Title: Ms. Liberty: Vindicators & Longbow
Post by: Felderburg on July 03, 2013, 03:53:05 PM
So I was looking at the Vindicators and Longbow articles on the wiki, and noticed something interesting. Ms. Liberty formed the Vindicators "to aid redeemed villains, dark heroes, and visitors from other dimensions." She then started Longbow, which is "bent on the destruction of Arachnos." I'd never really noticed it before, but aren't those two philosophies sort of mutually incompatible? Or is it that she wants to dismantle the Arachnos organization, and redeem its members? Given what I recall of longbow dialogue in game, I'm not sure that's the case, though...

Seems to make sense to me. "If you'd like to turn to the light side, the Vindicators are here to help you. If you'd prefer to stay with Arachnos, Mr Longbow Nullifier will keep administering the kicking. Your choice."

I thought the Vindicators were put together by Miss Liberty (Statesman's Granddaughter) and Longbow was put together by Ms. Liberty (Statesman's Daughter).

In an event, I still have issues with the Ms/Miss difference.

Miss Liberty is his daughter and Ms. Liberty is the trainer in Atlas, his granddaughter. Ms. Liberty, his granddaughter, organized both.

Miss Liberty organized something but I can't recall what off the top of my head. Freedom Corps? Hero Corps?

Statesman and Miss Liberty started Freedom Corps, yes. Hero Corps was started by a civilian with Crey backing.

I had characters who liked Longbow--but I had a /lot/ of characters who hated it and liked "breaking bows" for fun. I suppose that the philosophies could be compatible, but I always felt Libby was more a Vig than true Hero--and a little... blind? HEr actions got a /lot/ of people in trouble multiple times (Psyche's death anyone?--and let's not forget the V-day arc--and then she freaks out over Minx and Sands--the heck?!). I always thought she was too prissy for her own good and was one push away from going over the edge and joining her Great Uncle. But that's me.

Well, you see, Libby has some unresolved issues. They're not really her personal issues you understand, more like inherited family problems.

Being the granddaughter of Statesman, she has a lot of people expecting her to carry on the family business. And just what is that business? Well, fighting the dark forces of crime and tyranny of course. And who is darker and more tryannical than Uncle Stefan and his Arachnos forces? This is not a job that one girl (talented though she may be) can do alone so, with a smile and some persuasion (and a big ol' endorsement from granddad) she convinced the United Nations to let her field her own private army.

Now she has a private army and not the slightest idea how to use it. So what does she do? She declares that it will be used for the destruction of Arachnos and leaves it at that. Now, overall Longbow has been a check on Arachnos outside of the Islands, but is far from 'destroying' the legitimate government of a sovereign nation.

Now, Libby isn't entirely stupid, she knows she's in over her head but what can she do now? Just what any modern young woman would do, check in with her peer group. And who, you ask are these peers? Right, the sidekicks. Lets face it, that's where she really sort of fits in. Sure she's competant, all of them are, but when you're in the shadows of the Phalanx well, nothing you can do will be good enough. But, despite the lingering inferiority complex, they do give her good advice and they become the Vindicators. She declares to the press that their mission is to do the kind of things that she really wants to do anyway. Since they're just the 'B' team, and it looks like Libby is the one being all generous and kind hearted, nobody questions this.

This, as I see it, is how Libby deals with all of the expectations that have been placed upon her. It's a bit of a contradiction, but when you're HIS granddaughter, who's going to argue?

Headcanon accepted, JWBullfrog. That seems pretty consistent and a better answer than 'god knows what the writers were doing'
