Title: Any regrets or unfinished business?
Post by: KingsGambit on November 24, 2013, 02:49:18 PM
The *thing* with MMOs (or at least *a* thing) is that there is always another goal or milestone ahead which motivates us to keep playing. CoX not only had such things in spades, it also encouraged "alt-itis" which meant we often had multiple characters for all of whom we had lofty ambitions. And with the closure, those ambitions can't be realised.

Perhaps you always wanted to level a particular character or archetype but never got around to it. Perhaps you were partway through a dream build. Or maybe there was a badge or costume set you wanted to unlock but which remained elusive. What unfinished business, what loose ends did you leave behind that you would've liked to see to the end?

In my case, I would've liked to finally get around to levelling my SS/Will brute to 50. He was one of my cooler character designs but I never got on with the playstyle and he languished in the low/mid-levels for most of his existence. I suspect he was very much a late-bloomer and would've been mighty indeed at 50 but I didn't persevere with it when I had the chance. It would also have been nice to get one of the "Master of..." TF badges, but I never got around to it. There're a few others, but if I could play today those would probably be toward the top of my "to do" list.

I never did tier 4 all of my incarnate abilities on any character. I had hoped to have done that at least on my ill/rad controller (the character that could be considered my main in city of alts/heroes)

- Never made a shield character.
- Never did the Doc Quaterfield TF.
- Never broke 1325 badges on my main.

This is making me sad.  :'(

Never finished all of the original CoH content.  Never finished all of the content in CoV or GR.  Never played a Stalker to L50.  Actually I only had one L50 in the 8 years.  Didn't get a chance to visit the call box.

Oh so many regrets.

I have no regrets, or even unfinished business I care that much about, but I had lots and lots of unstarted business.

I've gotten into the habit, with games, of not seeing the new thing as quickly as possible... instead I keep enjoying the stuff I have already until I feel like I have played that out to my satisfaction. Normally that works great (especially with new games, since by the time I get around to buying them, they are all tested out and patched up and they cost less than $10... the miracle of living in Computer Savings Time (http://www.pvponline.com/comic/2000/12/02/sat-dec-02) ^_^7), but it is a mixed bag when your MMO is closed up ahead of its time. :(  With all the stuff that was being added in the post-freem-15 CoH, there was a ton that I had yet to complete. For instance, I'd gone through blueside First Ward fully, but only once... hadn't done redside there at all, hadn't done Night Ward at all (the same, obviously, for any story arcs added after that). Heck, there were new powersets I hadn't even added to my account yet, so there was a lot more to do there, too.

It seems like normally a once-burgeoning MMO would get to sit for a while at maintenance mode towards the end of its lifetime, so you'd have time to play it out, but for CoH, that mode was in the middle (frankly, it is amazing how much they did get done during that period... I admire the dedication they showed).

Never got to play Plant or Illusion Control.  Never got my SoA his pets (not even including his Epic and Lore pets - imagine all the spiders...).  Never got my Staff/Dark Brute to 50.  Never got to try out Beast Mastery.  Didn't get any of my MMs to 50 except my Bots/Storm (I really wanted to get my Thugs/Traps to 50).  Didn't get to run SSA2 with all of my characters.  Didn't get a chance to really give Sorcery a run for its money (let alone all the other sets I was looking forward to).

In general, I never got to continue making all the characters that still sit in the back of my brain, demanding to be made.

I "went rogue" for a beast mastery MM, my last character before sunset. My only regret (apart from not seeing him through to the end) was that the Nature secondary never saw the light of day as it would've been a perfect accompaniment, both practically and in a conceptual sense. It was thematically fun to play (my character himself was an animal that varied by costume) but ultimately no different from the other melee pet sets. Speaking of which...

Thugs/Traps was one I always wanted to make but never did. I always felt that combination was quite unbalanced, particularly in terms of single target ownage. I don't think any other combination of any archetype in the game could match Thugs/Traps for soloing and specifically, soloing archvillains. The Posse ability in particular was above and beyond even the temporary "seventh" pet available to zombie MMs. Combined with the superlative control in Traps even Recluse himself would wind up paralyzed by explosive vomiting while getting beaten down by punks.

Thinking back actually, I did have a thugs MM for a time (I think on a second account when I ran one for a time). Called Bubba Gum, he was black with an afro and 70s 'tash. The thugs all had typical "blacksploitation" type names too. I imagine he'd have been fun to play.

I didn't get any epic ATs to 50 at all. I think the closest I got was 35 with a peacebringer but I really struggled with that character.

I never really finished all the story arcs. That was my goal, and I started making headway during the final year of the game...There were also a few character builds that I never got around to finishing up, like my Time/Elec Defender (Chronorat), my Fire/Stone Tanker (Volcantus), my Ice/Kin Controller (The Mighty Snowcone). I'm really looking forward to remaking these characters in some form or another with one of the Plan Zs. And I suppose there were quite a few RP arcs that got cut short as a result, too.

My only real regrets are that my SG basically broke appart from the news, and not many of them hang around on these forums, so I only hear from them once in a blue moon on our SG's website which is virtually abandoned now...

That and never getting to do the incarnate content...

My biggest regret is that I didn't finish giving all my characters a final respec.  While I did respec a lot of them during the last couple of months, I still had quite a few to go.   They all had good, playable builds, of course, but I wanted to give them an end of game, tidying and tighten up, along with finally giving them some of the pricier and new special IOs I had been hoarding.  Some characters still had non-inherent Fitness.   :(

As for new content, I haven't seen a lot of the new stuff.  I don't miss them though because starting way back around when Faultline was introduced, I had enough alts that switching back and forth between them, I couldn't keep the story arcs coherent anymore anyway.  That said, I really was expecting to get around to them eventually when I got really bored with the old content.

I don't even remember how many 50s I had. I knew what I liked to play and I explored those ATs and power sets pretty fully. So I don't really regret much there except for maybe not trying out more incarnate content.

I do regret not being there at the end. The closer the end came, the more quiet and depressing the game became for me. I played red side mostly and it was empty a lot of the time. Many of the people I knew were gone, and the few that remained were mostly afk when they were on or not talking. It made me sad to even log in, so eventually I stopped doing it. So I wasn't there when the game shut down and I missed seeing the City go.

I didn't make a martial arts scrapper till the last week of the game because I hated the KB on the early ST attack, so I plugged a -KB IO in that, and on the final Monday made a MA/shield scrapper called Kinda Lingers (as well as the obvious, this was also the name of the final song of the final episode of a well loved British TV series).

At shutdown, I was logged on to her, she was 50+2 fully IOd out and one of the most fun toons I played. I really regret not having more time playing her.

I hadn't done all the SSTFs. If my checklist is to be believed, that's the only blueside badge mission/arc/TF/whatever I hadn't done with someone, somewhere.

There were quite a few TFs/SFs, Trials, and even iTrials to go through. Was just starting Night Ward on my Praetorian character right around the time of shutdown too. Would've liked to have finished that.

NO REGRETS! Never any regrets.

There wasn't a wasted minute or second in the game. All the time I spent in game was worth the trouble, even if I wasn't doing anything "important" right at that moment. I got to do silly and stupid things just because I could (jumping off the side of the ski chalet anyone?) and it was worth every minute.

I would have loved to see the I24 content go live and the end of the Pandora storyline. I wanted to fight the Batallion and see if more than 50 people ever got around to finding (not to mention, playing) my AE mission. I wanted to see if I could get a scrapper up to 50 (melee is not my thing.)

I wanted to rescue Fusionette just one more time, try and save my Doppleganger (and maybe succeed this time), try once again to give Seer Marino some peace of mind, and help Penny Yin find her father once more. It's all unfinished business.

It shouldn't have to be.

There's something in that. I'll never regret the time I spent, in the wee hours of the morning before the black dawn, having Doctor Jameson emerge from Praetoria, his arcs finished.

My one regret is that I never got to participate in a DKTF.  I leveld a Warshade on Virtue just so I could and was about to begin slotting him in earnest when NCSoft took a large steaming dump on that goal.

Yeah. I would have loved to play a Donkey Kong Task Force too. Jumping my way up a building construction site that for some bizarre reason had a thousand barrels stored at the top, to face off against a gigantic Rikti Monkey with nothing but Gabriel's Hammer. All to rescue a pretty princess. (Well okay, it was probably Percy Winkley. That little knob just couldn't stay un-kidnapped for two straight minutes.)

*sigh* Sounds like it would've been awesome.

My High Level Regrets are
-Never getting my Time/Sonic defender to the iTrials my VIP status had just barely run out before EFFING NC SOFT pulled the plug, I've looked in mids and this toon would have been godly
-Triumph wasn't able to get "The Hard Way" badge
-Not exploiting the hold set conversion bug more(hehe)

Oh, but we did get that badge on Triumph.  I was there on my character Long Shock, an electric blaster.  It was run by Snow Globe I believe.

"The Hard Way" was earned by me on 9/2/2012
"The Really Hard Way" was earned on 10/28/2012

I helped out as much as I could in the following weeks, but I don't think we ever could get "The Really Hard Way" again.

My biggest regret is my last new toon - Knockerbacker. An Energy/ForceField defender rabbit I'd laid out in mids.
He was the first toon I'd ever rolled for the sheer fun of it.
Designed without any damage agenda, he was all about knockback uberpayload.
I would KB a baddie in the streets of SC, then stand over his ragdolling body. As soon as his ragdoll mode ended and he'd start to stand up, my Repulsion Field would KB him straight down into the ground and slingshot him clear into the upper-atmosphere. To add to the hilarity of it, I'd nail him with Power Burst launching him so high he'd become untargetable.

I would laugh sooo hard I would run out of breath. Then I'd do it again! and again! and again! Until I was in tears laughing hysterically.

I was soloing him in the early morning hours on Sept 1 when the chat channels lit up with news of the sunset. I leveled him a few more times after that, but with the dark cloud of the sunset looming, I couldn't laugh as hard at his antics anymore. The purity of his appeal felt... stained, now.

In time, I believe he would have trumped my main as my absolute favorite toon to play. I regret not seeing his full level 50 KB potential in an ITF, or against lanterns or flying incorporeal swords. I miss him most, for what he never had the chance to become.

I rolled the same combination also as a less than serious toon. A friend had a toon called something like "T3h pwnz3rn4t0r", so mine was called "T3h 5uxx3rn4t0r" or similar.

I have a lot of "unfinished" business so to speak. The last three months were hard, and I wasn't in a place to get a lot of play time. I had someone three or four levels from 50 I wish I pushed and completed. I wish I completed Rocket Man on my main Rogue. I wish I had taken more demos and screenies. And most of all, I wish I'd have been able to keep playing. :/

No regrets, but lots of unfinished business.  I only leveled up 1 villain to 50, focusing on the Destined One and Scirocco patron arcs -- I would have liked to have done the others.  I didn't get much time in Night Ward.  And, of course, lots of combinations I never really got to play up fully.  I also never really got into the market until the very end when purples started getting dumped, at which point I was able to commit to fully IO'ing out one character, my SoA, which was pretty awesome.  I want City of Heroes back  #SaveCoH.

Regrets? ... I've had a few....

Not taking my PB all the way to 50.

Not getting any Stalkers to 50....

Not doing any Shard TF's

Not making that all out Mega Tank that just won't be defeated.....

Perhaps in City of Titans I'll get the chance to address these in some form or another.

Not playing more. Unfortunately my old computer was falling apart and I couldn't play the newer Issues. One thing or another prevented me from getting on as well as a computer that was falling apart so I didn't get to experience Praetoria and the massive new Task Forces.

Regrets? None really. I took breaks from CoH now and again when I needed to focus on other things, but always came back and enjoyed the time I was there. Plus, I made sure to play a LOT for about 2 months before the shutdown.

Unfinished business? LOADS. There's tons of stuff I never got to finish, so yeah. lots of unfinished business.

I mentioned this in another thread, but the only genuine regret is that I didn't have the time to be as much a part of 'the community' as I would have liked. The 'culture' that was collectively built in the City of Heroes community IS rich and meaningful, and the fact so many of us are still here one year later is testament to that. for all the debates that happened on those forums, they were far more civil and respectful than in most MMO forums (which in my opinion are for the most part toxic cesspools- and makes me only miss what we had there that much more). Much of it is still here, but I'm sure we can all agree, something special was lost, and I hope we carry that maturity and civility into its spiritual successors.

I visited the forums occasionally (edit: often lurked, but posted only occasionally), but most of my 'playtime' was with my little SG, with little time to dedicate elsewhere. My online time is (like most folks) limited. I don't specifically regret that I didn't have as much time to play the game as I would have liked- I doubt I would have ever run out of personal goals or character concepts to strive for, so there was never a 'good time' for its closure in my book. With that said, I wish I had more time that I could have put toward getting to know the community I was a part of in it a little better. With some of the drama that came off my server sometimes (Champion) I may have been better off staying in the rafters watching everyone and knowing them without being 'in it' but looking back, I (and without the desire to be arrogant- Champion) may be poorer for my not having the time and inclination to be more a part of it either. The regret here, I guess, is that I'll never really know.

Still, this community at large still stands and as much as I lurk, I'm proud to be a part of it. Thank you for letting me 'in it' for every moment it stands :)

Everyone still here, holding the torch, is a hero of mine...

Lyc~

I never did finish the GR Praetoria content.  Dabbled in it, but never made it past the first few levels....it just didn't grab me for some reason.

My main regret, however, was hounding NC customer support for a refund of my annual fee, paid mere days before the sunset announcement, since the initial sunset announcement didn't indicate anything about refunds.  Well, NC customer support honored my request after a couple weeks of correspondence, and refunded my annual fee in full...............which then revoked my VIP status.  All my characters locked (dozens) with only a handful of unlock keys.  Of course, a couple days after that, NC puts out a refund policy (which they should have bloody well done with the initial sunset announcement), which would have allowed me to retain my VIP status.  Well, that mainly ended my time in CoX.  I rarely logged in during those last three months which was a real shame.

I miss my characters.  I miss my main, Cinnamon Red, a badged-out, purpled-out badass Peacebringer on Champion server.  I miss so much...

I never finished my perfect build on my Plant/Storm/Earth controller. He was one of my top five toons to play and could destroy and entire mob before I even finished my basic attack chain, and he would have been god-like even pre-incarnate if I'd gotten ahold of all the purples and various pieces I needed.

Same regret applies to Magical Master, my Ill/Emp troller. I rolled him up in a pact with a friend on a Claws/Regen scrapper and between just the two of us we could decimate max difficulty missions, and I was well on my way to perma-phantoms.

I regret never being able to do a Doc Q TF despite wanting to. Never could get a team together.

Never got a Praetorian to level 20, and never did run anything Resistance. I ran Loyalist both paths partway but never all of the content, and I did a Resistance spy character but never did run any actual resistance content.

Never got a Mastermind to 50.

Never did much of any Villain content.

There are many many bits of unfinished business, but I fully intend to finish them whenever S.C.O.R.E. steps from the shadows. I'll be spending lots of time enjoying the city again.

Never got my sole Mastermind out of the late 30s. This was the second redsider I ever made (and I pre-ordered CoV...), and a much loved character from a roleplaying standpoint. But I never could warm up to playing MMs...  Didn't quite finish building out my Dark Controller to T4/sea-of-purple status. A few other minor goals, but nothing else left on the table that I really considered important.

I managed a few other major goals before the end (MSTF on a Stalker, perma-PA on my Ill/Kin (if the Inf spent on that build were dollars, I'd be Carlos Slim), Disruptor badge on my "force multiplier" PvP main, etc...).

No regrets, ever, though...and I miss it all so much.

I had a list of characters with story already in mind I didn't get to make.

Along with a Dual Pistols/Martial Assault blaster called Lockstock (though did make him as a DP/NRG blaster), I had remakes of my existing villains Solarisar and Feybris Lamia as a Dark Melee/Bio Armour Brute and Psi-Melee/Willpower Scrapper respectively.

The mention of the planned Sniper Rifle and Savage Melee sets also put me in mind of a new SR/Martial blaster and the chance to transfer my she-werewolf from Champs to CoH.

Ah well, can still write them and make use of them elsewhere.

Never actually got a toon to lvl 50 despite playing on and off for several years. Before I quit (came back several years later) the first time I managed to get a controller to lvl 30'ish circa mid 00's which was much harder then it was in recent times.

However given AE I dont regret it as much as I would have if AE never existed...

Not putting Statesman's body in a subway train packed with explosives and sending it running under NCsoft's HQ.

Oh my.

I think my biggest regret was my all-consuming desire to earn influence. Farming for purples and such certainly helped me reach my goal of 100 billion inf (thanks in part to some of those incredible zero to 2 billion inf guides that showed market savvy). However, I never did finish the water power blaster, nor the plant controller, and I really wanted to give my kin scrapper one more try after reaching the conclusion that they were no fun and more squishy than my blasters.

In the end, I just tell myself I didn't lose, I just ran out of time.
