This is a weekend I myself am not available (and this is probably a dumb question because I just can't see the answer from work), how can I become a sponser to support the effort (and give to charity :) ) even if I can't actually play that day?

If you look that good by the end I'll be surprised. I'm super excited to see you all join the team. I should really start fundraising soon myself. I'm third in the team. :P

If you want to sponsor someone doing the event go to the page for the City of Heroes team and donate to their hospital.

Folks...I am throwing my hat in the ring.

For the last two years I have participated in in-game charity events for Real World Hero, and have been devastated that I could never contribute financially. I still can't, this year.

I will do the next best thing. I will "run" the marathon. I hope you all support me, and the rest of our team, and we'll stand tall and proud together.

My donation page is here: http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.participant&participantID=36654

If you choose not to donate to me, I sincerely hope you find it in your hearts to support another team mate. Together, we can--and will--change the world for the better.

We are heroes. This is what we do.

Hm. Somebody mentioned that this might conflict with a "media day" event if they ran on the same day, but I actually think this might work in coordination with such a thing, if we could work it out. I'll re-read the OP in this thread and see if anything in it would conflict with trying to invite media people to come see the game first-hand. Showing them an active charity event going on at the same time and even offering them a chance to interview participants (or to participate themselves) might be very powerful.

It wouldn't conflict at all. I know OnRPG.com is planning on updating once an hour every 24 during the event from City of Heroes.

Yeah. That was me. I don't know why the idea of tying the two events together didn't occur to me, though. Now that you say it aloud, so to speak, it sounds brilliant.

I will discuss joining in with my husband.  Gonna need Redbull and whatnot..but I know *I* will be willing to help out.  My hospital will be the IWK Grace in Halifax because 1: It's close to me 2: it's benefitted my extended family and friends (And those of my husbands coworkers)  So I will discuss this with my husband and see if I can get him to cover childcare for me on the Sunday so I can crash out.

A group of students and I did the Second Life game-a-thon a few years back, and we broadcast the entire 24 hours on w00t Radio. We ended up coming in 2nd in overall fundraising.

Count me in, it's for a good cause! Well, two of 'em in fact...  :)

Can you send me a link to a list of hospitals in the UK?  All I could find were hospitals in the US, and it might be hard to get folks here in the UK to contribute to those when we have children's hospitals like Great Ormond Street in London that need support.

There isn't really a link I can send, the Hospital Network seems to have its website US centered. But in the Extra Life application if you scroll down far enough in the pick your hospital drop down you will see the following for the UK: Children's Hospital For Wales, Royal Hospital For Sick Children, and The Helping Hand Charity to the Royal Belfast Hospital.

Maybe not, check out the FAQ: http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=cms.page&id=1005&eventID=508

While its true you can do it anytime I don't think it is really the best idea unless you have a buddy. 24 hours is a long time especially if you're doing it alone.

And my real life doesn't stop for 24 consecutive hours these days...let alone the 24 hours I'd need after that to recover. @.@

I just finished posting a contribution to a prescription drug abuse deterrence toolkit. Now I need to go study. It kind of goes like that for me.

I can't commit to the whole 24 due to RL demands, but I'll be joining in as much as possible. I've also already made a donation, and as funds allow I'll donate to others.

I still need me a synapse and a citadel, so be on the lookout for Gypsy Witch that day!

Thanks to all who have organized and are participating in this event.

if we need sponsors we can get some of the big kahunas that we have been getting awareness for our cause to become sponsors for us like Kevin Smith, Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Stan Lee just to name a few to see what we are doing to help as well?

That would be pretty awesome. I know Titan Network has already done a tweet about it and sadly I just don't have the time to contact the the big names. But if any of you want to take that up that would be fantastic.

Okay, looking for some answers before I sign-up.

1.  I can do this 24 hour thing solo and/or teamed if I want?
2.  It doesn't have to be 24 hours straight on the same character, does it?

If both those are yes solo and/or teamed is fine and yes you can switch characters as much as you want I cannot help but say yes and try even if 24 hours straight is a bit crazy.

I LOVE the idea of the money going to a certain local hospital and would not be shocked if there's a decent amount of support from my facebook page alone for that hospital even in this lousy economy.  I'm not feeling terribly well today so sorry if my questions have been answered (I really did read the whole thread twice-but this sinus/headcold thing is not helping me think straight).

Pretty sure we can team up if we want to. Not sure about the second question. I personally intend to play the same character for that entire time, and it will be one I create just for the event. That doesn't necessarily mean you have to, it's just what I plan to do. ;)

Fair enough.  I have this crazy tendency to switch through characters per play session because I see something and think "oh man, why am I NOT playing that right now?" and tend to switch to whatever "that" is shortly after being reminded of it.  If this is a one character is recommended only to play kind of thing I would have to go brute because I tend to go "brute raging" and not get distracted that way at least.   ;D

Most excellent, thank you for the quick reply.  Hope the wedding went great!  You have now given me zero reasons to say no to doing this (minus my husband going out of town for work that weekend last minute-knocks on wood).  Figure I'll sign myself up in the next day or two!

I have decided I will make a new toon for this event. Trying to decide what atm....leaning towards a heroic corruptor. I am open to creating this on any server so please let me know if we have a charity team planned on any specific server. I will be stocking up on Coffee, Pepsi max, and snacks lol. I am in the Mountain time zone (-2 hours from Eastern).

Would really like to be with a team of others doing this event so we can document our progress with pics/videos etc :)

Possible Toons (Hero Side):
Ice/Kin Corruptor
War Mace/Electric Brute
Empathy/Dark Defender

My husband and I will for sure be playing on Virtue. We haven't decided what characters we will bring but I imagine we will certainly want to alt around a bit to get xp on several of our  characters. We're also rpers, but anyone is welcome to join us.

I have no issues making a new toon on Virtue, but I am absolutely not a RPer nor am I into it....

If that is going to be an issue I can try and start up a Charity team on another server if people like.

Just wanna team as much as possible with other charity participants irregardless of the server.

Ditto on this. Smersh & I will either roll two new, purpose-built characters... or bounce among alts... but blueside Virtue is guaranteed.

HI all!

my global is @mwruger & @mwruger2. I am signing up this event as well. I'm putting the link up, but please Do not Sponsor Me. There are plenty of other gamers on here for you to choose from. Let me explain. http://www.extra-life.org/participant/36884

I am a community activist and an environmental organizer in Houston Texas. I have access to a listserv with over 11,000 addresses. If I can convince my boss I am going to tap that list and our social media outlets. I know 2 or 3 professional fund raisers. Many local organizers in various communities. My thought is that since this is for a good cause, a world wide known local hospital, that I can convince them to promote this as a human interest piece.
My sister, also plays and will spell me if needed.

I'll update as soon I can.

Hi all,

Do you think those of us on the team (and who ever else might be interested) could set up a voice chat or something for the event? I don't expect that my boyfriend will be able to stay up with me the entire time, and those wee hours will get tricky. I'd like to hear real voices, instead of the ones in my head...

All signed up!

http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.participant&participantID=36907

My global is @resolute and I will be using the in-game SaveCoH (or well, whatever it is if my spelling here is off sorry) for support/encouragement in-game as needed throughout the 24 hours.  So for those of you who cannot play 24 hours or donate another way to help is definitely offering moral support when you can to help us crazy enough to play 24 hours straight!

I'm not an RPer and will happily join any team as long as no one minds me being quiet AND I don't get the star.  I'm also on most every server...and, well, am going to try to make characters on those I'm not currently on just for flexibility during this event.

As I've told everyone on my Facebook page, I'm not just doing this for the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital or the game but also in memory of my little man who, in a perfect world, would have been 6 this month (instead of stillborn).  So, as a mom, thank you for bringing this event to my attention (never heard of Extra Life before) and giving me an opportunity to do something awesome in his honor...it's something I've been wanting to do but until now really hadn't found just the right thing and this feels right.  Words cannot convey how happy this makes me to be a part of this!

Which server do you think you will be playing on for the event?

I have toons on almost every server, so I can attend events with an alt.

But I suspect the majority of time will be on Liberty.

I know it's low pop, but it has been my COH home since I started playing. I can't count the hours of fun and companionship I have had there and I can't bear to see it not represented in what could be COH's finest and final hours. So I will stand for Liberty.

I have never played on Liberty, but am looking for teammates for the day.
What time zone are you in? I am Mountain (-2 hours form Eastern).

I am going to do my absolute best to play the entire 24 hours (and then sleep all day Sunday LOL!)

I've set up an account, but I won't link it here so I can still pretend to have a degree of anonymity.  I've sent out notices on Facebook and will email people I know that may not otherwise see those notices.

I'm planning on mostly playing my various alts, which are almost entirely on Virtue.  In 7 years I've only gotten 3 characters to 50, so maybe I can get a good chunk of the way while my eyes bleed in this marathon.   :P

HI all!

my global is @mwruger & @mwruger2.

It doesn't seem to show you as part of the City of Heroes team for some reason.

I will make a toon on Liberty to play with you on 10/20 :) I can also transfer a toon over if need be (All my toons are 50s).
The toon I will probably make will either be a corruptor or a controller - haven't decided yet.

When is everyone planning on starting?

I'm planning to nap on Friday evening and start my run at midnight PST. Smersh will probably run from when Munchkin gets up Sat. AM to whatever 24 hours later is (so neither of us has to be a totally sleep deprived parent).

You make an excellent point, it would be loads easier to be on a normal schedule going midnight to midnight instead of 8am-8am.  Hadn't really given it that much thought myself but planning on being on when most everyone else who is doing this plans to be on.

Everyone, meet Play Games Heal Kids (Staff/Willpower Stalker). I won't play her until the 20th, but I couldn't resist the lure of the costume creator. :D

Bio: I'm on a mission, with Team City of Heroes, to save kids through video games, and I need your help.

My local Children's Miracle Network Hospital, Seatttle Children's Hospital, treats thousands of children each year, regardless of their family's ability to pay. These kids are facing scary stuff like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and injuries from accidents to name just a few.

On Oct. 20th, 2012, I'll attempt to play an epic 24 hour video game marathon and it's my sincere hope that you'll find it in your heart to support me with a monthly pledge or one-time gift that will go directly to my hospital.Your donation is tax-deductible and ALL PROCEEDS go to help kids.

It's not too late to donate. Just go to:  http://www.extra-life.org/participant/SiberianSpring

I am going to be using my namesake I BURNT THE TOAST for the charity event. Going to be doing every Hero TF. I may make a lowbie as well to play some not sure yet. So far my charity partner and I are the only ones in our group, but we are working on some of our global friends so it can be the 8 of us TFing it for 24 hours. Gonna be soooo tired Sunday, but well worth it.

I work a pretty strict 4 on 4 off and I work that day so I won't be able to commit the time, but I'll try to jump in and play around when I get home from work for a while and I'll donate something.  Children's Miracle Network is a good charity that I'd like to support.

I'll probably go from midnight to midnight, but that depends on my work schedule.  I asked for Saturday off, but if I'm closing Friday/opening Sunday, I might start at 11 PM Friday so I can get enough rest.

I plan on running a Numina TF with my Virtue BS/SR scrapper Questing Eagle.  It's the last TF she needs for the accolade, and somehow in 8 years I never did it with her.  (Generally I wound up on my empath for Numina.)  Other than that, I dunno, I guess I'll bounce around alts until something interesting happens.

Oh, and here's my link, if anyone wants to donate.  http://www.extra-life.org/participant/LadyAndreca (http://www.extra-life.org/participant/LadyAndreca)

Was definitely hoping we would have been higher in the total amount of pledges by now.

I have a very limited social network and have done as much as I can...and continue to every day. I wish these thousands of #SaveCoHers would donate even $5 to the participants of this cause. As it stands now...a week into...we have raised less money than it took to raise for the dev dinner (in 3 hours). It just infuriates me that such a  great cause is basically going ignored by the "movement." Not only will it help children with debilitating disease, but it is also a great PR move to show that the heroes of CoH are true heroes fighting to save lives while their universe is faced with impending doom.

I have got two friends to join Extra Life; one donated to themselves and I donated to the other and myself ($12 each). All of us are disheartened by the lack of support this campaign is receiving. Our goal was to do every Hero TF - document it through lots of pics etc... but at this point with no one but ourselves sponsoring us...doubt we will even log in on 10/20 :(

If every poster on these forums gave $5 imagine how much money we could raise for Children's Miracle Network.... just saying.

Not sure how much clicking you wanna do or how much you were going to donate, but imo spreading it out among a lot of the players seems like a good idea. Like $5 to some etc...

I plan on donating $50 more Friday when I get paid... Figured I would pick 10 people and donate $5 to each of them.

I got my friend a $50 sponsorship today so that made me feel better. I have tapped all my social networking and have come up with nada for myself though; which means I will probably just donate $15 more on Friday to myself. There are currently 9 people sitting at $0 so I guess when I get paid I will donate $5 to each of them as well. If those people who have signed up do not plan on doing the event itself; please let me know and I will forward my donation to someone else.

I just checked my bank account and NCSoft sent me a refund of $13.06 (prolly cuz my sub renewed on 8/27??)....so that gives me a lil more money to donate with. Wish everyone would donate their monthly sub for September that they didn't have to pay.

I am still trying to get donors; just afraid people on twitter are like "SHUDDUP!!!!!" hehehe.

I don't have any family or I would hit them up LOL!
I can't ask co-workers (I work in a prison as a Federal contract employee/Dept. Homeland Security)...and that kind of stuff is extremely frowned upon.

I'm right there with you B.T. in hoping we get a ton of money raised for this because, frankly, it's an amazing cause.  As a mom, I've got three in school and my goodness are we getting hit right now with A LOT of fundraising for that too.  We've sold over 30 raffle tickets, over 100 candy bars, and I think my son's going to be starting something else shortly.  Not to mention volunteer time, donating prizes for the raffle (another $50 there), and baking 8 cakes for their cake walk ($10-15 in supplies there too plus a lot of time).  We're doing our best there in spite of paying the school the $100 family opt-out of fundraisers fee, the $12 PTA member fee, and field trips galore have already been cropping up (those trips add up quick, $18 already and it's only October!).  I personally have not donated to this yet (as you can guess that other stuff adds up!) but will be.  I can't help but figure we will be getting more support as the event date comes closer.  This time of year it seems like everything fundraising comes out of the woodwork is all so don't be too discouraged yet.  We're heroes, we'll get this done!   :)

PS...forgot to add I'm still only at one sponser and I have been posting/reaching out a ton.  Gail Simone was even super awesome and retweeted my link!!!  Had to edit this and give her props as she rocks!

You know what might be an...interesting maneuver...

Do we know a good contact point to invite NCSoft to put up "matching funds" donations to this? This would need to be done very delicately, but done just right, we could make this part of the "carrot" side of things. IT would be very good PR for them to be seen helping out with "heroic charity stuff," but would then be even harder for them to keep refusing to work with us. And if they refuse...well, that looks bad, too.

Surely they'd see fit to help us, as I must take the sincerity of their messages to be genuine. The problem would be finding a forum that is likely to reach them. Perhaps something very public could be done to highlight our charity efforts, and extend the invitation to NCsoft to join us? Massively could help with that, if we could impose on them.

Of course that doesn't mean NCsoft did...

As a player, wishing to participate, is this a Free sign-up, or is a donation from me required?

As much as I would love to donate, that simply isn't in the cards for me, this month. So, I want to clarify that I can do this, without spending money I don't have.

Thanks, and sorry if this has already been covered :(.

I was just debating on whether to become a platinum member at Extra Life (It's a $15 fee to be Platinum but you get a t-shirt if ya raise $200 and are eligible for drawings of freebies).  I decided instead of spending that $15 for a tshirt and the chance to win a prize...it would be better spent on actually donating to someone.

Once Friday is here I am going to sit down and figure out how much I can donate then split it up between people :)

I just wanted to give a bit of an update. I seem to be slowly coming out of the haze that was the first cold of the season. I logged into Extra Life to find that we are 30th! We've raised $2,437.98 (someone donate 2 cents so we have a round number! :P) and that is 1% of the total that has been raised by the entire event! 1% doesn't sound like much but that is huge! Most teams will never even make it to a full percent of what is raised. There are 32 people taking part so far and we hope that more of you will join us. I know the prospect of playing any game for 24 hours straight can be a bit intimidating but it is so much fun. Please come check out our team.

We are Heroes...

Ok, I'm in on this too for the City of Heroes team!

I'll have to use a couple Vacation Days from work to participate on the contest days, but I should use some of them up anyway.

This is what we do!

Out of curiosity, how many teams have entered? Can we check that somewhere too? XD

There are 1,750 teams right now. But teams can be as small as one person. I can see it as part of the Team Stats.

I can't seem to send out thank you e-mails to my anonymous donors (which kinda makes sense) so I've been posting general thank yous were I've been posting my link.  So a BIG thank you to my two mystery donors!!!!  It's a nice feeling to know someone's got your back and I genuinely appreciate that feeling right now.  You're also helping me set a good example for my kids as well as helping out an awesome cause so I hope you feel as good as I do about this event!   :)

I think, though I'm not 100% sure, but I think Thank Yous are sent out to anonymous donors automatically. I know I got one nearly right away when I made my anonymous donation.

I must be missing something here... is there a way to register on the site just to make donations without flagging myself as a participant?  I'd like to make a series of donations and spread my contribution around, but it seem like the only way I can find to set up a login so that I don't have to keep typing my info in is to register as a participant and set a fundraising goal.

As far as I know the website only makes registration for participants. Most people who donate tend to only do so to one person so I imagine that sort of thing has never come up before.

I hope it does, I am hoping we can coordinate the media day event with Extra Life... I'm the idiot with the media day event...

I want all the events to achieve their goals and more....

Actually, though I've let the thread (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,5388.0.html) fall to the second page due to having been unable to make progress the last couple of days on advancing it, I've been organizing the media day event. If you want to move in and take some of the effort up, I'd more than welcome your aid! My current plan is to write tonight or tomorrow a "press release" style invitation and put it in the thread for people to review and help me make sure it's professional. Then, tomorrow, I'm going to take the day off work (flex time is a wonderful thing) and look at where to SEND it to get news institutions' attention and hopefully get some reporters from major sources to come and participate.

Everyone, there's someone I'd like you to meet.

This is The 7 Stars of Virtue, and he will be the toon I run on the 20th. He will be the only toon I run, from 8am on the 20th until 8am on the 21st. Some of you won't be there for the event--stuff happens!--so I would like to share with everyone here his backstory. Please beware the ninjas with onions ahead!

tinyurl.com/ExtraLife36654

There once was a boy named Daniel. He was a very sick little boy, made that way by some very bad men. Daniel's parents were always sad, or sometimes mad, because Daniel was sick.
Daniel knew he would need to leave his parents, and wouldn't be able to make them smile anymore because of the bad men.
Daniel didn't feel mad, though. He just wanted to make sure no one else was sad like him, or his parents.
When it was time for him to go, Daniel wished against a star-filled sky with all his might that no one would be made sad by the bad men.

This time...his wish was heard. A very old star, near the end of his days, called his seven children together. He asked them to honor his passing by granting Daniel's last wish. His last burst of power sent his children hurling to Earth, where they knew they would have their work cut out for them. They combined their powers, becoming one awesome being that took a shape like Daniel might have one day.

The 7 Stars of Virtue was born!

The reason I've left it blank up until now is because I didn't want to restrict us by making it look like we're only members of the Save CoH movement. When in reality anyone who has ever/does play City of Heroes, including devs are more than welcome to join us.

Just popping in here to let anybody who isn't looking at the Media Day thread: we've settled on the 20th for it. Let me know how, if at all, you'd like me to cross-promote. I'm working on the press release for inviting the media right now, and I've got a physical venue for anybody who can make it to Rolla, Missouri to attend a gaming convention that I think will give us some floor- and table-space for setting up computers.

The main thrust of this will be virtual, though. My thought is that our media guests might be interested in hearing from people doing charity work through the game, so if anybody is interested in being available for online interviews, please pop over to this thread (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,5388.0.html) to chime in. If you expressly do NOT want to be approached, please also let us know so we can try to respect your wishes.

This is a big project - especially compared to anything like it I've done before - so thanks to all who are interested in helping. I'm excited! This could help us break open the awareness to the wider world.

We (Team CoH) are currently at $3,190.00!!!! And still in 22nd place :)

I posted this on the Official forums:

Quote
A friend and I are both participants in this and have both raised $63. My goal is $200....sloooowly getting there. Extra Life is an excellent organization as is the Children's Miracle Network.

Team CoH is currently at $3,165.00!!!

I would love to see just 1/4 of the players who were VIP donate their monthly sub to this cause... that would be an AMAZING amount and truly show how this community is truly Heroic. So that is my challenge for the community. It's easy to say you are a hero...but it's another thing to actually play the role in real life. There are thousands of children and families who are assisted daily by CMN...and this is your chance to be a hero to those families and children.

I want team CoH to be in the top 10; preferably the top 5 of this campaign, but to do that we need your help. I'm not saying you have to donate $15...heck even $5 from the thousands of players of this game would make a world of difference.

The top team in this campaign is sitting at $25,304.98. So in order to overtake them and show what an awesome community this game has...that it is full of heroes (and villains with ulterior motives  ) all we would need is for everyone to donate $5 to easily overtake the top spot...and then some

So please... take the 5 minutes and few dollars it would take and donate to the Extra Life campaign. If we MUST go out... I want our impact to be felt throughout the world...in a positive way...being heroes and helping families in need.

We are heroes...this is what we do!

Team CoH Main Webpage: http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?...am&teamID=9445

I'm not going to "advertise" my own personal link...I would rather people just pick a random person and donate. It doesn't matter if I reach my goal or not...what truly matters is that we raise the funds to be true heroes.

Thanks

The thread is about to fall onto Page 2 where it will go into oblivion among the troll post etc. I think it important we keep this thread alive here as well as over there.

Has anybody considered approaching NCSoft or NCWest about donating matching funds to this event? I suggest pros and cons of both even approaching them and of the consequences of their acceptance/refusal be discussed a bit, and if it's decided the pros of approaching outweigh the cons of both approaching and the consequences of either response NCSoft gives, somebody take charge of writing the invitation and sending it to the appropriate individuals.

My husband works in development in the non-profit sector, so he's knowledgeable of "best practices" that work for fundraising efforts. I had him help me when I got going on my efforts, I figured it'd be helpful if I passed along the advice he gave me to the rest of you.

Make sure you set a profile picture. Not having one makes it seem like you couldn't be bothered. Having one makes it more personal and allows people to better relate to you -- and that means they're more likely to donate, and more likely to donate more.

Make sure you personalize the appeal message on your profile page. You don't have to write it from scratch, but it's crucial that you make it personal. Why are you participating in this campaign? Why is this important to you? Connect it to you on a personal level. The generic language is good, but putting it in your own words is much, much better.

As an aside to that point, please don't say your primary reason for doing this is to raise awareness for City of Heroes. We don't want to make it seem like we're just using this event to further our own aims. Hopefully everybody participating believes that this charity is worthwhile on its own merits, independent of the pending events in our own community. Focus on that. It might be okay to reference those events lightly, but make sure they don't seem like your primary motivation here.

Make sure you set a fundraising goal! Ideally, you should set your goal low enough that you're pretty confident you can easily reach it. Then once you reach it, set a new goal that's a bit higher. And when you reach that goal, set an even higher one. You want to keep your progress such that you always seem like you're close and within reach of your goal, but not quite there. That is apparently proven to increase donations. For an example, I started mine at $100; when I hit $104, I raised it to $150; when I hit $204, I raised it to $250; when I hit $304, I raised it to $400.

A good way to raise funds is to approach people individually. Posting to Twitter or Facebook may help bring in some donations, but directly approaching someone will be much more successful. The Extra Life website has an interface to make it easy to send out an email, but I encourage you to write your own email and send it to each potential donor one at a time. That makes it feel much more personal, and less like you just clicked a button to send them an automatic message.

Once you've received a donation, make sure you follow up with a thank you message as soon as possible. Do not wait to think people until after the event is over! People need to be thanked immediately. This improves a donor's sense that their contribution was appreciated and, even more importantly, it helps improve donor retention -- that means that if you run the event again next year, they're more likely to donate again and they're also more likely to increase their donation.

After the event is over, it's also a good practice to send out a final message thanking everybody again and letting them know the wonderful success you and our team have had. That's separate from the first thank you message, though.

A little bit of extra work goes a long way towards raising money for these kids! :)

These apply equally well to our team page!! We do have a personalized the appeal message for the team page. But we definitely need to get some sort of image on there, and we definitely should set a team goal.

Maybe use this (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/File:Hero_side_icon.jpg) if nothing else, though hopefully someone can suggest something better. It shouldn't be a "SaveCoH" graphic. It should just be a graphic that represents the City of Heroes game and community. This is pretty important, and it's easy to make happen! :)

A goal is also easy to set. Right now a goal of $4000 would be good. If When we hit that, then we can raise it to $5000.

In case it helps anyone, you can look at my donor page to see how I personalized it a bit: http://www.extra-life.org/participant/36685 As you can see, I didn't rewrite the whole thing. I just added some personal touches. And here's the email I sent out to some of my family:

Quote
On October 24, I'll be participating in a 24-hour video game marathon to raise money for my local Children's Miracle Network Hospital. Children's Miracle Network Hospitals treat thousands of children each year, regardless of their family's ability to pay. They help kids facing scary stuff like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and injuries from accidents.

I can only imagine how difficult it must be for these families. Facing a life-threatening illness or injury is bad enough without having to try to scrape together funds to pay for very expensive treatments.

The game I'll be playing is called "City of Heroes". In the game I'll get to play a superhero, but it's just a game. This marathon is an opportunity for you and me to be REAL heroes, helping to save kids' lives.

Please consider whether this might be something you'd be willing to donate towards. All proceeds go directly to helping children. You can donate securely through my page at the Extra Life website: http://www.extra-life.org/participant/36685

Please, don't just copy and paste what I wrote. Put it in your own words, it'll be far more effective! :)

In case it helps anyone, you can look at my donor page to see how I personalized it a bit: http://www.extra-life.org/participant/36685 (http://www.extra-life.org/participant/36685) As you can see, I didn't rewrite the whole thing. I just added some personal touches. And here's the email I sent out to some of my family:

Please, don't just copy and paste what I wrote. Put it in your own words, it'll be far more effective! :)

Your personal profile says October 24.... The Extra Life campaign is for October 20th.?.? Not sure if that's a typo or you really plan on doing ti on a Wednesday/Thursday.

I don't know how I missed that.  :o It's a typo and fortunately was only in the email, not my profile page (it says the 20th). Thanks for pointing it out so I can avoid doing that next time. :(

The reason I've left it blank up until now is because I didn't want to restrict us by making it look like we're only members of the Save CoH movement. When in reality anyone who has ever/does play City of Heroes, including devs are more than welcome to join us.

Putting up something is better than leaving it blank. It can be the COH logo...just not empty :)

Question for folks who have made donations... Is it a pledge style, or do they charge the amount right away?

I got my boss to pledge, but it's contingent on me actually making it for 24 hours... Mwuahahahaa... he doesn't know my love for CoX and dedication to a good cause.

fyi... $10/hr that I actually make it.

It's instantly charged, it's not a pledge drive where you have to hunt people down at the end of your run. They donate to the charity and we play for 24 hours, but since they want you to do it in a healthy way, you take breaks and sleep when needed. You can make up the time as well if Real Life steps in.

Could he/she make that donation after the fact then?  That's a pretty awesome pledge and I may not know you personally, but I totally know you'll do it so would hate to see you not be able to take their money for CMN!

I'm also the admin for the office, so I'll actually be entering the info on the site... if it's instantly charged, I'll do it Friday (19th) before I leave work.

Looks like they raised 1.1 million in 2011, I'd imagine they'd get that or more this year. I read a tweet (from emperor cole of all people) (http://heroicdonation.chipin.com/donate-to-help-a-hero) about an individual with a disability in need of help so I'm going to try and scrounge up something. Pay it forward and all that.

I'm late in seeing this but am in!  I'm contacting my 7 and 8 year veteran player-friends who stopped playing shortly after the "sunset" announcement.  Here's hoping both SGs can get behind this initiative (and I think at least a few will if not most since it's heroic, costs only what one can afford, and provides PURPOSE - the main reason most gave for not logging in to play: the painful reminder of the impending loss combined with no goals or purpose.)

Wednesday Mid-day

City of Heroes team - $4041
Ranked #21 in donations

$65 dollars behind the #20 ranked team, and only $162 dollars behind the #19 ranked team

http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.team&teamID=9445 (http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.team&teamID=9445)

If you wish to take part, click the link on that page to "Join This Team".

If you wish to Donate, click any team members name on the list at the bottom of the page, then click the "Support Me!" link on that team members page for an easy and secure online donation.

Don't think you have to give a lot to make a difference. For some teammates a $5 donation would be a doubling of their total! and chipping in the $15 VIP subscription that got cancelled for Oct (or November) would be around a 50% increase for 1/2 of the folks on the team!

If you didn't get a chance to make a Donation for the Dev's Dinner (like I didn't) then consider donating for this.
(The donation page takes credit cards and PayPal)

As a suggestion and encouragement, if you want to do anything to put your money where your mouth is and haven't donated yet, $5 probably won't break anybody's bank. If you're unsure to whom to donate, peruse the team members and donate to the lowest-total person at the time you search. That will have an evening-out effect.

A donation of whatever you find to be nearly nothing from enough of us will make a big difference.

I am going to recommend the formation of an official media day team...with 14 hours of travel I can not play for 24 hours but I bet with mentors, media reps and a collection jar...I suspect we will make a valid team :) collectively.

That sounds like a nice idea, QH, but I want to make sure we won't be splitting efforts from the existing SaveCoH team. Is there an advantage to having a second one rather than encouraging people to join the current one?

Perhaps the word I should have used is "sub-team" as in stll under the auspices of team coh just a collective effort..and the last slot at the con could be pure play time :)
Title: Re: Unity Event: Extra Life Charity Drive and Gameathon
Post by: Segev on October 10, 2012, 08:17:05 PM
Maybe!

I will note that, unless we want to come back in the morning (leaving stuff locked up overnight), we need to get the physical location cleaned up by 11:30 pm. The Con doesn't want to pay campus big extra bucks for staying later than that.

I think we can arrange that easily enough; just make sure we've got all the big stuff put away before we settle in for play time. ^^

Did anyone make any flyers for this to take to their workplace or anything? Ya know, kinda like those silly book folders they used to give us all at school for fundraisers? Just kinda wanted something that I can show people or just have it pinned to a cubicle that they can read, so I don't have to go through the entire story like a door-to-door-salesman speech with every potential donor.

Extra Life has some media resources, though I can't say they make them easy to find on their site:
http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=cms.page&id=1009&eventID=508

They have flyers, but they're for recruiting people to do the game-a-thon itself, not for getting people to contribute money to a game-a-thon-er. But they do have graphics that could be used to help make a flyer.

I agree!

I still think we can rival the folks in the top 10 though.

If we had $1 more for every Hero in Leandro's Unity Rally Video (3700 heroes), we would be breathing down the neck of the #10 team.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XRsj2DtLCQs

If the a large part of the VIPs in the Unity Rally donated their OCT $15 VIP dues (that they aren't being charged in Oct or Nov)... say 2000 VIPs? --  $30, 000 we would be number 2 and in striking distance of #1. (even at $10 we would be #2)

That's without considering the amount of Rally folks on Freedom and spillover into the other servers... and without considering donating Nov VIP payment.

She's also my portrait on Extra-Life now: http://www.extra-life.org/participant/RedHeaded_StepChild

Yeah, I just signed up, adding $50 as that's just about the cost of a 3 month subscription since the announcement.  Now I just need to explain to my girlfriend why I'll be glued in front of the computer during daylight hours on Saturday..... ( ' ;

Going to try and get some donations for this in the next couple days even though there's a 99% chance I won't be able to play at all this weekend.

Question about donations though... when other people donate to you and you're collecting money to donate yourself, instead of sending them to the website (in the case of people who don't like online finance, or may forget it if they don't donate when asked, or your grandmother who doesn't even have internet), how do you handle the tax deductions, receipts, etc?

Team CoH is currently ranked #18 out of 2129 teams for the Extra Life Charity campaign with a total of $5,828.33 in donations!!!!!!

Saturday 10/20 will be the 24 hour gaming marathon which means people still have a few days left to sign up to participate or to donate to a team member.

Extra Life 4 Kids raises money for various Children's Miracle Network Hospitals across the world. These hospitals treat millions of children every year and the monies raised help  offset their costs for treatment for cancer, birth defects, etc.

I am asking you to please be a hero to a child in need. All donations are great donations - there is no such thing as too small of a donation...EVERY dollar raised is one more dollar that can help a child and their family.

Cutting it a bit close on my end, but I'm in and looking forward to this! Although I enjoy donating my time to great causes, it's difficult for me to do much physically. Being given this opportunity is a blessing for us all.

$72 to $6,000! Let's do it!

Still going to keep trying to more donations, but this makes me VERY happy!  ;D

We gotta keep on pushing...have a few days left and at this rate I would not be surprised if we passed the $7,000 mark!

Great job everyone...and thank you to everyone who is supporting this campaign whether it be in donation or in time.

Not having a lot of new donations on my front, but I'm all geared up and psyched up to do the run this week end anyway.

For those who wish to run with me, I will be running on Virtue, starting in AP33. My character name will be 7 Stars of Virtue. My Global handle is @Hawthorne Grimm. Send me a tell once my run starts and I'd be happy to have company for my 24 hour odyssey. :)

A friend and I will be running every hero side TF on Freedom. He is also in the Extra Life campaign. Look me up...we can always use another player :) @I Burnt The Toast. I will be on beginning at 8AM EST.

(Yes we will be doing the Shard TFs which I have... NEVER...done!).

Not a lot of donations on my end either, but all the same, who cares if it was a dollar or a million.  Every little bit helps. :)

I'll be running on Freedom on my main Obsidian Light (@Obsidian Light), if anyone wishes to join me there. If there's a #TeamExtraLife group up at some point or another, don't hesitate to get ahold of me and pull me to wherever everyone is, only picked Freedom because it's home and my bucket list toon is there. :)

Amazing job everyone :) I know I'm proud of all of us, and it's just another reason why it's so sad this community is being ripped apart so unceremoniously. It has been a pleasure, and honor, to fight the good fight with all of you for so long. :)

Stay Heroic :)

I got two donations today - 1 from a fellow CoHer who I have never met (that I know of LOL) and one from a friend in CoH - I need $22 to reach my goal of $200! WOOT!

With 3 days left Extra Life is VERY close to beating last years total already. Last year Extra Life raised 1.2 million and right now the total is sitting at $1,040,239.99!

I plan on keeping up the tweets hehe and will also be announcing in game every hour on Saturday in an effort to help push the total up in the final hours :)

Keep up the great work everyone!!

(Probably going to also be taking a lot of pics on Saturday to document every TF I am doing...as well as stopping by the forums often in between).

Thursday Morning! - Just 2 days left!!!

Be a Hero in the Real World!

My VIP refund will be going into a donation to the
City of Heroes team's Extra-Life game-a-thon charity fundraising for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.team&teamID=9445 (http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.team&teamID=9445)

"Join this Team", or click a team member and click their "Support Me!" banner to donate to them.

Easy, safe, and tax deductible!

$6,299 so far!!! {Awesome work folks!}
We are ranked #19 in donations out of 2,186 teams.
We are just $113 behind the # 18 team!

We are Heroes. This is what we do!

I'll be running "Nine Lives 9", my Justice Iron Eagle II SG character (Last night-I made her a CoH Extra-Life costume for Saturday), then swapping to my many alts on various servers when I feel I getting too tired to be safe with her.

During "eyeball breaks" I'm going to log in various characters, head into a mission or my base and do a demorecord, so I have a version I can use for group shots or just to look at again some day...I've already run all my characters through the Sentinel Extracter a week ago.

I'll be adding the Globals of everyone that has posted them in hopes of getting together at some point on Saturday. Mine is @DrewBlue, for anyone who'd like to find me. I'll be on Freedom at 7am Central with my Peace Bringer, so maybe we can get started together.

I was looking at the Team list and we are positioned to really move up. We are (currently) only $400 behind the #13 team. I'm sure the other teams are still alerting their friends and family as well, but i'd LOVE to see us in the top 15 so we'd make it to the Extra Life Home Page!

I just created a global channel: ExtraLife. I thought that might help with coordinating during the event. Also means that people who want to team up with us during the event can join in even if they aren't actually running the marathon.

Can also be used for simple chat, across servers even. ;)

Just want to say THANKS again to everyone who has donated...your support means a lot to each participant, but more to the families who will be help by local Children's Miracle Network Hospitals!

Every dollar helps, Pandora. Don't sell yourself short, no one is doing this alone. I know MY donations didn't put CHoW in the top ten, it was MANY people banding together. Just like our team (Sorry, I think of those doing the Fundraiser as a Multi-Server Super Group) is not a single person. It is a GROUP EFFORT to fight a Real Life problem. Be proud of what you've done and what you're about to do tomorrow morning, because YOU answered the call. The vast majority (Even those who have been "Heroes" for years) DID NOT.

You have nothing to be down about, you SHOULD be holding your head up high and say, "I am a Hero and this is what we do!"

According to their popular questions answered (http://blog.extra-life.org/2012/10/the-three-most-popular-extra-life-questions-answered.html), they probably won't close out donations until closer to the holidays. So it's not too late to raise more donations! I'm hoping I get a few more during the marathon itself.

Hmmm, I was thinking I would tweet through this, using #TeamCOH and #Extra-Life as hashtags. What do ya'll think?

It is, at long last, over. It was rough here, at the end, but me and The 7 Stars of Virtue toughed it out and achieved level 31 over a 24 hour period from level 1.

Special thanks to:

The Cape Radio for supplying tunes and good cheer.
Ascendant, Pogoman, Ren Inferno, DJ Shecky, Lollipop Dreams, Sonnet, VV, Fred, Whimsy, and many others for teams and company during the 24 hour ordeal.
Extra Life for organizing and creating this initiative in the first place.
Children's Miracle Network for just being plain awesome.

ALL OF YOU, for all of your support, well wishes, and for being the best online gaming community in the world.

...I'm gonna go pass out now.

I did it.  8am AST to 8am AST.  I logged out on the steps of City Hall holding a torch.  I did not change my costume back from the Tiny Pepsiman one that we held our rally in.

I livestreamed the whole thing too.

Well except for the last half hour at the end where my router decided it had enough and I didn't want to reboot my computer to get the stream going again, I only had half an hour left!  But those in the Extra Life Channel were there with me right to the end!

Thanks to all those who sponsored me!!!

Hey all, LOVE your articles ladies!  Also so extremely impressed by all of you who were brave enough to live stream this!!!  Not my thing, no camera for it plus my computer doesn't like the whole alt/tab thing so I'm extra happy to find links to your stuff here.  After 24 hours of play and 12 hours of sleep my brain still feels like mush but I've plugged our event a few more times in hopes more will want to donate for such an awesome charity cause.

Also, a very BIG thank you to Kali for running that Posi 1 and letting me join-needed that pick me up around hour 15!  It was much appreciated.  I'd also like to thank some of the other GREAT COH players who didn't mind letting me pug with them for a decent chunk of time on Exalted even though my lack of skill was truly showing at that point (oh my gosh cannot count how many times I was prematurely slowing/holding mobs the scrapper and tank were trying to pull-really I am sorry if you guys read this but at least I was letting them get to the door ways instead of stopping them at their spawn points I guess...so not normally dense like that).  I'd never really seen wormhole used until yesterday and that helped keep me much more alert too...if I was on a melee character I may have wanted their head though-the mobs were just everywhere!!!  Makes me want to push my gravity controller from 25 to whatever level you get that and figure it out myself now too.  All in all, tiring but fun!

So proud of everyone who participated and entirely grateful to everyone else who put up/helped us make the 24 hours!!!  The community rocks and man am I going to miss this game once NCSoft turns the servers off.  Plus over $8500 raised and counting, great job all!!!!

I return, rested and refreshed. Once again, I am proud of all of you. It is events like this that make me honored to stand up and be a part of this community.

We are heroes, and this is what we do!

Sleep was amazing.  I can't believe I survived the marathon.  We all rock.

I had a great time doing my Extra Life campaign. At the end I got a lil bit delirious LOL. When I crashed at 8AM EST... uhmm I remember getting into bed and that was it.

Did lots of TFs, a few story arcs, made a new toon to goof around with my Extra Life partner, met up with some old friends in game and on Skype, and had a lot of fun.

My Extra Life partner and I helped get another Extra Lifer from 32-44 first thing in the morning doing some missions and the Doc Q TF....he did make it to 50 later that day with the help of others.

Overall it was a good last day of play of CoH for me...and one which I will remember.

Friends are really trying to get me to go back to GW2...a lot of my globals migrated there - still not sure whether I will go or not.

I do know that my time at City of Heroes is done until November 30th when I go to watch the sun set.

Hi all,
@Ventus vis Vires here.  I basically teamed up the @OhContraire and piggybacked off of her Extra-Life page, as she's my senior citizen super-hero mom.  We weren't able to get as many donations from co-workers and personal friends as we wanted, but had a blast with the event anyway.  We actually ended up playing for 26 hours as we wanted to get to level 49.  We're glad to have done this event and will continue to stay members of the in game ExtraLife channel.  I chatted on the channel during the whole event (to a lesser extent so did mom, although which is a feat because she doesn't type and play as a rule), and I recognize several of you.  Even though we didn't get to team in game due to being on different servers we still consider you all part of our team.  We want to give a shout out to AFK Radio they helped up make the event even better and helped us out during the last few hours.  We'll be listening to your station more often :-)  Thanks to everybody who gave us support!

I teamed with Ventus vis Vires on Virtue. I also go to do a Hamidon raid. Great fun. Can't believe it's over.
