Title: Lego City of Heroes
Post by: LightofthePhoenix on April 06, 2013, 08:42:46 PM
Recently I went about making my Willpower/Fire Tanker, Dragonfly (http://lightofthephoenix.deviantart.com/art/Dragonfly-Costume-1-324895312), into a Lego minifig (http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/482295_10151387442714503_1091494868_n.jpg).  Used a Black Widow minifig, replaced the arms with fleshtone arms, and heavily modified wings from a Geonosian minifig (Star Wars) to allow it to fit under the Black Widow hair piece.  I'm personally happy with the results.

After that I got inspiration to try making other things from City of Heroes in Lego.  Unfortunately I don't have unlimited access to every piece possible and don't have the kind of money it would take to get the pieces needed... so I'm just designing them in Lego's Digital Designer program.

First up is a Malta Hercules Class Titan:
Includes Malta Gunslinger and Malta Sapper minifigs.
Total number of parts in the Titan itself (not including minis) is about 173 pieces I believe.

Up next I think I'm going to try an Arachnos Tarantula.  If anyone has any other ideas on what I should try to make feel free to make suggestions.  I did make a Lord Recluse minifig in the digital designer but I'm not 100% pleased with it.  Was only able to give him 6 appendages on his back instead of 8.  Might include an image of him with the Tarantula.

Great! Fantastic!

Where's the brick list?

That looks amazingly accurate.

Great job!

Here's the parts list.  If someone has a suggestion of where I could upload the LDD file to let people download it I'll start providing the files for these builds so people can look at their construction in more detail.  Lego Digital Designer itself is free and can be downloaded here (http://ldd.lego.com/).  The program does have a feature to generate instructions for a build but it's a bit wonky, sometimes having pieces hover above other parts because the part that connects it to the other parts is added on in a later step.  The missiles in particular are really freaky.  It has three of the little red studs hovering above where the 2x4 plate they connect to should be before it puts it in and then connects the other 5 red studs.

That's totally awesome!

My suggestion would be take a page from the Lego Architect series and make a small, but recognizable version of Atlas Park city hall with Atlas out front.

I remember that for a while you could buy things made in the program. If you could still do that I'd buy the Titan immediatly.

They claim they'll be bringing back the option to custom order parts. Just not the cool packaging that goes with it.

I thought Cuusoo took its place.  I'd love if they really did give us the option to order individual parts again... I don't have a Lego store anywhere near me to go buy them in person.

The official Lego stores are pretty limited in scope anyhow. If you're doing town stuff, it's great. But if you want to do something more high-tech, it's going to leave you hungry.

Try this. http://www.bricklink.com/

It's more or less the Craigslist of Lego. It's got everything.

Yeah I know about bricklink.  The problem is that normally if you want a variety of parts you have to order from lots of people at once. It just gets kind of annoying having to go through and keep track of each individual thing as you go through a bunch of peoples' stores.

Latest in the City of Heroes Lego series, a micro build Atlas statue:

I'm not 100% pleased with how it turned out.  The pieces I wanted to use for the globe aren't included in the program apparently, which meant the scale overall was wonky as I was trying to make a decent looking man look almost in scale with the globe I ended up having to go with.  So Atlas is too big, the globe is too small, Atlas' body itself is wonky... I'll consider this the prototype for now and try to work on it more later on.  I plan to continue adding onto this to add City Hall and possibly end up with all of Atlas Plaza.

Parts list:
2 x BRICK 1X1 - Medium Stone Grey
1 x BRICK 8X8 - Light Stone Grey
9 x ROOF TILE 1X1X2/3, PC - Medium Stone Grey
1 x ROOF TILE 1X2 45° W 1/3 PLATE - Medium Stone Grey
10 x ROOF TILE 1X2/45° - Medium Stone Grey
2 x ROOF TILE 1X2 INV. - Medium Stone Grey
1 x ROOF TILE 1X3/25° INV. - Medium Stone Grey
1 x ROOF TILE 4X2/18° INV. - Medium Stone Grey
4 x FACET BRICK, TOP 3X3X2 - Medium Stone Grey
4 x FACET BRICK, BOTTOM 3X3X2 - Medium Stone Grey
5 x FLAT TILE 1X1 - Medium Stone Grey
1 x FLAT TILE 1X1 - Light Stone Grey
3 x PLATE 1X1 - Medium Stone Grey
4 x PLATE 1X1 - Light Stone Grey
1 x FLAT TILE 1X2 - Medium Stone Grey
1 x FLAT TILE 1X2 - Light Stone Grey
4 x PLATE 1X2 - Medium Stone Grey
2 x PLATE 1X2 W. 1 KNOB - Medium Stone Grey
1 x PLATE 1X2 W. 1 KNOB - Light Stone Grey
1 x FLAT TILE 1X3 - Light Stone Grey
1 x FLAT TILE 1X4 - Light Stone Grey
1 x FLAT TILE 2X2 - Medium Stone Grey
4 x FLAT TILE 1X6 - Tr. Blue
8 x FLAT TILE 1X6 - Light Stone Grey
1 x PLATE 2X2 W 1 KNOB - Medium Stone Grey
3 x FLAT TILE 2X4 - Light Stone Grey
2 x PLATE 1X6 - Medium Stone Grey
1 x PLATE 4X12 - Light Stone Grey
1 x PLATE 8X16 - Light Stone Grey
1 x PLATE 16X16 - Light Stone Grey
1 x PLATE 2X4X18° - Medium Stone Grey
1 x PLATE 8-EDGED 6X6 - Medium Stone Grey
2 x PLATE 1X1 W. UP RIGHT HOLDER - Medium Stone Grey
1 x ANGULAR PLATE 1.5 BOT. 1X2 1/2 - Medium Stone Grey
1 x MINI HANDLE - Medium Stone Grey
1 x ANGLE PLATE 1X2 / 2X2 - Medium Stone Grey
1 x MINI HEAD - Medium Stone Grey

89 pieces total.

Edit:  To clarify what I meant by 'parts I used not being included'.  I originally had in mind to use the parts that Lego uses to make the planets in their planets series for the Star Wars line.  The sets that include a micro build vehicle, a minifig, and a painted up two-piece planet that serves as the storage case for the parts and can be a sort of ornament.

Nice!

I was looking at screenshots and wonder if using regular sized, all-grey minifigs for the two statues at the corners of City Hall would work.    That would make Atlas & the building about 8 to 10 inches long, maybe?   Also it would make for a very blocky globe.

Atlas I think is the type of thing I'd want to make a 'high-res' lego model out of. Like the gigantic store displays made from thousands of bricks.

Tru dat.  But I don't quite have that much patience.  Probably not enough talent either but saying it's cause of patience keeps my ego intact  ;)

If they make transparent legos, you SO have to do one of the Hamidon... including mitos. :D

Lego doesn't translate to rounded things well as we saw with Atlas.  :P But I could maybe try to make a small one.

Well, you could always go SNOT (Studs Not On Top), which is a common way to make medium-sized lego spheres like this one: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Lego-Ball/ .  Though it'd probably be a bit annoying to set up in LDD.  I haven't played with it in a long while, so I'm not sure what's in the current parts list.  There's the 10 x 10 x 4 Octagonal Canopy ( http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2598 ), but that only ever came in tan or transparent colors, and counted as a windscreen. :/

There are several globes and spheres available for download at the Lego Designer site (http://ldd.lego.com/en-us/gallery/).    For example, my poor attempt at Atlas. (http://i.imgur.com/OwNoL6Q.png)

Few small updates today.

I'm still working on the PPD Drone.  Got a couple ideas on how to make it better but will have to wait and see how they turn out.  Recluse is about as good as he's going to get given the medium.  I just have no idea how to make 8 articulated legs on the back of a minifig.

Ouroboros portal, Aspect of the Pillar of Ice and Flame, and the first face you see in Ouroboros: The Pilgrim.

I have a few things started but aren't quite close to completion.  A lot of my work is based on when I get moments of inspiration on how to make something work.  I've got an Arachnos Toxic Tarantula and a Vanguard HVAS I'm working on, and I've been toiling around with thoughts on how to do a Longbow Flier.

I honestly think a lot of this would be a lot easier if I were able to use pieces from Mega Bloks, too, like their sloped bricks with studs that Lego has nothing similar to.

For Recluse's arms, you may want to look at using the octagonal 2x2 bar frame plate ( http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=75937 ) or two of the 1x2 angled handles plate ( http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=92692 ) for the backpack, which would provide you with enough attachment points.  For the arms themselves, the mechanical arms ( http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=30377 , http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=59230 ) may be worth checking out, if they're in LDD.
