Title: Ding Dong
Post by: Eoraptor on September 25, 2013, 04:19:16 AM
:gonk: I just realized... I don't get to trick or treat this year. No hot new hamidon costumes for me!! :gonk:

:gonk: I just realized... if a 50 foot tall monster appears outside a haunted house, I should RUN FOR MY LIFE! :gonk:

Well... You could always just wrap yourself in saran wrap, get some metal coat hangars and string to dangle some colored ping pong balls from, and go trick or treating in your neighborhood, but I'm pretty sure your neighbors will look at you funny if you do that.... They might call the cops too.... Or maybe some gentlemen in white coats who come bearing "I Love Me!" Jackets... Just saying... :P

Why I miss COH: Because 30 year old bald white men can't Trick-or-Treat in real life without looking pathetic.

Nor will attackable enemies spawn randomly from doors you knock on, and even if they did you wouldn't gain experience, items or new superpowers by defeating them. :p

I would, but that's because some small part of me wants a giant pumpkin headed monster to trample through town for giggles while I'm roasting marshmellows over the smoldering ruins...

I must miss Red side or something(it was a safe and legal way to vent rage, after all...)... :o

If they did, who came out? heroes?  ;)

Yeah, every time I was ToTing with a villain and I got the message that was prelude to a reward, I felt it inappropriate: "You have been nice!"  Surely for a villain that should announce a penalty instead of a reward.

I'm reminiscing about the temp Costume powers; e.g. getting to look like a Storm Shaman or a Freak Show boss, etc. at will for a couple of weeks, while telling jokes with friends and SGmates while knocking on doors.  Yeah, Halloween CoH-style was awesome!

Make that 47 years old and replace "Trick-or-Treat" with "laying waste to a number of supernatural beasties with weapons that are prohibited by the Geneva Protocol", not to mention changing "pathetic" to "awesome" and that's me as well.  October was always my favorite month for CoH.  Sigh.

Alright, a question for real world Treat or Treating:  do you have any suggestions for non-mainstream, candies for me to pass out?  You know, something the kids can't just get from the supermarket or the local bodega's candy rack.

I'd prefer it to come in small, prepackaged potions, of course.  Like, I don't want to have to spend a day manually filling (crack) baggies with spoonfuls of loose bits that parents will automatically toss out anyway.  It also needs to be relatively cheap on a per unit basis.  Like, I wouldn't mind spending $25 for something really interesting, but I don't want to drop $25 on a box that only has 25 candies in it.  There needs to be enough to provide me with sufficient inventory for the night.

I used to buy boxes of Tomoe Ame rice candy for my sons when they were little.  They are not sugary sweet, and the 'cellophane' looking wrapper is actually rice paper that melts in your mouth. (The boys used to delight in popping a candy into their mouths and having folks say, "You forgot to take the wrapper off!!!!!!) There is also a little toy inside, or used to be.

Here is the website of a great company that deals with unique candies...

Sandy Candy (https://ixquick-proxy.com/do/spg/show_picture.pl?l=english&cat=pics&c=pf&q=small+packages+of+unusual+candy&h=319&w=720&th=70&tw=160&fn=dragon%2520boogers.jpg&fs=67.3%20k&el=boss_pics_1&tu=http:%2F%2Fts2.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DH.4707448538989533%26pid%3D15.1%26H%3D70%26W%3D160&rl=NONE&u=http:%2F%2Fwww.niftycandy.com%2Fweirdcandy.html&udata=e94b468aae114815ab9411aaaa791fce&rid=LFLNSLMSNQSL&oiu=http:%2F%2Fwww.niftycandy.com%2Fimages%2Fdragon%2520boogers.jpg)

Healthier stuff:
Welch's also makes some GREAT fruit gummies and fruit rollups in little packages, and they are tasty. Also, yogurt covered raisins, apple chips, and don't forget trail mix.

Interesting candy...I'll have to try some if I run into any.

I remember Pop rocks, air heads as one of the funnier candies I tasted.

I've had those; not bad, but the rice wrapping paper kind of dulls some of the flavour

Yep! Web of Fear and Enemy of the World per announcement in London last night at midnight! More Troughton = Good!!!!

The cool thing about this is that this is exactly what the rumor said was going to happen. Hopefully the other part about 90+ episodes being recovered is true as well. (But I can't bring myself to believe that. It would be too cruel if false)

Yeah 100 missing episodes found was too good to be true.  I am glad it was Troughton though since he does have the most missing episodes.

Well, they might have found other episodes that they already had. But this also doesn't preclude their being other episodes in the stash.

The only ones I am pretty sure we'll never see is Journey to the Unknown and The Dalek's Master Plan. They weren't exported so those are probably actually gone.

Dalek Master Plan was exported except for ep 7 "the Feast of Steven" as it was a Christmas episode and had nothing at all to do with the story.

So that is the one episode that everyone is sure we will never see turn up.

Really? My reading was that even though they made 16mm prints to offer to overseas markets, but no one was interested until 1972. Screening prints sent to Australia didn't get aired, Australliain censors thought it too violent. (no one knows what happened to these) Some time before 1976, the BBC prints got junked. According to the wiki article, these two serials, Mission to the Unknown and Master Plan of the Daleks were never screened outside the UK.

But if you have a different source, I'd love to see it. It would make a bunch of Who fans very happy to to know there was a better chance of getting them back. Heck, I don't think anyone is even looking overseas for these two so if you got something please share! :)

Actually you are correct. I just did a little more research and the episodes that turned up where not from overseas, as I thought.
And it seems to be the only Hartnell not sold overseas in the '60's.

But turning up at all was already a miracle so the rest might be in someone's attic or garage or something still waiting to be found.

Of course if you looked it up on Wikipedia, that is not always 100% reliable.

Yeah, you right about that. Wiki can be wrong, but I will say that the one time I tried to post a bit of trivia about a quote in a film, they gave me a lot of grief about my sources. I had to try three different ones before they shut about it. Interestingly, you can't use a wiki as source on wikipedia. I eventually had to upload a clip of the film, with the quote. If you quote a book, you have to provide publishers info not of the book as a whole but the particular edition you are quoting from.

BUT,

I think I read about this originally on Kasterborous or maybe Doctor who Monthly. But I can't remember where so I went to the wiki.

In any event, good news for the fans of the show! Hopefully more to come. Would love to see Evil of the Daleks or Fury from the Deep!

Before the official announcement I had read that it was probably Troughton episodes recovered.

I was kind of hoping for at least Power of the Daleks ep 1 to see his first episode for real and not a reconstruction.

I also wished it could be the Highlanders - Jamie's first story.

But these stories they recovered are great - Enemy with Troughton playing two parts and now we at least have the first episode with the asp of Col Lethbridge-Stewart.

At least it wasn't more Space Pirates . (though ANY missing ones recovered would be welcome of course)

Here is the website of a great company that deals with unique candies...

Sandy Candy (http://niftycandy.com/)

Just a follow up.  I did order candies from them.  I got 3 flavors of Boogers.  They were pricey, though.  Even with the wholesale pricing (with a $150 minimum order), each tube of Boogers was $0.85 each  :( .  And FYI, regular retail pricing was $2.00 each :o .  But I had to get them because they were in test tubes!  Why?  Because they looked like they could fit into a bandolier (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00551HARU/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)!  A totally unique way to pass out candies.

Normally, I don't dress up in costumes, but the bandolier was going to strange if I wore it on top of a sweat shirt.  So I ordered a few pieces from Steampunk Emporium (http://www.steampunkemporium.com/) cobble up an outfit.  I wanted a white mad scientist coat, but the whites were sold out.  I had to settle on brown.  I would have preferred to be seen carrying an old timey rifle or scimitar, but these were last minute thoughts and I didn't have time to acquire them.  So I just used a Chinese broad sword I had lying around.  The ensemble looked better than I imagined.  Some of the kids got a kick out of it.

Nice one, SB.  8)
Due to illness i missed out on most of the Halloween fun in real life, and it made me miss the absence of CoH's festivities even more. (Much easier to ToT in game when homebound.) Had a lot of kids this year, so it was pretty entertaining anyway.

And the thread title keeps reminding me of this song's opening (http://youtu.be/t2mU6USTBRE?t=28s).
