permission is bandwidth theft, which is poor internet etiquette and will frequently get images removed or redirected to a placeholder.

Not as good as the other pics here but hopefully I'll come up with something better.

Also, what do you mean intense? Or do you mean... hold on, to clarify - Fry would be us. Thus, the mouse ears and the CoH insignia/cape/whateverisidentifiable would convey the message "we like Disney, we like CoH, we have money to spend".

In theory, anyway.

No, it is a very, VERY common meme for something they really, really, really want.

Besides, have you ever seen Futurama? Fry doesn't have a mean bone in his body.

I've seen it. And I like it. It just doesn't seem like something that will be attractive to Disney. Not at all familiar with the meme, though.

Post by: Quinch on November 29, 2012, 03:45:28 AM
That's part of the joke, although it's not mean but impatient. Like the "I keep throwing money at the screen, but nothing is happening" meme, it's used to say "I want this, I want it now and I'm not just willing, but eager to spend money to get it." So, say, a fan with Mickey Mouse ears {maybe with the price tag still hanging to clarify it's not Disney itself} with a recolored shirt and jacket in Statesman colors with a caption "Shut up and take my influence" would show eagerness to support the idea of Disney/CoH combination?

Yeah, I haven't bought anything Disney-related that I can think of in quite some time, but if they re-opened CoH, I'd be going out of my way to find ways to throw them money.

Well if the cat is below the square/cube threshold he'll be okay.

Oh I should explain. Without getting all technical - The square/cube threshold is where an animal has enough mass/size to actually hurt themselves via falling damage. Below a certain point, air resistance is a greater factor than gravity. Squirrels and small rodents like mice and rats almost cannot be killed by falls. If you tossed a squirrel out of a plane, he'd instintively spread out his legs (like a flying squirrel of course) and even if he's NOT a flying squirrel, the air resistance will keep the "terminal velocity" from being - well - terminal. There's just not enough mass there. And when he lands, there's not enough inertia to cause internal organ damage or even enough to break bones.

Cats - depending on the breed are right on the edge of that threshold. Smaller cats have been known to survive falls off of 12 story balconies.

But larger cats - like say, a Maine Coone? They would definitely go SPLAT.

That's why I feel no guilt being amused by things like this -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgDa_cpgHWs

- because the squirrel is suffering nothing but the loss of dignity. :)

My understanding is that cats tend to be fine providing they fall from high enough to get into the right position, there is a range of heights that are dangerous with both a lower and upper bound.

One image that goes thru my mind is the scene in the second Matrix movie where Trinity tells the agent to "Dodge this!" as she shoots him.  It's a departure from my peace-nik, "live and let live" side (which is where I try to live most my life) to the angrier, even somewhat vengeful side when I tell you I've imagined a graphic repeatedly where the Agent is NCSoft and Trinity is saying "Realign this!"

Please note I'm not condoning RL violence - or if I am, that's not my intention at all.  I'm simply giving vent to some angry emotions.  Otherwise, I try to live my life in accordance with values I hold such as A.J. Muste's famous "There is no way to peace. Peace is the way."

It isn't so much shame I think as sense of perhaps undue caution.  I was living and working in Denver and still remember Columbine and when the phrases "going postal" and "road rage" came into use.   I agree with you about the painting of the Furies; I think it's very powerful.

Sorry if this has been brought up before, long thread...

We should mod this classic comic cover from X Men #141:

I'm no good with photoshop, but we could edit in all the games NCsoft killed in the background, maybe change the text.

My friend @kavik (i dunno what his Titan name is yet) will be joining us soon (Thanks TonyV and the Mods who provided info re: why he wasn't able to log in here).  In email today, Kavik tells me he's a bit trepidatious about joining the forums, since like most working, active people he hasn't had the luxury of time I and others have to fully work thru his feelings of anger and sorrow (not that I am entirely done with grieving, myself).  Meanwhile, while I posted this in another thread, here's how I am feeling about the Titan community today:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T62FDHh56A ("lovely to see you", Moody Blues).  Logging out now to go have lunch with a pal.  Best wishes for a SUPER day!!   :)

Yeah... they were friendly, rather wistful protests at first, standing around with torches on the steps of Paragon City Hall. I remember when the mood turned angry, and I warned folks that there'd be no turning back once we crossed that line. But we crossed it long ago, for better or worse. It's a community of fighters, and a few banal, halfhearted words from some corporate spin-doctor aren't going to placate us.

It looks like NCSoft's windmill is going up. Well, you sow what you reap. At least they won't be around to stop us when we pick up their Abandonware.

Glad you finally approve of one of my images.

Why, angry mobs with torches, of course.
I know you're trying really hard to skirt the green-skinned fairy-tale creature line, but be honest with yourself: Titan forums is not a place for angry mobs with torches. At most there's a few people here who are kind of on the batshit side of things. Most of us, though, are pretty moderate and we don't want to burn NCsoft at the stake.

I know. Please note that I am not saying that these forums are like that, only that I keep witnessing certain behaviors here. Naturally it is to be expected as some people take it harder than others. What surprises me, however, is the reaction of the community or lack of thereof. That makes me somewhat bitter and prone to making snarky comments. I suppose I need to up my dose of zen.
Title: Re: MMOKiller/GameKiller meme images

Taking a moment for self-reflection...

I create these memes as tools to damage NCSoft. I started making them on shutdown-day. It's my contribution to our cause. They're calculated to have an effect, without saying anything unbecoming.

Now I have no illusions that my efforts, or the efforts of the entire CoH community, are behind NCSoft's apparent misfortunes. But we sure aren't helping. If I was an American stockbroker, and my Google of NCSoft led me to this site, I'd never even consider this company.

If current NCSoft stock trends continue, I expect a lot of people will be out of work. I regret this.

Nonetheless, and I think I can speak for a lot of the people here, I'm tired of corporate arrogance. Wanna make a profit? Fine. Wanna throw your customers away like used tissue? Don't like it. Wanna rip 'em off one last time before you pull the plug? Line crossed! (Honestly, I wouldn't be here if they hadn't put Nature Mastery up three days before the announcement. Whether or not that was a simple screw up, that kind of cheating makes me mad. Then they had the nerve to post that patronizing "...game and community will remain forever in our memories and hearts..." treacle on their shutdown screen. Grr! )

Our actions here at Save CoH constitute a kind of civil disobedience. We are making our displeasure known, and that's our right. We have broken no laws, and we certainly aren't inciting violence. If I may speak for us, we are a virtual mob carrying virtual torches against a fictitious business entity.

V was right: ideas are bulletproof. The only way to defeat an idea is with another idea. Ours is, "customers deserve to be treated fairly."

The second NCSoft transfers the CoH IP to a better caretaker, I will delete these images and ask that this entire thread be erased, and I won't waste another second thinking about them. And if I was a person in authority at NCSoft, I'd drop CoH like a radioactive, carcinogenic rock. Because we here at Save CoH may be having more of an effect than they realize.

...or even we realize.

It's called negative publicity.  I warned NCsoft repeatedly that it was what they were facing by making the decision they did, and then not releasing the IP to be acquired by the former employees of Paragon Studios.  I'm not sure exactly what "negative publicity" means to you, but this is pretty much right in line with what I expected.

And be honest, as far a s negative publicity goes, this is hardly carrying torches.  Maybe it's because I've lived in places where there were coal miner strikes that got very ugly--as in, people slashing tires, vandalizing property, using physical intimidation and threats, even to the point where people were injured and killed, but to my knowledge, no one here has even done anything illegal, and no one is trying to incite a literal riot.  So accusations that people are going overboard and complaints that "Goshdarnit, some of those pictures are just plain mean!" are kind of lost on me.

...actually, lemme amend that, I wouldn't leave. This community is idealistic enough that if anyone ever actually crossed a line like that, they'd be banned and gone faster than the Speed of Bad News.

"...complaints that 'Goshdarnit, some of those pictures are just plain mean!' are kind of lost on me."

It's utterly impractical to do, but that line sparked the mental image of what would be a hilarious prank to pull. Find the cars belonging to Chairman Kim and any other NCSoft staffer who can be associated by name with either the closure of CoH or the "Here's a non-answer to your questions; now shut up and behave" pronouncements. Jack up the back end of each car and mount a wide strap around the tread face; the strap is molded so that its surface is a stamp saying "I'm an MMOkiller!". Rig a tank of water-soluble ink (you want the cities to be able to get it off the roads easily) that feeds to a widget spreading the ink across the face of the strap. Now, whenever they drive (or are driven) somewhere, they would leave a double trail of "I'm an MMOkiller!" painted on the road behind them until the tank ran dry.

Right, because there are no other threads about anything else anywhere to be found here at all?

Folks, I'm going to say this again.  There are people here who want to see NCsoft boiled in oil.  I personally don't like the company myself (although to be fair, shout-out to the GM team, they're awesome; I'm referring to the corporate offices in Korea).  There are anti-NCsoft threads, and that's not going to stop in the foreseeable future.  Consider yourself warned.

However, that is not the sole purpose of the Titan Network.  In fact, in spite of my own personal feelings towards NCsoft, there is a thread dedicated specifically to former CoH players who are now playing Guild Wars 2 (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6961.0.html).  And yes, people have posted anti-NCsoft posts there.  And yes, we have moderated them because it's disruptive (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6961.msg96964.html#msg96964).  So please, spare me the lectures and comparisons to Orwell, and no matter how many ragequit posts I read, you're not going to make me feel one iota of guilt or convince me to start shutting down people who are peacefully expressing their anger and disappointment with NCsoft without disrupting others.  Funny thing, to me it would be more Orwellian of me to start locking threads, deleting posts, and otherwise telling people what to think or say when they're not causing any harm or disruption to discussion, yet apparently that's what some people expect me to do.

It's really simple.  If you don't agree with the anti-NCsoft crowd, then find other threads to read and post in.  It's not like they're hard to find.  This particular forum, "Save Paragon City!", is specifically dedicated to ideas and discussion around getting NCsoft to change their mind and release the game IP.  That's not going to happen with people sitting around doing nothing, and all of our positive efforts have been rebuffed, so it's not unreasonable to expect many of the posts here to focus on how to negatively affect NCsoft to the point where they will let the IP go to stop the negative publicity.  If you have better ideas, by all means, please post them!  (Just be forewarned that "Just let it go..." is probably also not going to meet a warm reception in the "Save Paragon City!" forum.)

If you want to leave the Titan Network because of anti-NCsoft posts in this forum, then don't let the door hit you on the way out.  I'm not saying that I want you to go, but I won't lose any sleep over it because to be brutally honest, if you come to this particular forum and you're offended by anti-NCsoft posts, that's your problem, not mine.  Why aren't you contributing to pitching City of Heroes to other companies (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/board,161.0.html)?  Why aren't you participating in discussions about the comic medium in general (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/board,163.0.html)?  Why are you seeking other former CoH players to play other games with (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/board,158.0.html)?  Why aren't you contributing to a successor to City of Heroes (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/board,170.0.html)?  Why aren't you discussing the future of the Paragon Wiki now that CoH is shut down (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/board,67.0.html)?

If instead of doing any of these or many other things that are topics of discussion you deliberately choose to come into threads that are about a topic that you know you're probably not going to enjoy reading or participating in, hey, I really don't have any issue with that, either.  Spirited discussion and even civil arguments--including dissenting viewpoints--are welcome and encouraged.  If you're under the impression that I'm going to shut down conversation because someone has a disagreement, though, I can tell you that's not going to happen.  I'm sorry if that's the standard by which you just a community worth participating in, but that's not how we roll here.  If we were so anti-NCsoft, why do you think we haven't moderated any of your posts?

The kind of funny thing is, I just had another ragequit a week ago for precisely the opposite reason; someone was all hurt and upset because we moderated their posts for using an offensive derogatory term.  If I were more fragile, I'd give up, under the impression that I just can't win.  As it is, though, I'm just arrogant enough to know when I'm right about something, and a few things I know I'm right about are that not everyone here is anti-NCsoft, there are plenty of discussions that have nothing to do with NCsoft at all, and accusations of being Orwellian aren't going to get very far when we moderate as little as we do.

It is the internet Tony, many of the rage quitters will just come back under a new profile and act like a completely new person in a week.

I have been ticked off at stuff before - but you know what I have damn near punched my brother before as well and I love him dearly. If you can't understand that people see the world in a different way than you and often for good reasons - then the internet will beat you down, skin you and eat you.

crap, we lost the Frog.

He been here since the get go supporting the movement, seemed to have no fear speaking his mind, even if it was against the grain of what everyone think, and sad to see him go on such terms.

While it was only one person, not the first and probably wont be the last, we really should, as a whole, be a bit more open to differing opinions without jumping down each other throat. Yeah I know, people SAY the yare open to differing opinions but their actions sometimes speak different. Not pointing fingers and even I am trying to always remember that each person have two sets of eyes and what they eyes see and think and feel may be totally different than what my eyes seen in my 28 years.

Wel lsaid Tony, but not trying to flame or start anything, and I might have just should of just sent private PM, but since it's said, I have noticed that it's not that easy to avoid anti-NCSoft rants. Even in other threads, postings, if someone barely mentions NCSoft in a way that is not NC(insert insult or negative comment) some how anti-ncsoft comments pop up. It really dont bother me much as it's very much understood that some people have deep hatred of NCSoft and rightfully so, but on the other hand I understand how it can get tiring that a post or thread topic with any mention of NCSoft cant go three postings (may be exaggeration) with out someone inserting anti-ncsoft something. Or calling NCSoft something derogatory.

I know that hating NCSoft is not the sole purpose of Titan network, and the reason I like it here and see the great things people are doing, but from a glance, pick a topic, outside that modded GW2 thing, and somewhere there is someone again saying something negative about NCSoft. With some of those comments, which is allowed, if a person was to take out NCSoft, and insert say, Paragon Studios, they probably would be flamed, and or banned or modded. Yet, add insult and as long as NCSoft is the subject it's ok. Fair enough given their reputation but avoiding it isnt an easy endeavor. It's everywhere. A person that may not be familiar with Titan or just stopping through and seeing what is up, may take the sheer amount of hate NCsoft posts as a sign that Titan is there solely for spewing hate at and about NCsoft. What do I propose? I think a anti-NCSoft vent section would help. That way, people have a dedicated space to vent their frustration without it being all over the place and making it seems our entire efforts are directed at either trying to bring the demise to NCSoft, making ant-NCSoft artwork, and general hate towards NCSoft which can distract from the main goal. While on the other hand anyone who enters know exactly what they are getting into and make it easy for those that do not wish to join up arms against NCSoft and or do not have to feel the pressure to defend themselves when ever they mention NCSoft without an insult against those that are still hurting.  But yeah, this thread in particular, with the title was fair warning for people that dont like to see a bunch of NCSoft hate.

Sorry for the ramble, havent had my Rockstar yet. I havent said this before but what made me stick around here and stick around COX community as long as I have was the diversity of the people. You had some expert gamers, you had beginning gamers, you had the nutcases, you have the level headed people, you had some people who put their sweat blood tears into the game you had some people who just played when they could. To me, that what made the community great. IN games like WoW, besides an outside few, everyone is about the samething in the same manner and same attitude and there are millions of them. Here we barely had 150,000 and had more diversity than any game I ever came across. That is one essence I hope we can keep in this community. But like anything there are ups, downs, ugly, and oogly. Emily Dickinson, for example. Most people never even knew of her works during her lifetime but after her death and many of her poems was found, then they realized the talent. Just people a person havent worn their talent on their sleeve at this given point doesnt mean they are absolutely worthless to the cause. The greatest game in the world can be created by the greatest game gurus in the universe but it's a waste without the players and sometimes even the most casual player can point out things and see things that a guru would miss and or because it's beneath their notice but important.

Only a handful of people have been banned, and one of those was for posting nothing but nigh-on gibberish so he doesn't count, and another one was banned AFTER throwing a hissy fit, so he doesn't count either. I personally haven't done a whole lot of modding people's posts, whether pro- or anti-NCsoft, unless they get into racist comments or are being belligerent or offensive. I haven't seen any of the other mods/admins doing anything more than what I've been doing. So honestly, I have no idea where you're coming from with this.

Flamed, sure, maybe, but we don't have control over how the userbase responds to people, only how we tone down the craziest parts.

*dranked my medicine I mean Rockstar and brain working better now.*

Oh yeas, you all been doing an excellent job at modding. It's not the modding part that is even the slight of worrisome. Just the reaction you cant control. And that can be worrisome. For example, with a Meme in this thread that got a reply along the lines of "Photoshop the brain down to about 1/10 the size and give the guy a magnifying glass." which implied that Kim has small brain. Although not the classic outrageous ranting, if it was about someone or soemthing else, it would had been taken a great offense even though the subliminal meaning is the same.  Maybe he do havea small brain maybe he dont, but if say that Meme was about Tony for example and get the same quote. I doubt the following postings would be a whole lot different.

But what I was proposing earlier was a section that is specifically about NCSoft and or their buisness practice. I recall one of the goals was to get the word out about how NCSoft handle the situation. And if word is truely indeed getting out and some people come snooping here, I think it would be good if they could click on a section and see how bad it really was. Instead of having go post to post some with titles that have nothing to do with the hate of NCSoft and or how small their brain is. Or even title it Everything you need to know about NCSoft, add this thread there and boom, a person coming in to see what is happening and tryign to inquire about what we are saying about NCSoft can click on a section and it's all right there laid out for them in one section instead of sprinkled throughout the forum. Concentrated fire is what I'm talking about. While those that may not want to see it every post can also enjoy themselves without being on edge. And those that have something to say about NCSoft can speak their mind without anythign standing in their way and it being visible without any sort of doubt that it's the entire goal of Titan. It's just another section that is "off to the side" officially that just happen to be there for people to vent, but really a tool for people that may join and may have or may have not heard about the details of what NCSoft have done and that it's not just ranting of random emotional people reacting in response to something someone else said but a place where it's a "fair" assessment of their reputation among gamers that may or may not be COX players. Hell, it could be a Tabula Rasa player passing through and want to speak his mind of how they feel and they have a section for it. Hope that clears it up a bit. Sorry for the length.

nah nah I know. That why I used it as an example because I knew it wasnt serious intent so less chance of me pissing someone off instead of using one that might have been serious and written with hurt emotions and come off as attacking their emotions which is not my intentions at all.

But I hope that since I used an example that wasnt a serious jab at anyone, the point wasnt lost.

Well to be fair I was doing a send up of "They Saved Hitler's Brain".  There isn't a lot of suitable options at Pulp-o-Matic that could apply to a MMOKiller meme.  I admit it was more personal than intended.

Taek Jin Kim is unquestionably a very bright man.  However that doesn't mean he doesn't make wrong headed decisions or at the very least understand the consequences of those decisions down the road.

Very neatly done, Lady Shin.

"I absolutely love it!"

Nice of you to say. I wonder if you know the source material? Virtual cookie to the first to ID the image.  :)

"This is so fitting with what I have witnessed happening on these forums..."

Little vague, though. What have you witnessed?

I'm a bit late I think, but I'd have to say it's from the movie Van Helsing, when the villagers try to destroy Frankenstein and his creator.

To which Frankenstein demands with a mighty bellow as his creator lay dying, 'WHY?!?!?!' ...They have no answer.

EDIT: and nooo, I didn't browse through any responses to try and copy them if they got it right.  :P

Further edit: My favorite line in that movie is where the priest is trying to send Frankenstein to his death...and Frankenstein resists.

The priest goes..'But you're supposed to die!'

Frankenstein... 'I want to live!'

Wow!!  both images really reach and "speak" to me; thank you, LadyShin!  I actually surfed in to write something else, so here goes.  While I like all the humor and feel or rather KNOW our cause is just, I feel like the very least we can do is look at root causes.  by this i mean why did ncsoft execs do this?  and why was their manner even brusque and callous.  I think part of the reason lies here at home within the United States, for all i know maybe parts of Europe.  Somewhere along the road after World War II the United States pretty much just decided it was the "top." the most "super" of the Super Power nations.  That supremacy was largely supported by Western Europe; e.g. the N.A.T.O. Allies, with the Soviet Block of countries behind the Iron Curtain, as well as the rising importance militarily but especially economically of Red China (sorry for my early 1960s lingo; it's now just China, of course).  Anyhow what that meant is post-WW2 much of the so-called Free World looked up to and respected the United States.  Now as a U.S. citizen and patriot I'm proud to report that my nation and homeland does indeed have some virtues, many worth emulating.  The downside is that we're not perfect and have flaws, and tragically often flaws get copied as much as the good stuff.  Consequently, I feel like what we are personally on the receiving end of, what NCSoft execs have done is 'cause inadvertently WE/our culture taught them to be that way: to prize money over virtue and ideals, even noble ones.  Just imagine if you will the most compulsive shiney-chaser that ever existed in gaming and go further, and that's an executive; it's their character class - or if you prefer it's a characteristic of their class.  Other than turning pigs into pigskins I don't see any way for pigs to fly, except maybe in their dreams like Charlotte and Wilbur.  [I am assuming you've all read Charlotte's Web http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte%27s_Web ]

Thanks as always Titans for letting me speak my mind and say my piece.  And speaking of piece, Peace Out!   :)  Love ya, SG!

Au contraire, monsieur   This image is not at all weak; rather it reminds me forcibly of 1950's post-WW2 USA science fiction.  People had been star-gazing for centuries if not millennia.  You guys all remember Cyrano de Bergerac's famous tale of traveling to the moon centuries before humankind got there (hello, Apollo 11); in much the same way speculative fiction of the 1950's, that "out there" stuff, fueled an entire generation to make that Journey and transformed a Cold War into a Space race - infinitely preferable to global nuclear sepaku.  Thus i'd say, FatherXmas, that your image is rather strong....

Oh, not even close. But NCSoft has crossed a moral line for me, and made themselves valid targets. I'm happy to tell any and everyone that NCSoft is to MMOs what strip-miners are to the environment -- greedy, unfeeling and destructive.

The interior of Luke's homestead (the pit where he ate dinner with his uncle and aunt) is actually a hotel, still in existence and would have been used again for the prequels, if the prequels actually existed in my world. Fortunately, they do not. In my dimension The Matrix has no sequels, nor have any Alien sequels appeared since the eighties. It's a better world, and you're all welcome to join me here.

Let's not forget their mission statement - it's a really simple one. (grammar issues belong solely to NCSoft  :P)

Mission:
"To make people in this world happier - The ultimate mission of NCSoft is to make each and every one on earth happier. That is, to make people's lives more enjoyable."

Format:
Small: "Our organization is built on trust and tight enough that there is no communication barrier."
Strong: "Our product and service are excellent that we are proud of being the best. Our company is firm and resilient."
Substantive: "We create real value to make progress and deliver the best to our customers. We always try to be excellent at what we are doing."

Spirit:
Do the right thing!
"Do not hesitate doing what is right. Be brave at carrying out what we believe is right into practice."

To this, I quote a wise man: "Do, or do not. There is no try."

At the risk of sounding cliched... actions speak louder than words. And NCSoft's actions over the years have proven they don't care about customers - current, past, potential or otherwise.

Ignoring the closure of CoH for now, what else had they done to prove they don't care about customers?

Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa were financial failures.  Period.  Dungeon Runners was a tiny, quirky, MMO and it simply wasn't making enough money to keep it open.  Exteel was closed world wide since it didn't have a steady income in the west or the east anymore and the income it did have simply was just too small.

So why is closing games that aren't making enough money to be profitable is now not caring about the customer?  Again I'm subtracting CoH out of the conversation here.

And that is what I'm confused about really. On one hand, those 4-5 games that NCSoft closed is said to have good reason to close those games.  On the other hand it's being used a evidence that NCsoft have/had a bad track record in caring for it's customers and wanton habits closing of games. I wondering which is it. If they had this track record for this long why outrage now and not a care in the world for those other closed games when it happened to them nor bad feelings towards NCSoft and their business practices then at those moments.  But if they had good reason as stated by multiple people now, and evident by lack of outrage when it happened because they had good reason for closign those other games, then their track record was clean until now and thus nullfying the statements  that they had history of closing down games in a wanton fashion. Just curious and confused about which one is it.

IIRC Tabula Rasa was wrecked by NCSoft before release. It was almost ready to go when NCSoft decided it wasn't "Korean grindy" enough. They forced through some changes which made it too Korean for the west and not Korean enough for the east so it failed.

I don't think that NCsoft isn't totally blameless in any of these games.  I'm going off of memory here, so take it for what it's worth, but as I recall, NCsoft laid off a bunch of people including some of the founders from Auto Assault, cutting it to the bone, before the game turned into a financial failure.  Tabula Rasa was just kind of a SNAFU all around, especially on NCsoft's part.  I mean, I can understand them being upset about Richard Garriott going on his space adventure (and make no mistake, if I had some means to do so, I'd do the exact same thing), but their reaction to it was like shooting themselves in the nose to spite their face.  It was just handled VERY badly.  Also as I recall (it's been a few months since I researched all of this), there was actually some other company successfully running Exteel in Asia that was paying licensing fees to NCsoft, and NCsoft chose to cancel the arrangement and deliberately kill off the game in markets in which it was doing okay.  I can't really speak much to Dungeon Runners as I never played it, but I do think it's a sad day when tiny quirky MMOs are canceled.

City of Heroes was just the most egregious mistake they made, but make no mistake, mistakes were made with the other games.  The biggest one is that NCsoft seems to pick and choose not just winners that they will hype and market the hell out of, but losers that they systematically cut off from any support or marketing, then supposedly look justified in killing later due to lack of interest and/or subscriber base.  And not to put too fine a point on it, but marketing and support are the primary functions of a game publisher, which makes them pretty damn bad at the very thing they're supposed to be doing best as a company.

Except NCsoft was only the distributor of Auto Assault, Net Devil was their own entity, NCsoft didn't own them.  So I couldn't see how NCsoft laid off developers from a company they didn't own.  According to MMOCharts AA barely peaked over 11,000-12,000 players.  For an MMO released in the mid 2000s, that was failure.

Yes, Tabula Rasa was a developmental train wreck that was pushed out onto the public unfinished.  Here is an article (http://t-machine.org/index.php/2009/01/16/we-need-to-talk-about-tabula-rasa-when-will-we-talk-about-tabula-rasa/) about the development of Tabula Rasa at T-machine, a blog by a former CTO for NCsoft Europe, someone who was outside of the direct development but inside enough to be included on the developers e-mail distribution lists.  It's a fascinating read.  He also has some things to say (http://t-machine.org/index.php/2012/10/16/reaction-to-coh-city-of-heroes-community-and-ncsofts-response/) about CoH's closure and our attempts to get the IP.  He also has a POV (http://t-machine.org/index.php/2009/11/02/online-games-as-a-billion-dollar-business/) about NCsoft's development economics.

As an aside I found this (http://www.raphkoster.com/2007/06/10/crossing-the-cultural-gap/) post about the player numbers NCsoft was seeing in the Korean version of CoH, no wonder they closed it.

And of course NCsoft isn't blameless, it was their money and decision making behind each of those games.  But by whatever criteria they use, profit margin, outright profit (must make X amount of profit), foreseeable additional development costs, they pulled the plug on those games.  But if the reports were true that it cost NCsoft 100,000 million KrW to develop and they only foresaw (http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/02/123_19134.html) 15,000 million KrW in sales in it's first year.  That's a monumental failure.

That's the kind of failure that makes senior management at any company quadruple guess at every decision from that point on.  The kind of failure that makes management attempt to micromanage development.

I rather enjoyed the time I spent in the Auto Assault beta, including the brief time spent shortly after release(this was just before I -finally- converted from dial-up to Broadband/DSL); it was fun, had stuff blowing up, cars with big guns, and cars with big guns blowing up OTHER cars with big guns(sense a pattern here?)!!  :)

But yeah, I also felt that, despite it seeming ahead of it's time, it was also pushed Live -way- too soon...another 6-8 months spent bashing out some issues, and it could've really been a success, if you ask me....

Maybe they were estimating based on a "normal" advertising budget for MMOs.

Of course, CoH/V/P didn't really have a "normal" advertising budget...

My only issue with NCSoft having a "special place in their heart" for CoH is how stupid they think we are to believe that all of CoH can fit into something you need an electron microscope even to see.

Well, when you think about it, I suppose you could say The One Ring sort of had a special place in Gollum's heart, too.

Or - to use a more superheroic sort of example - the orange battery has a special place in Larfleeze's heart.
