Title: My CoX characters, costumes and builds
Post by: wyldhunt on April 29, 2014, 06:30:35 PM
In support of Ironwolf's communications in the "New Efforts" thread as well as the successor projects, I figured it is time to share my own City of Heroes characters. First up is The Amber Fist, who was my oldest active at the time of shutdown. He is an Electric Armor/Stone Melee Tanker, and a Primal Earth hero.

He was created thusly: a scientist was performing some experiments regarding amber electrical properties when some Circle of Thorns broke in, seeking to use his body as a host for their corrupt spirits. Unfortunately, they succeeded. However, due to the nature of their magic and the expiremental equipment, some nearby amber picked up a fragment of the scientist's soul, slowly mutating and growing into a semblance of the scientist himself. This fragment has called itself "The Amber Fist" and has joined the heroes of Paragon in their various quests.

At first, The Amber Fist was quite shy about his natural appearance, and wanted to fit in with the more human-looking heroes, as this costume shows:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/AmberFist1.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/AmberFist1.jpg.html)

However, as the people of Paragon City began to know and trust him, he grew a little more comfortable in his own skin:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/AmberFist2.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/AmberFist2.jpg.html)

Around the time The Amber Fist took on Crey Corporation, he received some advice and determined for a more coordinated look:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/AmberFist3.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/AmberFist3.jpg.html)

However, when taking on the Praetorians in leagues of heroes, he needed something to help him be seen and stand out [note: I played large map iTrials zoomed out max, so yes I wanted this for myself]. So only for these interventions, he altered his body structure and looked like this:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/AmberFist4.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/AmberFist4.jpg.html)

It was always fun to play The Amber Fist, in TFs and iTrials, and in normal content. I did not fear Malta, nor Carnival of Shadows; not Recluse nor Romulus. Granted, I never was (nor am) the greatest l33t player, however I can hold my own. What made this toon is the multiple avenues to do anything. Defensively, the Damage Reducation is fantastic, especially towards the most common types, but respectable to the others. This is backed up by soft-cap defense to Smashing/Lethal (although no DDR). Further, The Amber Fist has full tanker HP and fantastic, reliable regen/healing. His endurance is never-ending, and he can laugh in the middle of Devouring Earth Swarms. Offensively, he's slow (as a Tanker), but the enemies hardly get to attack due to quick Faults and Power Sinks, and the occassional slow Tremor (although Tremor is more about drawing aggro in multiple spawns when no other AoE is up). For ST, Seismic Smash does reliable damage, and this with his other ST attacks means that the boss is usually not doing much but being held and the KD dance. Here is the build:

Since City of Heroes has shut down, The Amber Fist has been meditating, sitting like a rock in Prometheus Park. Once in a while he flies around the areas he remembers, reminiscing, and chanting, "Next year in Paragon..."
Title: Re: My CoX characters, costumes and builds

Next up is Wyldhunt, the oldest concept I had at time of shutdown, and the character I chose as my global handle when those were added to CoX. At first, Wyldhunt was an Energy Melee/Dark Armor Brute, however with a much-later release, I remade him into a Beast Mastery/Dark Miasma Mastermind - both iterations were Primal Earth villains.

My concept for him was drawn from an amalgamation of The Wild Hunt with Trow (Drow) legends from the Orkney Isles. So he was a Trow with mystical powers which moved to the Rogue Islands for unknown reasons, and chose to sow villainy wherever he was found. No, there was no specific vendetta nor "world domination" goal for this character, nor any special gut-wrenching story in his background. Just plain death, destruction, and chaos all around.

Wyldhunt pretty much kept the same costume all the time:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/Wyldhunt.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/Wyldhunt.jpg.html)
Neither the most pleasing to view (with his monstrously hairy chest) nor the most eye-wrenching, but menacing enough under his continuous Shadow Fall (not shown in this screenshot).

Wyldhunt's minions were named after various figures from Scottish/British/Welsh history. The T1 Wolves were Domarth, Bran, and Llacheu. The T2 Lionesses (I thought of them as young lions) were Meurig and Edern. The T3 Dire Wolf was Owain. Yes, I would have loved to reskin the lionesses as wolves, hounds, or even zombies for The Wild Hunt look, but casting Wyldhunt as not truly "the official" version of The Wild Hunt allowed me leeway for the lions (in my mind).

As a BM/DM MM, I understood that DM likely made all the difference in the world, and by the time I used this combination, I had enough veteran powers and understanding of CoX that it was easy to level and incarnate, along with making good contributions in iTrials/SFs. As Wyldhunt would view, the animals and Dark Servant were always expendable, and in tight quarters I never even bothered summoning the T1 Wolves. Wyldhunt played like a pet-heavy Controller, using the standard Dark Miasma tactics of hold, fear, slow, massive -tohit, and some heals. I even fit the three BM attacks in his build (for Pack Mentality) in the 40s.

Here is Wyldhunt's build:

Of course, all animals are skinned as wolves. He was more in the DPS role in CO (as most are) since control doesn't work very well. Right now, since I've become bored with CO, Wyldhunt has retreated to a cairn in Orkney, awaiting his villainous return to the Rogue Isles!

Next in line is the last character I leveled to 50 and Incarnated prior to shutdown: Pixelbeater, a Fire Blast/Kinetics Corrupter and Primal Earth hero.

Pixelbeater's story in his own words: "Wait - what?!? No, this can't be happening - it's just a dream. What do you mean I'm in a 'City of Heroes?' Sounds like some videogame stuff. Alright, alright - if this is where I am, and I can do this weird stuff, then just call me 'Pixelbeater.' I'll figure out the truth later. Meanwhile, watch out for that Shivan!" Then later, after level 20, was added: "Alright, so I've got a cape now - what about it? If I'm stuck in this coma-game, I guess I might as well look the part!"

After the initial costume (with added cape at level 20), I tried several, more "superheroic" variations, but none of them seemed right. So Pixelbeater was almost always seen in this getup:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/Pixelbeater.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/Pixelbeater.jpg.html)

Yes, I made Pixelbeater to take advantage of the OP fun of Fire/Kin. However, I liked the more active (and less pet-oriented) role of Corruptor vs Controller, so some would say I self-nerfed a bit in that regard. This character played to the edge, and was almost binary in effectiveness - almost, because if a damage spike got through his capped Def, Transfusion could save his bacon just long enough to fry the enemies. If that didn't work, Pixelbeater was crisped. Also, until obtaining the Clarion line of Incarnate powers, he had to rely on Breakfrees and teammates for status effects. I was able to solo with Pixelbeater, even through the entire Dark Astoria Incarnate chain, and was working on doing so at +4/x8 when the shutdown happened. However, he really shined in teams (for obvious reasons), and I played him aggressively, hanging around in melee range most of the time, darting out only occasionally when needed. Playing this setup was definitely an adrenaline rush! Here is the build:

It seems possible that the being behind Pixelbeater woke up when City of Heroes shut down, however this is completely unknown. Perhaps Pixelbeater reversed his Kinetic powers to place himself in an even deeper comatose stasis until the City is active again.

Captain Spray was the hero I was primarily leveling at the time of shutdown. He was a Water Blast/Time Manipulation Corruptor on Primal Earth. He made it to level 45.

He had this to say: "Citizens of Paragon City (and denizens of the Rogue Isles), I come in peace: we are all part of the great universal ocean. I have followed the timestreams to assist you in fighting the great evils which threaten to separate us, and to delve further into the Well of knowledge!"

Captain Spray needed only one outfit:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/CaptainSpray.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/CaptainSpray.jpg.html)

I tried to team whenever I played Captain Spray, although he could passably solo. It was just much more fun to use his buffs and water powers in teams. The graphical chaos was a sight to behold! The costume and description were enough to set the RP tone for this character - I didn't need to clutter it up with catch phrases nor too much IC banter. Honestly, Captain Spray's powers could create a space almost as safe for teams as The Amber Fist. The only difference being that if things went wrong, Captain Spray was going down too, whereas The Amber Fist could stay in it to put things right again. Here is the build I was working towards:

When City of Heroes shut down, he desperately flew about all the know (and some unknown) places, attempting to figure out what happened - perhaps the Well shut this group of universes out? Finally, he cried an ocean, went back to his own timestream, and placed himself in stasis until he can be useful again.

An older character I had, but never completed leveling, is The Sequencer. He's the only character I kept active who originated in Praetoria. He was a Robotics/Traps Mastermind, and a Loyalist who became a Hero upon transferring to Primal Earth.

The Sequencer's origin is that he was constructed by one of Neuron's staff who had a run-in with Metronome, and decided to fight with his own Clockwork-controller. However, after defeating Metronome's plots, The Sequencer was directed to join the clandestine Praetorian exploration of Primal Earth, and joined the heroes in order to help smooth the way for Cole. Yes, he was a sleeper agent who was never activated.

In Praetoria, The Sequencer looked like this:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/TheSequencer1.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/TheSequencer1.jpg.html)

After transferring to Paragon City, The Sequencer looked like this:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/TheSequencer2.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/TheSequencer2.jpg.html)

Since the idea for The Sequencer was to be a notch up from a mere Metronome, I named his minions accordingly. The Battle Drones were Track1, Track2, and Track3. The Protector Bots were Click Track and Drum Loop. The Assault Bot was Arpeggiator.

Of course, Robots/Traps is a wild fun ride. I had the Veteran Reward Power Nemesis Staff, and I used the hell out of it (in between trap-laying) until around level 30. Then at level 46, when I got Provoke, I laid on that. I never took much time laying Trip Mines unless I was soloing a harder boss, but kept a moderate Mastermind pace going through missions. Of course on teams in small maps, I didn't bother summoning the Battle Drones. For a while, a duoed a lot with a friend who also had a Robots/Traps MM, and the two of us could easily keep a map going the entire time. In the larger Fifth Column cave warrens, we would split up and almost have a race to see who could mow through our respective parts of the map fastest. We'd get other people to join us in a PUG and go to town. Another "game" I'd play is to see how long I could keep my Veteran Reward Power Shield Drone alive - however I gave up on that at level 40. Unfortunately, do to my time leveling and Incarnating other characters, The Sequencer was at level 46 when the lights went out.

Here is The Sequencer's build plan:

Truly, the lights did go out for The Sequencer when City of Heroes shut down, and he is waiting, silently and absolutely still, gathering dust and grime, for the day when he receives new input.

The newest character I made was Deeper 9, a Darkness Control/Darkness Assault Dominator, and a Primal Earth Villain.

Deeper 9 was inspired by a strange combination of the old Heavy Metal animated movie, the even older Barbarella movie, disco, and some weird reconceptualization of the Dominator Darkness sets and some costume options. Anyway, imagine this in an evil version of a Barry White voice: Deeper 9 is an assassin of love, sent from the furthest, darkest reaches of space to our lonely little planet, to pull the day down into night, our joy into pity, and our energy to naught. He is the nightmare of romance, where the heartstring tugs are torn and the searing heat turned to frozen, black ice. Beware! While you enjoy the night, so does he...

Deeper 9's costume:
(https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac50/wyldhaunt/City%20of%20Heroes/Deeper9.jpg) (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/wyldhaunt/media/City%20of%20Heroes/Deeper9.jpg.html)

Unfortunately, Deeper 9 was only level 13 at shutdown. Perhaps he was a little too successful turning joy into pity... but I digress. I have no personal experience with how his build would have performed at higher levels. I do know that the Darkness Control powers looked dang cool with Deeper 9's costume!

Here is Deeper 9's build plan:

Perhaps Deeper 9 is active in the deepest unknown of the Paragon City shutdown. Perhaps he is the one satisfied with this nadir of playing heroes/villains. I doubt it though. In my experience, those who tear down don't find joy once the tearing is done, and if they feel anything, they feel more empty than those who would rebuild.

I don't have the costume saved on this computer, in fact i'd have to remake it in the icon editor, nore the exact build, but I do remember the overall design of my energy/time corruptor.  Energy torrent was equipped with the knockback to knockdown enhancement, I had planned to implement both the snipe and nova power in I24, but I didn't bother with AIM(not enough of a damage boost to be worth it imo on a corruptor), or power push(redundant, just attack the guys you wanna knock).

Granted, I know some are thinking such a combo is contradictory, one min/maxer told me as much, but I was able to make it work.  I generally relied more on farsight and power build up to keep my defenses high, and I had tough/weave coming on a spec(assuming I didn't spec it in, I may have tossed it I24 though).  I generally knocked enemies into walls and such to have some control over the scatter so I could keep them within time's juncture.  I also focused on positrons blast heavily as well as getting as much +recharge from other IO sets as I could(cannot remember all of them exact atm, I didn't use mids and don't have it now).

Well, that is it for the CoX characters I'm going to share here. There are a ton more, however they had dropped off my radar by time of shutdown. I was going to originally add these to another thread for sharing characters, but ran into the "don't necro" warning, so I started this one. If you want to share your character information here (background, costume, build), by all means join in!

LaughingAlex, it seems you found the key to KB - I never spent enough time on KB builds to master the corner trick, though I've seen it in action. In reviewing Pixelbeater's use of Aim, I discovered I posted the wrong build. That was my build plan for him when I24 hit, however I tweaked it a little later and came up with the below. I kept Aim in more for +tohit than +dam - it was good for two situations: 1) kicking off a fight (Aim -> Fulcrum Shift -> dmg power) and 2) when fighting +4/x8 mobs which like to floor hero tohit.

The other primary changed in Pixelbeater's build was to jettison Blazing Bolt, Inferno, and Focused Accuracy. I had BB when leveling just to one-shot particular pesky mobs, and had both Inferno and Focused Accuracy to try them out. BB turned out to be not very useful (duh). Inferno perversely hurt Pixelbeater's survivability, due to its self -end (and -endrec); I always preferred just blasting more of Pixelbeater's regular damage and buff/debuff powers. Focused Accuracy was more end-expensive than I wanted, even with Transference around. So I swapped these for other utility (and marginally useful) powers: Assault, Afterburner, and Summon Disruptor. Assault helped myself and the team just that little extra bit (with less of an end hit than Focused Accuracy). I like Afterburner as a utility choice - it's a fun boost to Fly, and some extra def if I needed to retreat for a moment. Summon Disruptor was almost unused as a power (possibly OK for soloing, but not really); it was more an IO mule. Here's the correct Pixelbeater build:

so i been messing around with mids  lately and im curious what others think know
what would be a good combo to put with Time Manipulation  since it deals with time and no other power set does what would make sense to match with it in sense of making a toon  was just curious what others thought

If you're a physicist (or a sorcerer) playing Calvinball with the fundamentals of nature, like Dr. Manhattan or Blackstarr, you could use Energy Blast, Electric Blast, Radiation Blast, or Gravity Control.

Maybe there's a way to refrigerate by varying the flow of time. Ice Control or Ice Blast.

Sneaky spies or assassins could find a use for someone who can manipulate time. Ninjas or even Mercenaries might team up with you. You could take some stealth or movement powers to justify the connection, because it's a little thin. Group Teleport would be in the theme, or the Stealth pool, or just take Superspeed for yourself and say that your ability to control time enables you and your ninjas to move quickly without making noise.

Nice characters Wyldhunt!

I only have mids builds for a handful of my alts. I didn't usually worry about it until they hit 40. I slot 35's and since that can take a while, I was never in that much of a hurry.

I do have screenies and Bios for all of them.

I did have one idea though, since he is based on the wyld hunt why not just say the reason he is here is that the prey is better here and thus the hunt as well. Seems perfectly valid to me.

Energy rifle makes thematic sense but since time is so clicky it doesn't jive well with equipped weapons
Me personally I never cared all that much for matching thematically similar power sets I usually had a character concept in mind and then tried to fit powers around it: Illusionist swordsmen who dispatches foes quickly from their blindside? Ninjablade/Ninjutsu. Time Manipulator who yells out attacks? Time/Sonic. Fire Themed Swordsmen? Katana or Dual Blade/Fire. So on and so forth
