Title: CoX Artwork
Post by: corvus1970 on December 03, 2012, 05:10:00 PM
Do any of you have any CoX-based artwork you wish to share? Whether it be something you drew or created via photoshop, or had commissioned, please feel free to share it here!

Here's an illustration I did about 6 years ago featuring my main, Avatar of RA, in one of his early costumes:

Oh I like that! The fire is very dynamic. I've been commishing lots since the announcement. Funnily enough, before the announcement, I never would commish anything. Too busy RP'ing! I'll post a select few here, but I'm sure that the links will lead to the rest.

Here's a very recent one I like a lot. It's my character Hellgirl, who wasn't actually a demon, but instead a demon tainted human. She got mixed up in the wrong things years ago, and ended up like this.
http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/335/b/1/hellgirl_by_hugohugo_by_perfidus-d5mrcvh.jpg

And here's another one. This is of my main character, Raine Heartfall, who I've played consistently since April of 2008 (Though I've been in game since 2006.) She went from a 16 year old brat to a confident 20 year old vixen! Who is still a brat.
http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/302/3/b/raine_heartfall_by_battlewraith_by_perfidus-d5jcx4s.png

But yus. There's more on my dA page, perfidus.deviantart.com

I imagine I'll continuously get more and more arts now that the game is gone. But hey, I'm so into it now that even if we get it back, I'll keep commishin'

I have had a bunch of commissions done -- http://kellzilla.deviantart.com/gallery/5316912

I'm actually missing two more that I haven't put up yet, a piece of Agge and a piece of my husband's Sparkarella, looking like they're launching attacks - which you could theoretically piece together into a duo shot and show them attacking each other! Wee! (Sparkarella [energy/elec brute] would totally squish my poor emp/arch defender but the image is cool.)

My favorite is this one:
...which the gentleman did for me when I helped lead an eight-man Old Positron a few years ago. Oh my word, that was a long and arduous task full of death and hilarity. But I got arts out of it! (I did it to do it, because it'd been years since I'd done a full-team Posi, not because I was promised art - because I wasn't!)

Good stuff there Perfidus, and thank you!

I've added you to my watch list on DA. My gallery is at: http://corvus1970.deviantart.com/

Aggelakis, that's a really good piece, and there's some more I like on your DA.

I've never gotten commissions of any of my own CoH characters, largely because when I get commissions, its always of Thanos *lol*

If either of you ever want a commission from me, just hit me up :)

Well now I feel like posting one more! To help this page thrive. I love all the arts that have been posted thus far, and that full Unbound SG pic that maxxrpg posted is immaculate - seriously, if you have the cash, and the references to know the colors, pay to get that thing colored! Honestly, that linework is great and especially now, it needs some color.

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/323/7/f/zaxa_by_hugohugo_by_perfidus-d5li70h.jpg

Here is Zaxa, my alien girl. I always wanted to make a great sci-fi character in game. None of them worked out until her. See my channel for what she looks like colored! You may also realize this art as what my avatar here is based from. :D

I would color them but I'm old and blues and greens are hard to tell apart.  I'll make copies and have some of my art students give it a shot after I ink them.

I've commissioned artwork of my characters. Some are posted in my deviantArt gallery (http://quarriossoul.deviantart.com/gallery/26815823) and some/most are in my favorites folder (http://quarriossoul.deviantart.com/favourites/41331233). Some of my favorite ones, though, are...

Malleable Mechanic: AdamMasterman (http://quarriossoul.deviantart.com/favourites/41331233#/d34hv7m) / +colors GreenLantern24601 (http://quarriossoul.deviantart.com/favourites/41331233#/d5bziub)
Kid Draconian: ivanev (http://quarriossoul.deviantart.com/gallery/26815823#/d593pfp)
National Capital: Juggertha (http://quarriossoul.deviantart.com/favourites/41331233#/d549cd0)
Action Trooper: ev1ct (formerly Narukamei) (http://quarriossoul.deviantart.com/favourites/41331233#/d5aghzc)
Titan Torch: AdamMasterman (http://quarriossoul.deviantart.com/favourites/41331233#/d4o3p07)

's all for now. Wish I had more, but money gets to be an issue. I lurk for kiribans, giveaways and stuff.
(Also I can +watch more people? Does Max have a dA? Am I already watching it? I want to if I'm not.)

Anyway, here's something I've done after I heard the news on Black Friday. It's my main, Killfrenzy, in his latest incarnation:

What's stopping you? Almost everything I've commished, I commished after the announcement, and I'm waiting on four more now that I ordered after the shutdown.

And there are plenty of great artists that are very reasonable in prices. Generally it's only Americans that overcharge.

What's stopping me is unemployment. Finances are stretched tightly enough right now to make commissioning art an indulgence that I just can't manage. (And a lot of my art ideas are complex enough that they'd probably take significant time to do. I could be wrong, though.)

Often that's because of a variety of economic factors at play. Generally speaking I take a lot less than many illustrators, and probably a lot less than I should.

Still, there are indeed some who way overcharge.

That's completely understandable Samuraiko, but the crux of my statement remains true. When you do have the money, there's nothing stopping you. What you said before kind of made it seem like finality. Like because the game is gone you can't do it - and that's not true.

And I realize that corvus, absolutely. I've noticed the trends, and am worldly enough to understand some things. Not that I'm implying you think I didn't know things.

Oh, as long as there are COH artists around, once I get back on my financial feet, I fully intend to get more art made. With my game temporarily displaced, I gotta get my fix somehow. At the very least, I MUST get the cover for TCOSR III done. Still wish I could have gotten David Nakayama to do it. :(

Nakayama used to do commishes. He may begin again now that he's only working for a company that does Facebook games. I can't imagine that pays too well, it's not like he's working for Zynga or Rovio.

If he does, I fully intend to commish him. It'd be the ultimate tribute to my characters, to have someone who did official art for my game, do art specifically of my characters. And yes he has a dA which I'm sure you're aware of too, where he posted the arts he did for the Who Will Die arcs, among other things.

Let's tone down the sniping a little here. Comments like "generally only Americans overcharge" isn't warranted. We're all art appreciators here so let's do a little art appreciation.
Title: Re: CoX Artwork
Post by: Perfidus on December 14, 2012, 08:26:26 AM
I am American, Agge. Born and raised. There's no sniping going on here and I think you're over moderating. I was just pointing out a fact, there was no negativity attached to it. You go take a look around Deviantart, compare people who do commissions. Compare the prices between those in USA to those not. You'll quickly find that you can have work done by someone in America for $20, that you can have done from someone equally talented from somewhere like Thailand or South America, for $5.

Corvus nailed it. It's not that we americans are money hungry, it's economic factors between countries. And I was just expressing this.

I'm not trying to undermine you. If this post is inappropriate, feel free to delete it, I'm just explaining it to you and hoping you see that there's no racial or country-based stereotyping going on here.

Registered because of this thread. I've commissioned a bit of work, and will wind up getting more I'm sure.

I'll start off with my most beloved character, 1 Up. She had some virtual reality gaming equipment that accidentally started affecting reality.

I got a few more of her, but I think they're too racy for this site.  :o

My three girls. All done by hugohugo (http://hugohugo.deviantart.com). There's a lot of his stuff posted in this thread already (wahhh I'm seeing things but I recognize Perfidus' avatar and 1Up) . He's amazing at capturing a character's personality, has a great range of styles and his work comes at a modest price.

... You go take a look around Deviantart, compare people who do commissions. Compare the prices between those in USA to those not. You'll quickly find that you can have work done by someone in America for $20, that you can have done from someone equally talented from somewhere like Thailand or South America, for $5.

Quote from: Perfidus on December 14, 2012, 04:58:18 AM
And there are plenty of great artists that are very reasonable in prices. Generally it's only Americans that overcharge.

Excuse me, as an artist who primarily makes their living well... doing art, I take extreme exception to this. It is my job to know what to charge for a fair price in regard to skill, product and time invested (for myself). and I can pretty much guarantee that most freelancers without geegobs of followers, who don't also work for a company and don't have a brand/product attached to their name undercharge. (Pick your reason combo.)

That includes your American artists charging $20 for that thing you can get elsewhere for $5. Guess what? Those $5 artists are SEVERELY undercharging as well.

Maybe they don't know better, maybe they see the false downward trend and follow it, maybe they are just doing it for fun and taking minor compensation, maybe an emergency came up and they're having a firesale (which other clients try to use to force lower charges from other artists), maybe they are young and new to the commission scene and taking lots of lowball offers to build a base. None of that makes it right, but it happens. You can argue an exception for reason 3, I get that, but it shouldn't be factored into regular wages.

Here's the thing about undercharging; it makes it more difficult for those who know our worth to make a living wage. When some artist charges $5 for 3 hours of work, the artist who needs $20 for 1 hour of work appears to be overcharging when the skill is comparable. But it's a false perception.

If your boss came to you (assuming you don't work for yourself) and asked you to work for less than minimum wage with no tips, what would your reaction be? (Rather negative, I imagine.) So when you (or anyone) gleefully talk about getting great cheap $5 art I think about the former question and wonder why it's acceptable for an artist but no other profession.

Hello syrusb,

I don't know if you read some of the replies to those comments or not, but we did touch on some of those issues, though not in any depth.

You are correct in all of your points, and I would suspect that undercharging is far more common than overcharging. Its just not as visible, and as I said earlier, I tend to undercharge myself.

Anyway, back to posting some art! :D

And having gotten art from her (enough to make a video with it!), I can say she was well worth every dollar I paid.

Still need to have her do a full-on color rendition of one of those shots, too, now that I think of it. Especially in light of the gaming going away.

My 2 inf on prices... I don't mind paying more for a commission if its quality work. (which is subjective I guess...)

Am I willing to pay something like $50 to an artist who presents lazily drawn wannabe anime doodles with wonky anatomy more fit for the margins of a notebook than a portfolio? No.

Will I pay $50 for something that clearly shows the artist has worked hard through the years to get where they are in skill and still working to improve? You betcha!

My work (http://xievvy.deviantart.com/) for example... would you pay $20 for it? I wouldn't, not even $5. I hope I achieve a level of skill someday where I can look at my work and say "Yeah, I'd pay money for that" but right now... I don't deserve to take money.

Yes, I think you're taking exception and maybe even offense to what is a non-issue, syrusb. There was no deeper meaning to my statements, no ill will harbored toward artists who charge upwards of fifty dollars for a piece, or even $175 for a professional level piece. I was just speaking factually, and never touched on the underlying issues behind those facts. What you say is absolutely true. It's really just artists choice, and economic issues and standards of the various countries.

But what Xieveral said is also true. There are artists out there who just overestimate the quality of their own work, and will charge you $30 for a misproportioned sketch with messy lines and no color at all. But those weren't the people I was talking about, and they happen in every country.

Gonna share some of my Syrusb art!

My Grimms! The ones I had at the time, one day I'm going to get this big portrait done of all the ones I had in the end.

Red: Riley Grimm
Blue: Ryan Grimm (her twin)
Purple: Charlotte Grimm (little sister, deceased, but that didn't keep her down)
Yellow:  Sol Grimm (Praetorian counterpart, peacebringer)

Erik and Frieda Grimm, Riley's parents, back when they first met/teamed up. I apologize for Frieda's costume, she was meant to evoke one of those dark villainnesses (with a side of sexy thief. Not a genre I was familiar with, really) and had a much more sensible costume in-game when I played her. Of course, she was also in her fifties then and didn't feel like getting butt frostbite then.  Erik der Grimmige and Nachtfrau were their names,

Chibis of Busy Bee, Ryan Grimm, and Miss Popular.

My mad scientist trio!

Dr. Ono, Dr. Velazquez, and Professor Berry.

Advertising poster for my supergroup which was meant to be an apartment complex for heroes.

Featuring: Desert Diamond, Geothunder, and  Sailor Mutilation (Sailor Mutilation was not my character, she was the character of a friend of mine)

Dr. Dapper! Another of my mad scientists, she specialized in instructing Mad Archaeology in Paragon University's Mad Science department.

Icon of my reptile girl Vanessa Blade.

And here she is before she grew up  and went all reptile like her dad.

My very favourite:

One thing I used to do is take a sketchbook and screenshots of my characters to my local comic con every year. I'd wander around Artists Alley where I would often get a variety of sketches done.

Then I moved and lost the sketchbook in the shuffle somewhere. :gonk:

I did scan a few of them at some point though. This is DarkGlare, a Dark Melee / Regen Scrapper, the first character I ever created in CoH.

I looove getting artwork of my characters. Maybe a bit too much.

But I usually don't tend to have the resources to fund it. Tear. That said, this one was for free! Argent Girl wore this as her secondary costume for awhile, and while she never posed like this IC, I'm sure she would for the right cause (and this should still be SFW, apologies if considered too risque!

And this one was a pre-shiny version of Sarah, also free:

This was art done by Agent Canada as part of an art exchange with Argent taking on her once captor, Madam Moon (though the plot never got to reveal her name, sigh!):

Here's some art of Argent along with two of her friends, Crow Call and Scarlet Warden also used as my avatar:

This was drawn again as a freebie as a sort of going away present for Sarah. If/when we get CoH back I might grab more art, but I just don't have the cash to indulge commissions often.

Additionally I did a bit of sprite art for her as well that I used as her Guild Portal avatar. Complete with the icon for her "Argent Spark" power:

I finished this one just a few hours ago.

When participating in the fArt competition I preferred to stick to the signature characters, as  most other participants seemed to prefer using their own. Hey, I get that. But I like working in canon where possible. Anyway..

This is because of a conversation that started on facebook. The City of Villains signatures, Disneyfied!

If you read up on the lore, Scirocco is a reluctant-ish villain...more a rogue/vigilante...the devs were thinking of pushing him on a redemption path eventually. I really, really wanted to see that happen. Scirocco is one of my favorite 'sig' characters.

One of these years, I need to have syrusb do a pic of Andrea Blake I'd always envisioned, where she's in her schoolgirl "Do You Want to Date My Avatar" outfit, sitting, with her legs crossed, on one of BAB's biceps as he flexes. (Yes, she is that small compared to him - the top of her head barely reached his belt, IIRC.)

And of course, it MUST be chibi style.

Maybe in February when we have a bit of cash coming in...

Let's be honest; just about anyone is tiny compared to BABs.

Not that that's a bad thing.

Here's my character Aeka. I find this art perfect, the artist listened not only to my descriptions but also paid attention to the reference pics. I love this. :D

Some commissions of my homage character: Rainbow Bryte. This toon was really special to me, and through RPing her naive, innocent outlook on life, helped me get through some really hard times.

In case anyone is wondering, no, I didn't request an upskirt shot.  :P Regardless, RockDeadman picked the right color for her bikini piece.

The original piece I asked for, with both her homage costume AND the one I designed after the original character got hit with the Generic hammer.

A lot of great art here.  I know I said this elsewhere, but I'm so glad this community is pumping out art even after the closure.

Heck, before the announcement I had maybe.. one art that I'd actually paid for? Since the announcement, like... thirty. >.> But yes I concur.

Also, hello! I remember you from the original forums. I remember your character and all the arts you had for her too. You should post a few of your favorites here. :)

I've got quite a few commissioned works of my characters.  Most of them can be found on my DeviantArt page. (http://riskovinsheen.deviantart.com/gallery/)

First off, though, I'd like to share this one:

Courtesy of the Real World Hero charity auction and the artist @Treees.  Since I won it for charity and it was nearing the holidays I wanted to have my sweetest character Snow Panther giving a gift to a young child.  I love how it turned out.

Other awesome art pieces:

Light of the Phoenix by Wolvtrune
(https://images.weserv.nl/?url=fc08.deviantart.net%2Ffs71%2Fi%2F2010%2F006%2Fb%2F0%2FLotP_Doodlez_by_Wolvtrune_by_RiskoVinsheen.jpg)

Dust Walker by xJoeDx

The Palladium Sentry 2 year anniversary edition mock comic cover by Taclobanon

Snow Panther by artauxeo  (Got this commissioned when the Palladium Sentry closed down after more than 3 years.  Snow Panther was the second longest running member of the SG, behind only the creator/leader himself, Knight Sentinel.  In this piece she's desperately clinging to Knight's sword after his disappearance, unable to let go of the past.)

Haha awesome!  Glad I could help hook someone up with some great art, even if it was indirectly. ;)  Joe does some awesome work.  I first commissioned art from him a long time back when he was having a buy 3 get 1 free deal.  I've been meaning to commission more art but money's pretty tight, but I'm very tempted when I do get the money to spare to go with Joe again.

I also feel the need to give a nod to one of my absolute favorite artists to work with, Wolvtrune (http://wolvtrune.deviantart.com/), who did this piece and many others in my gallery.

Snow Panther and her younger brother Pyre Tiger.

Here is the Peacemaker again.  Just received the final full color image from Brandon McKinney. This has to be my new favorite piece of art and a nice commemorative farewell to the character I enjoyed for 7+ years.

Doh! I forgot all about this thread after I saw it the first time.  :P
Better late than never getting back here to post these, I guess...

Melissa Uran did these two drawings for me awhile back.

The first is Ashirion and Ty'Ree (Hero-side scrapper and tank pair).
The second is Grey Kestrel and Red Cardinal (My favorite Rogue stalker and her Adept partner.)

There are some great art work up here and would love to get some done in the near future.

Would it be impolite to ask for some suggestions on who to get commissions from?

Lots of options out there and would like to narrow the field some if possible.

Thanks!

Of course. You'd have to give a price range and preferred style though. :)

great stuff everyone.

Styg - Looks like you have something/someone in mind but a great place for art would be to look over on Deviant Art and look for the City of Heroes group.  You can check the gallery for artist you like and then see if they are open for commission.  It's a great resource for anyone looking for art.

Hey if you're still looking for options you could try the coXso (City Of Heroes Send Off) list.
These are all artists who either played the game extensively, got lots of CoH commissions or both.
They all understand the "City of" universe and know the costume creator very well. http://fav.me/d5hupfx

Also sometimes it helps a lot to see the same character done by a myriad range of different artists to really highlight what you really want.
For that I would suggest the galleries of the largest art collectors like Thors Assassin (Link) (http://thorsassassin.deviantart.com/) Caemgen (Link), (http://kaemgen.deviantart.com/) Katfood (Link) (http://katfood25.deviantart.com/) etc. etc.
If they're doing CoH art you'll most likely find them in one of the artwhores (their word  :P) galleries.
Just a heads up some pieces in there are NSFW.

On a different note here is the latest CoH artz I'm working on.
It's a rough sketch of my next CoXso prize, a villain named Arcturus.
