Reading the comments on the addicting info website, Ammons John's wrote in the comments section:
And that negative experience of NCsoft extends through to their shareholders, most especially Nexon, who it appears gained their now largest shareholding by buying shares directly from the CEO in June, presumably to increase their voting stock while simultaneously reducing the shareholding (and voting power) of NCsoft's own CEO. It certainly explains the sudden and completely unexpected "realignment of company focus".
What if we, the players, were major share holders? Could we form something like say, "The Paragon Group" (or perhaps call ourselves Crey...) and purchase stock that way? In effect a '401K' for investment in our game. This would give us 'political' clout with the company.
Any thoughts?

Not a bad idea at all...especially if we have some financial advisors and/or wizards in our playerbase. :)

It's not a bad thought, but it's a serious investment to even get something in the neighborhood of 5% of the outstanding shares. NCSoft has about 21.89 million outstanding shares valued at about $236 a share. Five percent works out to about $258 million. If we could raise that much in order to purchase stock in NCSoft, I'd much rather suggest we use that to purchase the IP away from them and/or create a wholly independent game development studio to create a bigger and better City of Heroes.

o.o your talking a kinda crazy amount of cash for that.. not to mention all the legal rigamarol to set up an organization that can even have shares.. its easy for a person to own stock, but when a business, non-profit or not, does, there's a lot of red tape to add to ones collection
-
Sure, if we had a few billionaires who were willing to help, then the course of action would be easy:
1) Buy up a controlling interest of NCSoft
2) Spin off the development studios as independent entities (and retain stock in them so you'd eventually get your money back)
3) Shut down the parent company as part of, oh, I don't know, a change of focus.
;-)

The kind of money we're talking about would be larger than the budget spend on SWTOR, the most expensive game ever made - it's simply not an option for us.

Nah, we only need 10%, maybe 20% actual capital and a great big loan for the rest of the cost of the buyout. That's how venture capitalists do it, right? We could do that in our sleep!

I hear there's this company called Bain Capital. Anyone have their number?

o.o its (617)516-2000 for the boston branch, (212)326-9420 for New York. We're a bit under their price range though.. perhaps you where thinking of Bain Capital Ventures?
<.< also, for those who don't know the other company involved in the NCsoft situation: Nexon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexon). They're also a South Korean company, though now based in Tokyo Japan. Possibly best known for Maple Story and they're involvement with Eve Online.

That. We should do that. We should get a kickstarter and do that. Dibs on "Head Writer" position! :P

Right now, that's Plan Z - if we're left with nothing else, of NCSoft refuse to budge an ince on their current plan and then refuse to give up any part of the game, then we're going to start from scratch - but with an IP that's as close as possible to CoH.
I've been doing soem work on an IP framework, but it's just an outline - and I want it to stay that way, because making a new spiritual successor to CoH really is the last resort - but at the same time, I think that we need to be prepared for every possible outcome.

I too had thoughts along these lines. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.
