Title: Flying under the radar
Post by: themamboman on March 29, 2013, 09:26:30 PM
I've seen a few references to a replacement server project (or something near enough) that would allow gameplay again.

I've also seen where a few people have asked for details and they were told that it was not related to the SEGS effort and that information wasn't being given out because 1) there still wasn't enough known to have any kind of progress meter, and 2) that they were trying to keep info on the down-low in order to not get any negative attention from NCSoft.

Out of curiosity, if keeping a low profile is needed due to fear of legal action during the development stage, then how would a working server replacement ever be released so that people could play it?  Would it be by invite-only, or some other method of limiting visibility?

Please, no flames, geniune curiosity here.

Thanks,
TMM

Oh, you'll get flames...

... Calgary Flames, mwuhaha!

Anyway, while potential legal ramifications may be the issue, it's also possible that they're keeping a low profile to avoid community attention until they've got something they're ready to show, to avoid disappointing anyone should the project fall apart (hey, never know when real life stuff could put stuff on hold).

If I were to work on a project that would have some company's legal department all a-twitchin', I imagine I'd want it to be completely, 100% finished and then released to the public through underground channels. I mean, the company can't send C&Ds to *the entire general public*, can they?

I dunno.  That Nicaraguan Prince with billions of dollars needing some place to hide his money seems to be able to get his message spread around pretty quickly.

But yeah I suspect they're just wanting to make sure they're done so it makes it harder on NCSoft to stop them.

If you build the server emu and then share it out freely to the public so that basically there are HUNDREDS of them..........well it makes it difficult to kill it off. They issue a cease and desist - and you do on that server.

Paraguay does not play the IP game other countries try and enforce.

Never under estimate the power of the Dark Side.

Remember that it's also a matter of traceability (or lack of it) of the emulator's authors.

It would be silly to identify oneself in the source code of something that is meant to remain secret. (-:

Silly, yes.  But I've known some programmers with pretty big egos.

I'd take it one step further, just for paranoia's sake: not leaving any readily apparent connection between the software and its' authors. But that might just be my - ie paranoid - point of view.

How can there be less of a connection than no connection at all? Be specific.

Right.
How many unofficial CoH-compatible servers are known to be in development right now?
One is SEGS and one is collaborated on by several known users of these forums.

Now ask yourself one simple question:
If a functional emulator appears that is not SEGS, who will be the obvious suspects to anyone who looks deep enough?
And thus targets for any frivolous legal threats from NCSoft, no matter if warranted or not?

Then again: I already said I am paranoid. *shrug*

So let me see, you fear that someone might post a server code that unnamed people might have built that might post on this board.
Then they might get sent cease and desist letters for posting the code anonymously to a shareware site?
Then if hundreds of other players build servers in countries that have no IP agreements - there might be a problem?

Not seeing an issue here...........

Titan Network has no involvement with any server implementation projects. That there are members of Titan Network who are involved with such a project has no meaning. I'm sure most of them are also members of other communities, but those communities can't be held responsible either. You can't shut down the entire internet just because you believe someone who uses it might be doing something you don't want them to do. And even in the event the individuals were identified, no legal action can be taken except against the network that hosts the alleged infringing content.

So by all means, rejoice and cheer them on all you want. NCsoft can't come after you.

Ok. I'm not sure of an easy way to ask or put thus. It might nit even be relevant and might be rats running around in my head but let's suppose someone is actively trying to shine the spotlight on SEGS? And as bonus round, trying to connect specific forums as aiding in the distribution of copyright material like how marvel came after cox even though it was against their rules and didn't actually create the toons in question? Although ncsoft was able to come to.some sort of agreement I don't want to see someone like SEGS get buried or someone else that creating something for the people that want to play cox again. What should I or can I do to twart said person? I think small chance of something happening but that didn't stop us now did it from succeeding. Thus given its possibility what can u do?

Would a bat suffice? The animal or sports equipment I can make both work. :D
