Title: Paragon City now (don't look)
Post by: Copper Cockroach on December 02, 2012, 04:31:11 PM
Holy *BLEEP*ing *BLEEP*. What used to be Skyway City, as of five minutes ago.

(https://i.imgur.com/H4gIP.jpg) (http://imgur.com/H4gIP)

Synapse: "You MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP! God DAMN YOU! GOD! DAMN! You all to HELLLL!!"

Once again, Leandro making the magic happen here. I'm going to guess that this is based on a "Nuked Skyway City" map meant for the Battalion attack.

At least we know there are some survivors in there...

Man - Skyway City just can't catch a break, can it?

I mean - kinda lost and forgotten by City Planners after the experiment with all the useless overpasses, then the central span being knocked down during the Sutter TF, now this?

(and about that central span - I always thought that a later issue of the game should do away with those bridges and put in a long park area down the center of Skyway. )

That is pretty awesome and sad (as well as a most appropriate chanelling of Charlton Heston).

Synapse: "My God..."

Mynx: *looks around a bit, biting her lip, then spots something and brightens with a bit of forced cheer*  "Oh hey! It's not all bad!"

Synapse: *just gives her a look halfway between incredulous and forlorn*

Mynx: "Look over there, under the intact overpass, the "El Super Mexicano is still there. We can still get tacos!"

Synapse: "..."

Mynx: "mew?"

Looks like LA. lol

No really though, that is a cool pic there and now knid of curious of what other damage these Battalion people would have done to the other zones and if Villain zones would have gotten the same treatment.

Looks like Synapse is saying to Minx. "Dang, I knew it was a bad a idea sending all the heroes to Steel Canyon on my long TF."

Minx-"Yep. Been telling you that for years."

I can SO actually see the conversation between them going exactly like that, too, if it were a comic or something.

You know the destroyed Atlas Park mission map in the Time After Time story arc? El Super Mexicano was still standing in that one as well.

I think we learned where Blue Steel eats lunch.

The War Walls are still up (structurally, can't tell if the shields are or not....drawing distance is too short :P ). Go figure.

That looks a lot like the last mission of the Sutter TF after the Praetorians bombed Skyway.

First it was Overbrook, then Faultline, then New Overbrook. Now it's a wasteland of flooded canyons and smoldering rubble.

Also, was it Fusionette's fault? ;)

These are from Leandro, using demorecords of the zones & characters, modified & arranged via his scripting techniques (the videos for which appear to have been removed from Youtube. Hmmm).

And the event is, unfortunately, the total destruction of Paragon City, Rhode Island.

The scripts I put on Youtube parsed demos that people created while being online, so they are useless now. That's why the instructions went away; they can't be used without being logged in to a server.

I have my own set of scripts to create demos while offline, but those are a bit harder to use. Angelus Animi has been using them because she's very, very, very stubborn, but most people would smash their heads against the wall and give up after 5 minutes with them.

That's too bad. I had recorded a metric ton of files in the hope of being able to use your scripts on them, not realizing they wouldn't work.

Nice work, but I guess it's redundant to say that videos you made are great.

There are a number of pieces of tutorials around. I want to have the best shot at learning how to do it, too, so I'm trying to get everything in one place. Maybe Titan will create a Demoedit forum to consolidate it.

Leandro's right, of course. However, be forewarned that there are a LOT of dead links in the Wiki now, thanks to NCSoft's decision to nuke the forums from orbit. I'm trying to take them out as I find them, but I'm spinning a lot of plates right now.

I'm pretty sure we could run a quick check and find all of the dead links to the forums.  It would just be a very, very long list at this point. :(

Here's the article the screenshots were for: Watching the World End (http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/gamereport/watching_the_world_end_SYqLhSXugwTjmKCWAnVAbJ)

They didn't use all of them, so I might post one or two more to Twitter.

Actually -- and please tell me if there'd be a better place to discuss this -- before the apocalypse the nice people at Archive.org were trying to index the forums. If so, it might make more sense to wait and do a global replace to point all those wiki links from coh.com to whatever the base URL turns out to be for the archive.
Title: Re: Paragon City now (don't look)

A specific discussion about that would be best suited for Wiki Discussion (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/board,67.0.html) down the index a ways.  Short answer: if we can directly link the old posts by just changing the base address, it's an easy task for a bot.

Now that is a sad, sad, if appropriate, article.

Now, I want to rebuild this city after its destruction. We have the tools. We can make movies. Let's do it!

EDIT: Sorry, my official mourning period is over. It's time to be happy with what we still have, and make the most of it. And what we still have is quite a lot, actually: we still have our community, our imagination, and our hope - for many things. We are heroes (and sometimes villains). This is what we do.

(allow me to repost what I posted on FB about the article)

Amazing... *salute*

And though the images of mass destruction of Paragon City are not what I think we feel actually happened to the game world itself -

(I prefer to think of it as spun off into it's own pinched off pocket universe as per the Arcanaville led player/dev event suggested. And that our heroes continue the good fight, just without "My User Dave" looking over their shoulder)

- I do think the images really do give a visceral sense to a reader who might be unfamiliar with City of Heroes just how much pain and sorrow we feel at our home being taken away from us. In that sense those images by Leandro are some amazing heartstring tuggers.
