Title: Music Rant
Post by: Maressa on April 04, 2013, 05:08:20 PM
Ok, so one of my favorite songs right now is Pink, Nate Ruess' song Just Give Me a Reason.

I need to complain about the music video. The song is a lovely duet, then they go and have random skinny tattooed guy all over Pink. I know, he's her real life husband but he's not the one singing. In my opinion Pink and Nate Ruess should be the only ones in the video and it bugs me so much that every time I hear the song or see the video it's my first thought. Not, aww this is such a nice song.

Yeah, I try not to watch music videos anymore for just that reason. They can ruin a good song for me more often than not. It's hard enough these days to find artists that actually care about the music, and out of the ones who do, it seems like that's where so many of them draw the line. It's like once the song itself is recorded and put together, everything after that is fair game. "So what if my videos, merchandising, and stage shows make me look like a hypocrite and a horrible role model? I did my part. That song was beautiful."

It seems like 80% of anything popular uses the same recipe these days:

"Smash Hit"

- Pour one part "producers who'll capitalize on anything to generate buzz" into an attractive glass.
- Add one part "artists who don't care enough to preserve artistic integrity," and stir.
- Keep saying "Everyone else loves this" until people believe it, then serve at room temperature.
- Repeat until nobody returns your calls anymore.

I agree and disagree with this.  While some artists are pure garbage a lot of people think that just because they don't like the music it isn't real music.  Electronic music gets this a lot.  People honestly believe EDM is made by someone sitting at a computer and pushing a button and then the sounds create/arrange them self into a song.  In all actuallity it takes most electronic music producers about 50 hours to finish a single song between creating the sounds (which takes HOURS) and then you still have to write a melody as well a rhythm section, not to mention the hours and hours of mastering and fine tuning (Cuting frequencies takes time).  I use to write piano songs 2 hours before class with no piano I just knew enough music theory to through it together.  But the recipe for music has been the same for centuries.  Stairway to heaven, the intro in that song I just 1 chord with a descending bass.  That was done all the time in the 30-50's by jazz musicians.  The 12 bar blues has been used for over 100 years by now at this point.  Yet at some point every musician has done a 12 bar blues song.  There is a formula called 1,4,5 and 1,6,2,5 and it is used by virtually every musician in every genre at some point.  Even back in the day of Mozart and others like that they would use musical formulas (Rondo's, A-tonal music etc etc) In fact you can't even copy right Rhythm sections.  Only melodies and the way they harmonize with the chords.  This is because there is only so many chords you can use,in a single key.  Even if you get super crazy like jazz there is formulas for modulation and key changing.  Very few musicians "break" the mold.  And even the ones who do use formulas they just tweak them in a way most people wouldn't think of.  There is only 12 notes.  Its about how your phrase them and what dynamics you use(loud, soft, fast, slow, passionate, scared)  Eric Clapton(One of my favorite guitar players) Uses an extremely common solo technique that people have been using sense the early 1900's.  The reason I say this is because its not so much the complexity/uniqueness of a song that makes it good.  Its that it does something for you, if you feel something then it is working.  It doesn't have to be political or deep or wise it just has to ring true to you.  Make you feel good.  Except for Lil Wayne.  He is just plain terrible.  And I mean that objectively

Sorry, I wasn't being clear. I do that a lot. :P  I wasn't talking about the music itself being bad, but everything surrounding the music. The videos, the stage shows, the artists' behavior (both onstage and off). For so many of them, the music itself is cheapened by everything else they do. Sometimes one song will even be contradicted by another that the same artist puts out later. It's really difficult (for me at least) to find any respect for someone that inconsistent and, in some cases, morally deficient.

I can enjoy the song itself, I do that all the time. I generally avoid taking it any further though. I used to watch all the videos and look up info about the band, but these days I find looking closer just makes me stop wanting to listen. And I don't want to stop listening to the music, that's the part I like! :D
