I don't know about you, but certain songs make me think of City of. On the night of August 31st, when I read the announcement that City of was closing I could get "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" by Pink out of my head.
When "Daylight" by Maroon 5 came out in November (like, maybe two weeks before CoH closed?) I remembered I almost started crying because it made me think of that final night that would be coming all too soon. I also associate Pink's "Try" with the closure and listened to it a lot that night. :/ As the final hours became minutes and a couple of my friends were with me (the one who introduced me to the game was on with me), I got the request of "Skyfall" which... also seemed appropriate for what was happening. Now all of these songs have become part of my game experience, and when I hear them I think of Paragon.
I was just curious if anyone else had that type of song(s). If you do, what are they and why do they bring you back?
Any song used in any CoH MV I like.
Bonnie Tyler's "Holding out for a Hero"
Evenescense's "Bring Me to Life"
Then there's one that I wished someone used for a closure video. RHCP's "Under the Bridge"
It's hard to believe
That there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe
That I'm all alone
At least I have her love
The city she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry
All these things i hate- Bullet for my valentine
Enter Sandman-Metallica
Chop Suey-System of a Down
Behind Empty Walls- Serg Tanakin
Spiders-System of a Down
"Avatar" by the Guild is one that does it for me. Samuraiko's CoH version was the first time I'd ever heard of The Guild, let alone that they had a song. To this day I prefer Michelle's take on it over the original. I listen to the song all the time, and every single time I picture that video while it's playing.
"Skullcrusher Mountain" by Jonathan Coulton is another. The first time I'd ever heard of him was during a Cape Radio broadcast, and that's what they played. I like a fair bit of his stuff now, and half the time when I'm listening to anything of his my mind drifts back to standing in line at a costume contest, listening to the Cape or Radio Paragon and chatting with the other contestants.
"The Drinking Song" by Moxy Fruvous. There was this one player who had started livestreaming a CoH Lets Play late last summer. Zwillinger even stopped by his channel and gave him a free Water Blast code, and put up his Twitch channel on the official Facebook page. A few days after that we got the announcement, and at one point he played that song on his Twitch stream. I don't think many people had ever heard it before, but I had the album and always liked it, it's very powerful. To hear it right then, completely out of the blue and when it was so, so appropriate... well it choked me up a good bit. And now, even though I don't listen to it very much, occasionally the lyrics will pop into my head, and it takes me straight back there to his Twitch stream. But on the good days... like the time Zwill made his surprise appearance, and danced the Robot as a giant Warwalker... and the time a handful of us were watching him run his new water blast character through the starting arcs.
Oh, and there's this one Guns N' Roses song I keep singing to myself, but I changed around the lyrics a little bit:
"Take me down to Paragon City, where the girls are green and the grass is pretty!
Oh won't you please take me home... yeah yeah"
End of the world as we know it - REM
Eighth day - Hazel O'Connor
are the two that came to mind
I forgot to add that I did a parody of "I left my Heart in San Fransisco" right after it closed and that song also reminds me of it. :/
A song that always reminds me of Paragon city is one of Queen's most epic. In fact, the lyrics seem even more appropriate since the shutdown.
Empty Spaces, what are we living for?
Abandoned Places, I guess we know the score.
On and on, Does anybody know what we are looking for.
Another hero? Another mindless crime.
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime.
Hold the line. Does anybody want to take it anymore?
The show must go on.
I'll let freddie and the boys take it from here for those of you who might not know it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J1FmJzuhPU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J1FmJzuhPU)
Songs from you tube video tributes for COH, "Always a Good Time" and "The Parting Glass" I will ALWAYS associate with COX.
Good Time - Feat. Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen - Always a good song to make me smile as I remember the good memories of the game. Many thanks to ArtemisAngel1980 for making that video.
Both songs that Leandro used in his video 'City of Heroes Remains'.
City of Heroes by David Allen Baker. This song may as well have been written specially for the game. Not only is it titled the same but the lyrics themselves just fit so perfectly.
Cities in Dust. Any version. (Personally prefer the version by The Everlove that was used in a trailer for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron)
LA Song by Christian Kane.
And many many many others...
Tori Amos - A Sorta Fairytale
'Superman'........REM
I also came in to say "Good Time", because of that very video. I can't hear it without seeing the video in my head. My eidetic memory does that sort of thing...
And the mention of "City of Heroes" is also true. It's like he played the game, then went out and wrote the song.
I believe there is a "Very own Personal Super villain" song out there that a friend always liked, but I can't remember by who. -.-
I had several characters that I loved Powerman 5000's "Super Villain". It was especially great during a Mayhem mission.

I think the song you were looking for is 'personal arch villain' by one of our own, Ebon Brooks.

An oldie, but a goodie - Theme from "Greatest American Hero"
Look at what's happened to me,
I can't believe it myself,
Suddenly, I'm up on thop of the world,
It shoulda been somebody else.
Believe it or not I'm walking on air,
Never thought I would feel so free,
Flying away on a wing and a prayer,
Who could it be?
Believe it or not, it's just me!

That song played a lot that day, it hooked onto my brain as well. Except it had staying power for me, making me feel sad again right up until the last day.
As I was going through my characters, doing the long cataloging project I kept listening to Sail by AWOLNATION. Now anytime I hear the song I find myself emotionally back in that sad time. I still listen to it though as it is a wonderful song.
This by Van Halen:

This by the Who:

I used to play these daily as I moved through the City.
"Parting Glass" and others that were used for tear-jerking tribute videos.
the "Superman" march, "The Flying Sequence", "Greatest American Hero" theme and all the others.
and a song which came out in '97, but which I only heard toward the end, on the Cape - Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)". It really says it all, I think, and never fails to reduce me to tears.
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right,
I hope you had the time of your life.
So take the photographs and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right,
I hope you had the time of your life.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right,
I hope you had the time of your life.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right,
I hope you had the time of your life.
(I did. And it was. Every moment.)
There was a time when all I wanted to do was learn how to Demo Record because I really wanted to make CoH music videos. Certain songs just immediately expressed themselves in my imagination.
Bring Me To Life by Evanescence - I always picture this with Scirocco and Ice Mistral singing this to each other. They start out singing it alone, unaware of the other's feelings, until they're eventually singing it face to face. Of course, after the new Dark Astoria story lines, MIstral gets eaten by a giant Mario-World Piranha Plant at the end of the song... kinda anti-climactic.
Black Hole Sun by SoundGarden - Before the song starts we see a hero team getting team wiped by a legion of Arachnos. Longbow show up but too late to do anything but save one lone hero, who is holding his dead wife and sobbing when the first notes of the song begin. The hero blames both villains and the tardy heroes for the death of his love. His power is to summon singularities. During the song he wanders like a zombie; deep in depression through Atlas Park, through Cap Au Diable... When the chorus starts he looks up at that initial pause, then opens the rift directly above his head. The black hole sucking in people, destroying buildings and terrain, as he stands there staring dully at it. At the very end of the song War Witch and Ghost Widow, being immaterial and unaffected by his power, approach from either side. Tight shot of them kissing each of his cheeks at the same time, draw back to reveal they've sunk their hands into his chest and stilled his heart. He falls to the ground at the same moment everything that had been shooting towards the hole does as well.
Bang A Gong by Power Station - Definitely the Power Station version, no others need apply. This is just a raunch song in my head. Picture all the female heroes and villains of the game walking down center stage, hip-strutting, and swinging on a pole. Yeah, yeah... I know...
Powerful stuff on the Black Hole Sun one, man. Dang. Regarding this bit though:

Check out the debriefing at the end of the last mission in the arc (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Dream_Doctor#Finale:_The_World.27s_Final_Gambit). Spoiler Alert:
'The Adventure' by Angels and Airwaves...doesn't fit CoH any better than that, if you ask me.... :)
I've associated this track w/ CoH for evah:

Lyrics excerpts (with a couple lines bolded which will make the association obvious):
Dry your eyes and quietly bear this pain with pride
For heaven shall remember the silent and the brave
And promise me they will never see, the fear within our eyes
(my eyes are closed)
We will give strength to those who still remain
So bury fear, for fate draws near
And hide the signs of pain
With noble acts, the bravest souls
Endure the heart's remains
Discard regret, that in this debt
A better world is made
That children of a newer day might remember
And avoid our fate
Hold your head up high-for there is no greater love
Think of the faces of the people you defend
And promise me, they will never see the tears within our eyes
Although we are men, with mortal sins, angels never cry
And in the fury of this darkest hour
I will be your light
A lifetime for this destiny
For I am Winter born
And in this moment..I will not run
It is my place to stand
We few shall carry hope
Within our bloodied hands
Girl all the bad guys want always reminded me of Pysche and Ghost Widow to an extent.

Ha. You've reminded me of a few I wanted to make (and still could, I suppose, due to the magic of demos).
Menken and Zippel, "Go the Distance" (Disney's
Hercules) - a hero's journey, starting in Atlas Park and ascending to truly Olympian (or Praetorian) heights.
John Williams, "The Flying Sequence" (
Superman) - a night-time tour of Steel Canyon, with a loop around the statue in Blyde Square taking the place of lady Liberty.
Garry Schyman, "Praan" (
Where the Hell is Matt (2008)) - heroes, villains, and others dancing in all the zones of Paragon, the Rogue Isles, and beyond.

I've associated this track w/ CoH for evah:
Quicksilver is just a fun song all-around.
I'd had the Duet mix of Puscifer's "The Humbling River (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0YxeTjFn70)" on my play-list for ages, but never associated it with City until one of the demo-makers used it. Now I can't NOT think of that video and our game every time it comes up. Which it does pretty often since it's in my favorites mix.
I have three songs to forever remind me of City of Heroes:
Protectors of the Earth (Two Steps from Hell) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASj81daun5Q)
Just epic.
Derezzed (Daft Punk) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4dUiBfMQVU)
For beating up bad guys, especially in a nightclub.
Perfect Dark - Institute Menu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woXJcw0iGIA)
Just a cool song that I feel fits City of Heroes.
Mama said knock u out...LL Cool J. That is the theme song I associate with the triumphant return of Paragon City.

I like your style!
Now when we get there, I'm gonna have to toggle on Super Jump and play "Jump Around" (cause we brought them a House of Pain... booyah)
