Title: The Orville
Post by: Kaos Arcanna on September 29, 2017, 02:09:19 AM
I'm surprised at how much I am enjoying this show. The humor is hit and miss-- sometimes they go WAY too overboard, but there's a kind of earnestness about it that makes me want to see this show succeed.

It's turning into a decent pastiche of Star Trek.

As I posted in the Discovery thread, but which is more on topic here:

Yeah, The Orville has been surprisingly good.  I was expecting it to just be zany, irreverent nonsense, but it takes itself more seriously than I was expecting.  In fact, the humour is largely kinda flat, forced, and has a sort of contractually obligated feel to it.  But when it's not forcing the humour, it feels somewhere between TOS and TNG.

I couldn't get it off my watchlist fast enough, but then I hate Star Trek and was only looking for 'zany, irreverent nonsense'. Glad it appealed to ST fans. Wondering if it will last without NFL lead-ins. Seemed bigger budget than I expected and it's not as if Gotham is any kind of lead-in

I would expect Gotham to be a better lead-in than football. Almost the same fanbase. But sports is usually enough to keep me away from a channel.

They have to know that the long-term return on this series is going to fantastic, it's beautiful and it's really good Start Trek -- with odd dashes of Seth McFarland esthetic.  I think this will fly long enough for several collectable seasons just for the direct sales.

And this is where I share a resource.

TV By The Numbers.  It's both informative and educational!  Their Renew/Cancel Index (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/category/renewcancel/) posts use the semi-public Nielsen Rating numbers sold to advertisers, media companies, and marketing agencies to try to guess at Nielsen's most elusive metric, the fabled "C30" ratings (viewership of ads per 30 minute segment of Television) that most of the broadcast networks in the United States use to either cancel or renew a show.  The C30 ratings are an industry secret and are NEVER shared with the public, as that Nielsen product goes directly to TV Executives.  The posts with the Cancellation Bear show programs that are considered "Dead Man Walking" to the advertisers with a small enough audience that the networks might pull the program from the air before it's over.

The educational part involves articles such as The Third Season Rule (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/renewcancel/return-of-the-cancel-bear-the-third-season-rule-and-certain-renewals-for-2018-19/), which explains that a show that is close to 100 episodes and middling ratings may get renewed for a fourth season anyway to try to package and sell the show to Syndication groups, or at the 88-episode mark for 'stripped' syndication conditional that another season is actively in production to make the 100 episodes before the deal is approved.  (For 'limited series' type of shows that make less than 22 episodes available in a TV Season.)  TV By The Numbers only tracks broadcast TV approvals: Cable works by a different metric which makes predictions impossible (On Cable, often critical response to a show may buck ratings and keep a show on the air.  For broadcast TV, it rarely works.)

Concerning shows you're a fan of, this site should be helpful in tracking programs like The Orville's progress through the first year.

Oh, yeah, forgot my point...

When TV By The Numbers writes an article singling out a TV Show, it's either a horrendous moment, or in The Orville's case, pretty damn good (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/dvr-ratings/broadcast-live-7-ratings-for-sept-11-17-2017/).

Nielson numbers are meaningless any more.  They have finally expanded to the week of in addition to the night of but that's still not enough.  There are just too many people including me who put off watching a show for weeks at a time.  Sometimes I'll watch a show every week but often I'll wait till I have two or three episodes backlogged and then watch them.  According to Nielson even if they are looking at the Hulu numbers that means I'm not counted as watching episodes 1 and 2.  I only watched 3.  This week I won't be watching any of the shows (except Gotham which I already watched) because I'll be watching GoT and Wonder Woman and possibly John Wick 2.  Which means that so far as ratings go that means I only watched episode 3 of The Orville and then gave up on the show.

Some day studios will realize that and count view numbers for the whole season plus purchase of the shows in digital and physical form.  And when that day comes Manuel will be right because pigs will be flying.

Like it or hate it, it's still what advertisers base their spending upon.  If an advertiser doesn't have a large enough audience to watch their ads, they pull their funding.  There is no way to get the public opinion on a show 100% right, whether through advertising audience analysis, or cash sales when a season is through, or both.  From 10 years ago when Nielsen cried fowl against DVR viewing and online watching, they have adapted to the changes in the industry.

And there are more invasive viewing metrics being established other than Nielsen's "journaled TV" approach.  (Ever install DirecTV Now on your phone?  Your physical location has to be on and at High Accuracy mode to even watch TV on a mobile device.  Yes, that data is collected for analytics.)

But this is about The Orville, so I'll stop there.  My point was the show looks safe from cancellation at the moment.

Ever install DirecTV Now on your phone?  Your physical location has to be on and at High Accuracy mode to even watch TV on a mobile device.  Yes, that data is collected for analytics.

It's never made me do that. All it requires is a "WiFi bridge" that connects your DVR to your internet. Maybe that's how they get their data. *shrug*

Did you notice that Yaphit (the blob) extended his "hand" to Phia to shake "hands" from the same place he had extended his other "appendage" towards the doctor in a previous episode?

That "Mr. Potato Head" gag was great.
Imagine Mr. Data in the same sort of situation.

I wondered if that was the case, but didn't still have the other episode on the DVR to go back and check.

I've read that Yaphit is expensive to do as CGI, so perhaps the initial extension from the previous episode was reused and they added to it for this episode.

It's good they are fleshing the Krill out a little.

It might've been a good episode if it wasn't so awkward and painful to watch...

Their undercover antics were cringe worthy, but as pointed out by posters in reddit, those two are not trained undercover operatives and probably quite nervous.  So I'll give them some slack.  As far as why their odd behavior was accepted by the Krill was that the Krill did not know of the deception, but we did.  People can act oddly, even Krill.

At least there was no "open this jar of pickles" line in this episode.  I don't mind it as a running gag, but not in every episode.

I liked the female Krill teacher.  Kirk, I mean Ed, blew his chance to have sex with an alien "babe".    :D

I also liked the Krill leader and priest.  I wasn't too crazy about the "space vampire" thing, since I hate the concept, but that's me.

I think it is the best Trek I have seen since STNG (although I did like the first reboot movie).

I look forward to the next episode just like I did for STNG.

Interesting video posted by Marc Zicree who wrote on TNG and DS9.  He discusses The Orville and Discovery.  Brief mention at the beginning of some of the people that are working on each show that also worked on Star Trek and some discussion of how each of the shows compares to their predecessors.  Even a mention of Babylon 5 when he talks about the cost of producing an episode of Discovery.

I agree with his take on the shows, and I find The Orville more appealing then Discovery. It's like they took Roddenberry's vision of the future and just threw it away. I have to wonder if Majel was still alive, would she have made some noise about this? I honestly enjoy The Orville much more. To me it's Star Trek, without being Star Trek in name.

Star Trek, has always been a bit preachy.  "We must obey the prime directive" non-sense.

Orville, feels more human.
Like imagine you get your first command.
And your ex-wife is your executive office.
"You have the bridge, number one, and half my stuff."

And their enemy, The Krill, perfect enemy type.
Star Trek kept making friends with their enemies.

But at times, it feels a little like "Family Guy".

Larry and I just started watching The Orville.

I absolutely adore it.

I'm old enough to have seen STO first run.  The Orville is STO, if STO had been written with modern effects, by modern writers.  Every episode is a love letter to STO.  And I am absolutely astounded at how good Seth MacFarlane is as the captain.

I was kind of meh with it.  I get what they were aiming for, but so many plot holes.

So you're stuck with the votes your entire life?   They could have kept John got a few minutes and waited to get those last X down votes.  Evidently up votes don't counter down votes.

Wouldn't the officials have found out about his counterfeit badge counters?  They didn't bother to check his identity and found him to be not in the system?

Watched the first episode of the show. It was pretty good with a couple of jokes thrown in.  I'm surprised to see an hourlong comedy. That's pretty unusual.

I like the characters and how they're poking fun at what's going on.  I agree that it's being done with love and respect for the original material. I'll be watching more episodes. :)

Right.  This is obviously meant to be a near perfect homage to TOS. The jokes are in there to maintain its status as a parody because as a parody they can mimic the look and feel of the original.  If the jokes weren't there they would be shut down in an instant because they are too close to being a copy.

It's not close enough to Star Trek that it would be shut down. The only thing about Trek IP that's protectable are its setting-specific, copyrighted, and trademarked names and likenesses, and The Orville doesn't come within a lightyear of any of them.

Still, the only thing that's made me even chuckle through the whole series was cutting off Gordon's leg in ep 5. And I like it that way.

Latest episode was a really good story. More Isaac, please.

But really, more John LaMarr. There really has been almost no development there.

I think of it more as a homage to Star Trek TNG, borrowing a lot but stealing nothing. I will give a bow to Seth for the huge brass balls it took just to pitch something so unorthodox and wildly ambitious. Bet he had to call in every marker he had to get this going. I'm gonna give it time to see how it does, but so far I'm really impressed... and entertained... and even at times awed.

We don't even know if Gordon was being sincere.

And frankly, every time someone from Earth chats with someone in space they're giving their location away. It makes keeping it secret almost impossible.

Still catching up.  Just say Majority Rule, but didn't like it as much as some of the others. I think it was hitting a little too close to reality with the up/down vote buttons.  I suppose the old Star Trek series made some people uncomfortable back in the 1960s when covering certain topics, too.  I only ever saw it in re-runs as a kid, so I really didn't get the morality plays they were going for.

One more episode this season.

I am pretty happy with the way the show has come along.  I don't know if the humor is getting better-- sometimes it seems like the most unrealistic thing of all that people who do stunts like we see tonight are able to continue to serve on a starship-- but in general I'm glad it gets another season. I do hope we learn something more about the Union though-- pastiches are fine and dandy, but ideally the Orville's future should have some outstanding features of its own other than a lack of transporters. :D

I love the show, but sometimes I feel like it was like a light snack.  Perhaps because many of the episodes are a combined variant of 1-3 previous Star Trek shows so I've seen it all before?  I'm glad they're getting another season, but I hope there will be some new stories (yeah yeah, there are no NEW stories any more).

And show more Kelly.  :)

I found the finale too cliched and it really brought Kelly down. She's usually the mature one, but she was a huge calamity throughout this one.

The only thing good about this episode was Ed not realizing the admiral was still on the screen.

Overall, the show is really just "meh" for me. I hope for a drastic improvement next year, else I won't bother with a third season.

On the bright side, you don't have to subscribe to CBS All Access to see the Orville.   Thus making it better than the new Star Trek show.
