Title: Standing Vigil in game
Post by: The-Hunter-JLJ on September 10, 2012, 08:05:15 PM
Not everyone can do this, but just a thought to pass along. I've been leaving my spare computer logged in as often as I can, and parking one of my heroes on the steps of City Hall in Atlas Park. I prefer the symbolism of

/emote HoldTorch

I'm starting to notice a LOT of tells every day when I get home from work, apparently Winchester has been noticed and is drawing support. Kicking myself that I didn't think of this earlier. I added the following to his "uniform" for this duty:

/afk Vigil to help Save COH tinyurl.com/SaveParagon

That allows him to explain what is going on even if I am not at the keyboard, and also gives some gamers who seldom read forums or gaming websites a simple, easy to remember link to get here. I've got Protector covered, and can switch the same hero to any server except Exalted. Occurs to me it might be worth trying to get at least one hero standing on each server advertising via AFK by their silent presence.

Also worth mentioning that I have seen several other heroes stand vigil, too. The idea is definitely getting out there.

(edit to add  in the following from further down in the thread - a suggested "Vigil" macro")

/macro VIGIL "maxinactivefps 1$$e HoldTorch$$afk - Vigil to help Save COH - Titan.SaveCOH.com"

You can if you wish substitute any website you wish, I'd suggest whichever of the redirects from this thread catches your fancy. The dashes and spaces are there to get the AFK banner to break into two lines.

I'll start doing that as well, I can easily leave my desktop logged in while I'm off going through the motions of my day. I'll be on Guardian.

If you do that, type "/maxfps 1" before afking. It'll slow the rendering, thus consuming only minute amount of power to render the game.

Think green !

Even better:  /maxinactivefps (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/MaxInactiveFps_%28Slash_Command%29) 1.  That way you can tab out of the game to drop the FPS, and when you tab back in, it'll resume normal rendering.

There are 4 heroes on the steps in Protector, and the others all loved the AFK sign.

Ah ! good one. I knew there was a command line switch to make the game do that, but I should have searched more thoroughly.

And you can also cut the sounds of the game off, maybe it'll prevent the game from spending clicks on "rendering" the ambience.

So, the well equipped earth conscious hero should do something like this?

/macro VIGIL "maxinactivefps 1$$e HoldTorch$$afk - Vigil to help Save COH - Titan.SaveCOH.com"

Idea being to create a "button" I hit when I park him. After, of course, making a pilgrimage to AE to start up the mission which mentions NCsoft. (grin) Just seems appropriate.

edit to change web site to one of the redirects

Yeah, I decided to do this on Omega Mk. V on Protector, since I couldn't get to the Unity Rally.

"I stand for our City Of Heroes. #SaveCoH" is my AFK message.

Just wish there was a way to not autolog. :/

That was going to be my question - isn't the game set to kick you off after 30 minutes of inactivity?

How does one prevent that?

Two methods, same game mechanic.

1) Start a Task Force.

2) Start an Architect Entertainment mission.

As long as you're in a TF (AE storylines use the same mechanic as TFs), the game will not kick you for inactivity.

Awesome.

Now I don't need to constantly click the game! :D

I will now be a vigil on Protector each day. Look for me in game!

Omega Mk. V, executing program: Vigil.

Out.

If you have access to AE start an AE mish or an ouro flashback.  It'll put you in task force mode and not auto-log you :-D
I hope this helps

Edit: Didn't continue reading the thread as the question was already answered.

Word of caution: someone set off an area effect buff near me that tripped off my vigil. Check your game relatively frequently. :)

I can do this on Pinnacle, at least when I'm not actually playing. Or as long as my internet connection holds (it *does* have a tendency to flake out at least once a day).

Oh I forgot to say I too am doing this and have been pretty much all week.  Glad to see other like minded individuals.

I wonder if we really spread the word on this and there was ALWAYS a "mini" rally happening if it would help.....What do you guys think?

I made my afk message even shorter:

"Standing vigil: http://tiny.cc/SaveCoH" The URL links back to the Save Paragon City section of this forum.

Editing to add: Setting a TF didn't keep me from getting logged off. I think it's because I had the AFK set. I'm going to test without setting the message to see if there's a difference.

??? I've never seen that happen before, even with afk set. Is it possible someone ended your afk with an area buff, thus inadvertently ending your vigil?

I do believe that they changed the TF mechanic a while back so that if you are the only person on a TF, the TF will eventually boot you.  (SG member was trying to see if he could solo the ITF and ran into that.)  AE, on the other hand should allow you to stay on even if solo.
Title: Re: Standing Vigil in game
Post by: DashaBlade on September 11, 2012, 02:16:10 AM
I don't know if it's an area effect, but I tried it twice without setting AFK, and I got booted off even quicker - once within five minutes, again within ten. I'll try again in the morning with AE, though.

Weird thing is, I don't get kicked off the task - the mission from the TF stays the same - I just get poofed from the server. I still suspect that it's my wonky internet connection, which can sometimes go weeks or even months without issues, and then out of nowhere, it hiccups every 30 minutes. That's why I'll wait and test again in the morning. I played for hours this morning and my connection didn't even blink.

I find that starting an Ouro arc is the most reliable way to do it... but that's just me.

I have never tried the AE method.

I've been in for about four hours. I keep having to reset because of occasional AoE powers, though. Fortunately, the chat window is like a Unix-like command environment: up arrow recalls the last thing typed into it. :)

I've had very good luck with the AE method. Poor Winchester Webley II has been logged in almost continuously since Saturday morning. He's our SG's 'Butler Eternal', he exists on all servers except Exalted. I suppose I should fix that as a sign of hope, may have to do that tomorrow.

I was the only one standing vigil on Liberty server a while ago, so I switched to Virtue AP 33.   But I'll stick to it on Liberty and maybe people will join (or it's quite likely that I just hit the steps at a down time--it was rather late in the night/early in the morning).

Just set this up for my Wife's first 50 (Fiery Spirit) on Guardian server since she uses our desktop to play. (I ude the laptop, so it's not up all the time.) I put her sightly to the right side of the doors to minimize inadvertant AoEs, though intentional mucking about will still be an issue. Took a couple of screen shots, from one angle it looks like that crowd of civilians is part of the rally.   :)

Small addition: Since my wife's charactrer had no Discription/Back Story I put this in there just in case anyone checked her Info.

"I stand here, vigilant, for all those who call Paragon City home. Join with us to save this city and our community. The fight is not over until it is won or we draw our last breath and the hospital teleporters fail. We are heroes, this is what we do! http://tiny.cc/SaveCoH"

Just a thought for anyone who isn't nutty complete-ist about their characters (like I am) and has the empty space in the Discription box and is going to do this.

In case anyone has been wondering, aside from sending a message to anyone in the companies who can see the server stats or load in and poke around, the continued Vigil IS also creating awareness among the players, especially some who have probably just come back to the game due to news of the shutdown.

Eh, I'm an irascible old curmudgeon who attracts jerks. (You kids get off my lawn!!!) I'll admit I was rather surprised to attract them on my alt account nobody knows about when I wasn't even at the keyboard, but that's life. Rather they bother me than anyone else, I'm used to it. Ignore is my favorite feature of the game sometimes. (lol)

But it's only been 1 or 2 of them in many, many hours standing vigil since Saturday morning. One of them got more than he bargained for. There was this truly lovely chewing out on the screen when I came back from other players who'd been in the area, and 3 of them had joined my vigil as a result. He got kicked from his team, too. That was loads of fun to read when I checked up on our loyal butler.

Just doing a pass through the servers to see how the vigil is going. Taking screenshots whenever I see anyone. Also setting up one of my characters on each server to stand vigil.

Liberty - 0
Defiant - 0
Pinnacle - VV and 3 others (I waved and said hi)
Vigilance - 0
Champion - Madame Fantastic, no torch, afk, or sign, but pretty sure that is why she was there
Union - 0
Infinity - 0
Victory - Et Tu Brute? - looking fine with a torch and fire aura
Zukunft - 0
Triumph - 0
Guardian - Firey Spirt, Patri-bot, and Rularuu's Bane
Justice - 1 Ton Hammer

Freedom - 5 heroes - Madam Dark, Powder House, Creetsh, Mr Big Guy, Blue Yankee - more arrived as I was typing

Protector - 1 - Winchester Webley

Virtue - at least 9

Yes, when I am standing vigil, I'm usually the only one there (except once, yay!), but I only do it when I'm not playing the game and can leave the game running (not as much as I'd like at the moment because I've only got the laptop for the foreseeable future).  But I have had people broadcast or pm a response (they'll join me, they hadn't heard, etc.), so it's definitely worth doing.  To me, if only one player who didn't know about the shut down learns of it and signs the petition that's a win.

I am going to do another population check pass, just cuz I can. Figure it might get some healthy competition going between servers and encourage more to stand vigil. Tonight's census

Virtue AP33 - more than I can count
Triumph - 4
Vigilance - 0
Liberty -  0
Defiant - 0
Pinnacle - 4 - good solid crew there
Champion - 0
Union - 0
Infinity - 0
Victory - 0
Zukunft - 0
Guardian - 1
Justice - 1  (1 ton hammer, you're a great hero)
Freedom -  3
Protector - 1 - Winchester Webley

Virtue had a 20-strong vigil overnight.  My favorite was a level 1 clearly made for the event. SaveTheCatGirls, in requisite catgirl costume. I'm trying to figure out uploading a picture, but I would imagine she'll be there for a bit.  :)

Also, the variations on "Ensign Redshirt," a group of characters dressed like red Wolf Spiders is now up to five members.

Put my main on Pinnacle's steps. I might switch it out for my CCCP hero, but we'll see.

It's worth noting that you can stand vigil on the main servers, and log in to Beta at the same time. I am the same character on both right now, and it is awesome (although slightly schizophrenic). So that's good for anyone who wants to save the city, and play in it too!

It's that time again, see how your server's Vigils are doing.

Virtue AP33 - at least 25
Triumph - 1
Vigilance - 0
Liberty -  1 (one of mine, tho)
Defiant - 0
Pinnacle - 5
Champion - 9
Union - 0
Infinity - 0
Victory - 0
Zukunft - 0
Guardian - 3

Can't say enough how wonderful the devs are :) After being griefed for about two hours by a guy who was in a TF so he couldn't be logged off and had SB on auto, a Dev rescued us with several giant monsters. The invisible dev then awarded us with a dance party :)

Hmmmn. I created a couple of F2P accounts, and determined that my spare machine can handle 3 instances of the client easily. Figured I could park a couple of heroes standing vigil in the lower population servers so they get some attention, too. Problem I have is that a F2P account can't easily get access to AE or another way of getting into TF mode. Any suggestions?

What if you teamed with someone or your main character who was on a TF / AE / Ouro mission?

Someone suggested that in-game, and it works. I was afraid it would drop me out of AE mode when I logged off my main account, but it doesn't. So my next experiment is going to be to see if I can point more than one F2P account at the same email account.

(grin) I'm up to 3 instances now, going to create accounts and see how many I can get running concurrently. Here's the current census

Virtue AP33 - at least 30
Triumph - 4
Vigilance - 1 merci!
Liberty -  1
Defiant - 0
Pinnacle - 4
Champion - 5
Union - 0
Infinity - 1
Victory - 1
Zukunft - 0
Guardian - 5
Justice - 5
Freedom -  8
Protector - 2

(drat - 3 instances seems to be the limit on that box. Have to try cutting the graphics and stuff way down, that should help)

Holy CRAP! Now I understand why my wife set us up on Infinity way back when she brought me into this game. I cannot believe all the negative jerks in here. It is ongoing. I never thought I would hear this sort of thing in CoH. I certainly hope nobody logs in to do a 'report' on the vigil and record some of the latest broadcasts :(

Just wow.

Virtue's AP1 has had a good number of heroes standing vigil most of the week. I'm hoping there are enough to keep a strong vigil on AP33 and AP1 both.

Also, hi everyone! 7 year vet. Tonyv and Titan Network have been awesome since our crisis hit. Thank you guys for leading the charge to save our City!

It would have been much easier just to give up. But, that's not what heroes do!

I am one of you forever, heroes of Paragon!  :)

@Too Good here, just dropping by to let you know I've answered the call to come back in support of the game.

I had previously uninstalled the client when the news struck.. I was simply too depressed to play anymore. I see now that if I do nothing, I let this happen. Me and the wife stood in vigil all last night in AP 33 (Apothesis and Marin Avarix). I will continue to do so unless I'm needed elsewhere.

I'm here to help in any way I can.

I started checking AP1 in addition to AP33. I always knew there were heroes standing vigil there, was just saving myself one extra zone load.

The numbers of people standing vigil is I think slowly trending upward. I can see some pretty clear examples of a server where one heroes resolutely standing out there for days on end is slowly drawing attention and recruiting additional people.

The raw numbers do not tell the whole story. On several of these servers, I've seen the same person standing there now for several days running, and now he's got people with him. That is one reason I created 3 more accounts and am parking them in low population servers.

Another thing that is not obvious from these numbers is how much impact even a spontaneous event on the server has on the number of people standing vigil. Any time someone calls out that they are doing a flash mob or a CC over the SaveCOH channel, I pop over to join in. Since most of my toons are now parked in AP for Vigil duty if I am not actively playing them, I always get a glance at the vigil action both on arrival and when I relog to someone else. There is ALWAYS a bigger crowd for a while after any SaveCOH event that generates a lot of chat on a server.

Oh yes, another observation worth editing in. I am seeing more and more people use some variant of the idea of putting up an explanation of what they are doing using /afk. Most of them say simply "save our City of Heroes" or something along those lines. Only a few so far are including a link, but that idea seems to be spreading, too. I need to swing by the official forums and suggest people go AFK rather than logout if they can spare the computer to do so.

Here's a link to a consolidated table of the numbers I've gathered. Will try to swing through all servers once a day and keep this updated.

My Wife "Fiery Spirit" and I (As both Drew Blue and Patri-bot at various times) have been on the City Hall Steps on Guardian for the better part of a week. These were our first 50s on our first server. Should we move over by you guys or stay where we are?

I didn't even realize there was another group on vigil, to be honest. I just signed-on the server to set us up and then moved on to do my characters on other servers. I was afraid that being so close to Ms. Liberty there would be a lot of AoE Powers taking you out of AFK. We can't check on our characters very often.

My wife got one invite in the 5 days we've been on 24/7 (Minus play time) and we both have gotten many "Keep it up" and "Good job!" tells. No bad tells at all, but I think someone might have pushed me (As Drew) off the ledge at some point during the night, because I was in the middle of the stairs the next morning.

I put us off to the side by the Eternal Fire for the same reason I mentioned for not being too close to Ms. Liberty, fear of AoE buffs as people exit City Hall.

I got knocked off the ledge near the stairs because I wanted the fire pit between me and the ice armor buffs. But in my case, it was pink imps who were running laps around the city hall trying to get back to their owner who was flying above everything... also trying to stay away from the ice armor buffs.

Completely agreed, though I tend to do it differently in there. I go up on the big central platform, and change my message to read "Dancing to Save COH - Titan.SaveCOH.com". People go to Pocket D to have fun, may as well fit in.

You should be able to create a non-Praetorian character, run through the tutorial, and make a decision whether to follow the path of a hero or a villain at the end of the tutorial.  The new tutorial replaced Outbreak and Breakout, but you can still play low-level CoV.

Ah, OK.. well hopefully that's the case. Seems a shame that you can pick between CoH and Rogue, but CoV doesn't show up on the list of starting points. And like I said before about Fort Darwin, Kalinda wasn't even around the last time I went over there, which made sense for why the place was so empty. I'll have to finish the tutorial and see what happens.

I want to make special mention of an idea someone else developed up-thread. I've seen a couple of people who have created characters with names like Save COH or SaveCOH Info specifically for vigils. They use the character description to give detailed information. This is a fantastic idea, and I like to hope quite effective at getting the word out there.

I also want to specifically thank the faithful who I see every time I log around and record these numbers. You know who you are, and you have my thanks.

An eye-catching costume probably doesn't hurt, if you're going to build one. Careful how you define "eye catching," though. It might not get the attention we want if it's a bondage raver with rainbow butterfly wings.

Keep me on count for roster on Champion. I know Atlas Park 33 is where all the 'cool kids' go, but Champion is my home, so I stand there when I'm not actively playing. Have been since this started.

So always, on Champ, count me in.

My wife also suggested replacing character history with links to follow for those interested, and why you're standing there. If someone could make a list for me, I'll gladly replace mine with it. Info is flying so fast, and I'm old (by most gaming standards) so I miss a lot of it :)

I'm going to continue this 'til the end, but with Zwill and Posi's posts tonight, my heart has finally broken. I was never an optimist; nothing in my life ever gave me a reason to be, but I'll always hold a torch for a fallen friend, and City of Heroes is far from my first. Hell I've done it all my life... and won't stop now.

I really am running into a lot of players who just plain don't know that CoH is being shut down. Which goes to prove just how little attention anyone pays to the launcher. It does argue that getting as many representatives out to spread the word as possible is not a bad plan.

Likewise- I'm one of thee Triumph regulars, and periodically find someone who did not know about it.

Although one time it turned out they were role-playing that their *character* didn't know, which was confusing all around.

For a brief moment I toyed with the idea of going "Paragon City is OURS to destroy!", but decided it was a little bad taste. I went with a more neutral "CoH belongs to US" slogan instead.

Are you sure?  I see four.  Do I need to move to make my two easier to see?
[img]http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y38/eabrace/titan/th_vigil_zps6964b3b6.jpg[img] (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y38/eabrace/titan/vigil_zps6964b3b6.jpg)

Well, no, when you get right down to it, I'm not at all sure.  :o My vague memory is that you are the two that I noticed. There are definitely people I remember - 1 Ton Hammer, for instance, has been there I believe every time I have checked.

The author of these surveys makes no promises of their accuracy. He is dependent on the data provided by his field crew, the 15 heroes who actually risk their lives and go check the live servers. They log on, spin around, and sometimes if I remember jump up to where you are standing in addition to checking the steps. Unless I get distracted by a hot looking hero. Or a tell. Or trying to figure out if someone standing there is just standing there or standing vigil. Or someone says something in SaveCOH channel. Or the phone rings.

Ignoring entirely the distraction factor, whether I see you is heavily influenced by when I have/make time to relog around looking for people. NCsoft has been making my life difficult with all these extra maintenance events. As a complete aside, one computer professional to another, just what the hell do these guys in the MMO industry DO with that much time for a maintenance event? I've built entire server rooms in less time than they get for maintenance events. Maintenance windows in my industry are measured in minutes and seconds per month, not hours per week. SHeesh, nice work if you can get it I guess. But I digress.

I look at the figures I am recording as a minimum, and have no illusions I'm seeing everyone who is there. The main reason I see the numbers as worth posting in the forum here (besides some recognition for the people contributing their time) is to give people a guide to which servers need more coverage. This becomes especially apparent if you look at the spreadsheet I linked somewhere above, and should again

Vigil sampling spreadsheet  (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnJyUcNZYr_EdEx2VVgtbkdDYjJUNFRWbmxTT0tZdkE#gid=0)

All times given are whatever time zone this forum is running taken from the forum post, which I consider my official record. The spreadsheet is simply a handy compilation.

Notice that there are servers which almost never have  anyone standing vigil. What I usually do is run around and do my survey as quickly as I can manage, then park a few of my own heroes in the gaping holes in that night's coverage. Verizon wireless has been pretty shoddy the past few days, and I keep getting them all dumped while I'm asleep, but at least there's somebody there for a while.

This has been bothering me, too.  Someone posted a week or so ago that the servers were scattered around the Paragon offices, under desks and whatnot.  Not saying the maintenance schedule lends credence to that, but I have spent LONG minutes waiting for a server to come back up that I had rebooted remotely, early on a Sunday morning, panicked visions of having to be at the front door of the client's office when he got in Monday morning.

I don't miss those days...

The funnything is that I am so Villain focused that it really hard for me to change servers, I could Hero over to Guardian where most of my heroes are but, I do like my virtue it just there is only one hero there.

My other Stuck in Free mode account all the heroes are locked and I can't unlock.

So I am hanging in the Pocket D, dancing away.

Yeah, and I have not been surveying Pocket D, either. Only so much time in the day. If someone else wanted to start putting up numbers in this thread, it wouldn't hurt. I could easily add a sheet, or add in a field to say who reported each number. Maybe do that as a comment on the spreadsheet. Anyway, if anyone else wants to report numbers, go nuts.

Not that I'm aware of, however the catgirls may wish to represent too  :P

Buy those girls a catnip julep, they'll help out. (grin)

I don't know if that's a good idea. The rating on the game may have to be changed.

Oh, note for anyone following this. I will not be doing a census tonight, have to go in to work. If someone wants to run around and collect the numbers to post here that would be grand.

I would, but I don't have enough global slots.  I have Guardian and Virtue unlocked, and that's about it.

I'm back up (and alone) on Protector.  Let's hope my local electrical utility can keep the power on overnight.

Sorry! I would have been there, but work has been busy!

I'd keep my computer on, but I like to save power. :/

Can people who have never played before still create free to play accounts, and play the game?

Because I had this whole idea, but a lot of it would hinge on that, so ... yeah, could new people start playing, now?

I'd guess not?

At the end of the day, there are rarely people in AP on Champion, so that's where I've been setting up my PB every night. Encouragingly, in the morning, there are usually a few more standing with me. =)

OK, I'll spare you the sob story, but suffice to say my local utility appears to have finally gotten the power issue figured out.  Let's just say a municipal road crew found a way to do real harm to the power distribution in an entire neighborhood.

Power hasn't gone out for about 24 hours, so I'm confident in my ability to be back up this afternoon, because, honestly, I was about to go log in from a coffee shop and delete my SaveCoH Informant character so someone with reliable power could take it over. :)

Keep up the good work, gang. About all I've had time for lately is making sure the old laptop has a vigil character logged in whenever I pass it. I'll be back at stately Hunter manor this weekend, and the desktop there can handle multiple instances, so I'll try to fill in a bit where I can.

Since the "announcement" from NCSoft today, I have seen our vigil on Guardian nearly double.

That announcement has only steeled our resolve.

I'm the only one on Protector. I never learned how to see how many other players were on the server without searching with the Team interface, which I can't do while in an AE TF. Aside from the occasional whisper of encouragement, or the rarer whisper of "why are you bothering," I have to wonder if there's even anyone else on Protector, anymore

Actually, after posting that, I started to see some chatter on the Looking For Group channel of people actually looking for a group. I'd rather see that.  One 8 foot tall Statesman clone holding a torch is more than enough, if everyone else on the server is actually playing.  I'd be playing, too, if I didn't have work that I should be doing.

If you're in to play, by all means, play. I should be working on a project for school, instead of lurking and posting here. Otherwise, I would be playing. But, Rider, thank you for your support.  Now, go. Play. Do the things you wold normally do in the game.
