Title: Supergirl Season 3
Post by: Mandu on November 07, 2017, 12:02:48 PM
I'm not starting this to discuss the previous episodes this season (although we of course can and the Alex thing was predictable from the start considering this is the CW) but to talk about a future episode.  Episode 8 is the  "Crisis on Earth-X" crossover, episode 9 doesn't have a title release yet.  And episode 10 is titled Legion of Super Heroes.

It's about damn time.  They have been teasing this since Flash season 2.

Finally! I kind of liked the few Legion stories they did in Smallville. I guess here they could do a more full blown version with more powered people.

I haven't really watched Supergirl except for the crossovers, but will definitely watch the Legion one.

Episode 9's title is "Reign", so it seems likely that the Legion will be showing up to help with the Reign problem.

It'll be interesting to see if my axiom from the comics "there's nothing so lame that the Legion showing up can't make it worse" will hold up in this show. Their Smallville appearance wasn't any better or worse than the typical ep of that.

Well for the most part - Smallville went out of its way to be non-superhero.

These new shows are very comic book oriented so I am hoping for a much better Legion then Smallville.

So far they have confirmed Braniac 5 and Saturn Girl.  That makes sense I suppose since they are two legion members who require zero special effects budget.

I want to see Bouncing Boy but we will probably get Cosmic Boy and Chameleon Boy.

Or maybe Scott Bakula as Oh Boy.

Be interesting to see how Braniac 5 explains how after a millennium of technological advance he's somehow devolved 3 generations from Indigo. Though I suppose given how often tech and app updates are a step backwards i could easily see it.

I laughed pretty hard at that.  Well played.

They kept adding new features, but they never upgraded the platform hardware.

Personally, I'd like to see Karate Kid and Matter-Eater Lad.

Given the CW's raging thirst for relationship drama, I wonder if they'll be able to resist the temptation to use Mon-El's time jump to add some shenanigans to his reunion with Kara?

Well, apparently Chloe and her Wall of Weird are canon in this universe.  Did not see that coming.

The casting for young Kara and Alex was ridiculously on point - and they both managed to mimic their adult version's body language and speech intonations without seeming forced or coming off as just doing an impression.

Well, apparently Chloe and her Wall of Weird are canon in this universe.  Did not see that coming.

And yet no Kryptonite based villains around.

I get that they wanted to give Erica Durance a job (so much so that they'd retcon her into being Kara's mother) but that appearance really makes J'onn into quite a prick. Let's grab a memory of a teen girl's dead mother out of her mind and use it to manipulate her. I suppose discussing the issue reasonably was out of the question?

IMO, we already knew J'onn was a major prick that only started to soften halfway thru S1.

Well, that's because he was intended to be the real Hank Henshaw in the pilot - they only decided to turn him into Martian Manhunter afterwards.

I'm quoting myself as going by the preview clip/photos, they do seem to be going with this angle - as in the 6 months or so of separation that Kara's gone though in the present has been much longer for Mon-El in the future, and he may be in a new relationship.

Wow.  A worthless episode that was a bit like Arrow and Riverdale...

Any slight change of pace from the usual formula is welcome in my book so the nancy drew episode was the least nauseating this season for me.

re the relationship drama - if they had the budget i'm sure the plot would be something like brainy and the legion visit, kara and brainy flirt, kara gets legion ring, kara visits future, kara is woken up in brainy's bed when he gets an alert which turns out to be mon-el's arrival. but given that too much 31st century's probably not in the cgi budget the mon-el relationship angle seems likely.

I think that they might be going more with Mon-El and Saturn Girl as an item/married.

There's just no way I would react to discovering I was nigh invulnerable as if it was something awful and scary...  that is the opposite direction my freak out would go.

But then you'd miss out on your big chance to show off your soap opera acting skills.

I have always hated the "I just want to be normal" trope.

Power is involuntarily dangerous to others (ie Rogue) or mutates you horribly (Jokers in the Wild Cards series) then yeah, get rid of it.  Otherwise every real person in the world would be happy getting powers.
Title: Re: Supergirl Season 3
Post by: Golden Girl on November 23, 2017, 10:03:33 PM
Sam didn't want to be normal once she found out that she had powers, and she wasn't afraid of having them either - as soon as she found out she told Ruby that "something wonderful is happening", and  followed the pod crystal out into the desert to find out more. She was convinced that she was going to be a hero the same as Supergirl, right up until the Evil Kryptonian Cult Lady did her whole "they-will-call-you-Worldkiller-you-will crush-your-enemies-without-mercy-and-burn-the-world-of-men-your-daughter-was-a-mistake-and-you'll-forget-her" thing, which was the point where Sam started to freak out about having powers.

She totally did a there's-something-wrong-with-me-WHY-fake-mom? freak out.  Completely with useless crying.  As it turned out, she might have been better off not freaking out and looking for the "why".

For some reason, I'm getting a Smallville season of the witch vibe from this Reign nonsense.
Title: Re: Supergirl Season 3
Post by: Mandu on November 24, 2017, 03:01:41 AM
The point is that she did freak out at first.  She yelled at her daughter for suggesting she was strong.  She sent her daughter off and went running to her mom when she discovered she was invulnerable.  She freaked out and hesitated on her trip to the desert. It wasn't until she found out she was from Krypton that she was cool with her powers and that was undoubtedly because the only Kryptonians she knows are Supergirl and Superman.

Molly from Runaways had a much more human action.  Rush home and test the powers at the first chance. Get frustrated because they aren't working. Then get thrilled when they do work.

Best wedding ever!

I like the feel of this year's crossover.  One story in four chapters is a huge improvement over four stories with a common element.

Having the Greatest American Hero as your priest is pretty cool.  If he returned as Uncle Sam, however, that would be truly awesome.

The opening montage of crime-fighting/wedding discussions totally nailed the feeling of huge interlocking superhero community that's at the heart of the DC and Marvel universes.

Now THAT's how you do a crossover story!

Not like the last 30 seconds like the Dominator one.

This would have been a better film than the JLA and its only half over.

Too bad about the priest - should have been wearing his magic jammies.

And all four episodes certainly didn't cost $300 million.

I THOUGHT he looked like some other hero. He would be perfect.

But as said in another poet - should have been wearing the magic longjohns, then he wouldn't have gotten zapped.

Though I think he lasted longer then the part he had in Heroes.

The quality of writing in this season was really poor at times until they did the episode with kara and alexs childhood. Now it's starting to get back to being a show about a superhero and not trying to tie in current real life politics, or references to it in every little scene. I am hoping they decide to make alex an important character again in the future as they basically changed her from being the bad ass strong human that killed a kryptonian with a kryptonite machette into nothing but a love sick idiot and a "hey look we have a lesbian romance couple in our series." She was a great supporting character for supergirl and a powerhouse on her own for a human but they've only been using her for romance stuff now and that's really sad.

Now I see James is about to get into another romance and I hope they don't end guardian for that and likewise don't end the martian manhunters usefulness for only having him talk with his father.

Y'know even if they're going to go with the terrible Star Trek makeup look for Brainy you'd think they could at least get the head jewel thingies symmetrical.
Title: Re: Supergirl Season 3

I thought Brainy was great.  Didn't stare hard enough at the jewels to detect any aberrant asymmetry.

That's me all over. 2.3x and spotting asymmetrical jewels and selina's leg hair in that one gotham but wouldn't remember the plot 5 minutes later if i watched it three times at normal speed.

I like that they changed Saturn Girl's power set to telekinesis so there wouldn't be two telepaths fighting Reign without it occurring to them to use a mental attack.

Putting aside the silliness of radiation that's only poisonous to men, aren't Kryptonians *more* powerful around blue suns?

Putting aside the silliness of radiation that's only poisonous to men, aren't Kryptonians *more* powerful around blue suns?

In the comics I think that's how it worked.

Because it was hotter or something then a yellow sun.

Loving seeing the Legion - all three of them.

I don't watch Supergirl unless its a crossover - the guy in the beard is Mon-El? And he married Saturn Girl? Taking lots of liberties I see with Legion lore.

I know he landed on Earth but how did he get to the future? And what episode did the Legion show up? I started watching from ep 10.

1. He landed on Earth and fell in love with Kara.
2. His parents came and his mom invaded Earth.
3. Lead bomb to drive off the Daxamites.
4. He left Earth and wound up going through time to the 30th century. He was given a cure to the lead thing during the years he lived there and married Saturn Girl.
5. Somethingsomething and the Legion traveled way into the past. They were asleep for centuries under the ground until now.

Yes, liberties.

So um, where was the original Kara's body when she went back in time? I'd be willing to give them no flashpoint since she only went back a few minutes and
Spoiler for Hidden:
Reign can one-shot Kryptonians cuz magic!
but y'know, there are limits even for routinely ridiculous shows. Now we have an entirely new time metaphysics from the 15 they've already used in these shows where
Spoiler for Hidden:
time remnants become smoke monsters instead of bodies, which then evidently become bodies again, but without their memories since I assume they're going to do some version of (formerly) Red Daughter?
