Hi Titan Network!
I was walking the plains of Norrath when I got a strange parcel dropped to the front of me and on it was a ''Save CoH'' seal that I have never seen before. After opening the letter and reading its contents I couldn't help but be moved emotionally and heart filled with pride about a group of heroic individuals doing everything they can to save their own realm from being yanked out from under them!
So, I left and came here under the instruction and plea of an incognito source who lead me to the game's forums and enjoyable atmosphere (community wise and game wise) which captured my heroic gooshy heart. I have come to lend a small (very small) hand in this fight to save your game and while I'm not taking care of grandpa (who has grown to love peanutbutter and topenade) I'll be focusing my efforts on getting some media attention and magazine coverage (if I can) to your cause. This way it gets the word out further than just the internet and will use my song of good deeds to inspire even the darkest of hearts!
I can't promise to be anything more than a nuisance but together we'll figure this out!
HORRAH HORRAH GOOD TEAM!
LETS SAVE THIS CITY!
Don't worry Tony, I'll make sure the Giants don't step on anyone unless they're villains.
Sincerely,
Fansy The ''Famous'' Bard
Woot! We have a bard now to spread the word!
Welcome, and let us know the results!
It's never been a better time to be a good guy :)
ETA: Google-fu...oh my you /are/ famous, aren't you?
Thank you very much for your gracious words, and for your support!
Thank you very much!
The ultimate survivor from the ultimate surviving realm has come to support us! Your presence in our Oasis is most welcome :)
Our cause touches other dimensions! Other worlds! Our combined will has pierced the heavens themselves! Together, we cannot fail!
Welcome aboard and thank you for joining the fight.
You're most welcome! Now lets keep our cheer hats on and get to work!
Welcome! And Well-come!
Thank you so much!
Hey, any attention you can "train" to us would be good. Thank you for your aid and welcome aboard!
Go-Go Good Team!
I'm posting this here also, just to double the message for us good guys!
( and you evil deed do'ers & newts.. )
I'm currently working on getting in touch with a few of the article editors for some of the more prestigious gaming corps but I can't do it alone! If there's any interest I'll need some back up from the Good Team with emails sent to Game Informer, FUN, Nintendo Power (Believe me they'll eat this story up), and PC Gamer. If your google-fu isn't strong I'll throw in some links. Screen shots/Gamer stories are always important.
I'll be calling them as well as sending in e-mails but what you feel is appropriate is up to, well, you! However the Good Team never takes on a weak challenge, and stomps out any chance of missing a connection!
Even if this doesn't work to save the game it will forever be told in lore and history, stapled in pages of ink sent to virtually every household about a community who refused to go down without a fight!
That, heroes, is the answer to Elliot's question on Massively the other day. We are fighting not just to win here, but to set an example of RIGHT. The battle for Paragon City will not be over if the servers go dark on November 30. Just as King Arthur's mission did not end at Mt Badon, or Vanyel's stewardship did not end with his death, nor Gandalf's when he fell with the balrog, the battle by the heroes of CoH must be such as to inspire a legend.
NCsoft holds many cards, but this they cannot take from us. Only WE can choose to make our stand an inspiration that will be remembered. That is the way to go forward despite any setbacks, and that is how we will convince others that the dream of a City of Heroes reborn is not just possible... but inevitable. No matter what happens, we "shall rise again! And woe to the wicked!"
We are heroes. This is what we do.

Yes, do please feel free to 'shop around' our Testimonials thread as much as you like. There's some truly awe-inspiring--and heart wrenching--stories in there. Good grief, I'm tearing up just
posting about that thread. Beware the onion-chopping ninjas, but it's worth a solid read.
So, we have a Bard from another dimension, coming to give aid to heroes from hearing of our plight?

Welcome to our ranks! Here's your cape & cowl, (you don't have to use them, but as you can imagine, we get them whole sale) and any & everything you can bring to the fight will be greatly appreciated and I will be honored to fight side by side with you.
May they sing songs of this day til the end of time!

Not just ANY bard, a FAMOUS bard. Nearly as famous as Leslie Fish, maybe. (grin)
That video does kinda getcha, don't it?

Yes, you there! That's right, I've got something amazing to share with you, and hopefully this will lift your spirits a little higher, sit back for this one cause it's one major step for Good and a ginormous leap for Good kind!
Game Informer Editors (who would like to remain anonymous until the publishing) are looking for personal stories, and experiences from the players. I even have a nifty e-mail to send your special stories to: webmaster@gameinformer.com, use the header: Save CoH Effort - Article for Magazine (Oct Issue)
It will get to where it's got to go! Remember to kill them with kindness and express your heroic selves and duty. I suppose if you evils and newts HAVE to join in then the Good Guys can look away for a few seconds while you press send.
Good luck everyone, I'll be cheering you on!
Done. ;D
Fansy, you are truly one of the Good Guys!
I have collated and sent 6 emails with the stories culled from the Testimonials thread. I'm starting to think I am going to have to name a Valdemar Bard Fansy now....
Or maybe a Companion.

At the very least he's earned his place among the champions of Paragon City. We are heroes. This

If this hasn't been posted on the CoH forums yet, it really should be. Not everyone has made it over here (I only migrated recently), and I think such news would be welcome.
and speaking of welcomes... Good to see you, Fansy! Glad you're here!
I sat here at work on a long break and typed a very long email on my phone. Much eazier on the key board at home. I couldn't wait till I got home. So I took my time here at work and typed the best letter I could. I believe my story was included in Ms Lackey's emails but I wanted to be sure so I wrote my own as well although I am sure she wrote it far better than I could. Thanks to you for helping us with this. Fancy Welcome to the fight. You are a Hero of Heroes.
I sent in my post from the LGBT outreach thread, with some screenshots of the appropriate character.
Well-met, Fansy! We're glad you decided to join us in our fight -- for, no matter how futile the nay-sayers may claim it, as has been said before, we're heroes. Saving Paragon City has been our jobs for years -- this is what we do.
As for the email, I'll be drafting one shortly. I can't claim to be quite so loquacious as Misty (but, then, who can?), but I can throw together a few impassioned words for willing ears.
::hands Fansy a Paragon City cloak brooch:: Thought a bit of a welcoming gift was in order, and brooches are always in style for the bard on the go... :D
I don't know if I can think of anything more appropriate than this legendary bard joining the good guys of COH. I'm so glad I never seriously played a villain. ;)
Hello and welcome!
Now - I have a question I'm kind of embarrassed to ask.
Could someone clue me in as to the nature of Fansy's celebrity? I was never into Everquest or it's world and community so I can only gather from this conversation that Fansy is a well-known "big name player" in Norrath similar perhaps to the stature in our community of Ascendant or VV? I'm totally clueless here and some context would be appreciated.
Do a quick google for "Fansy the Bard" and I almost guarantee you that your question will be answered. ;)
http://www.notacult.com/fansythefamous.htm
You know, it occurs to me that Twixt is Fansy's Evil Twin.
...that thought slightly horrifies me, VV.
The link I found was on Cracked.com, a list of most elaborate "dick moves" in online games, though his was by far the most justly deserved by those on the receiving end. The fact that the internet's greatest time sink was the result on the top of my list seemed slightly appropriate to the title of the article.
Done and sent!

Hail Heroes!
Why haven't you been hearing from me lately? Well, I'll tell you! I've been in game! That's right, and have been visiting all the servers doing in-game type things that are heroic like saving kittens and strange office personnel somehow found in a sewer. With staplers. Why staplers? Why not staplers!
You can catch me by the names: Fansy, F A N S Y, or Fansy. <-- With the period!
That's right because someone on the servers for some reason has my name (Good guys often share stuff) which is perfectly A-OK to me! Just as long as they're spreading the righteous cheer!
My Global is @F A N S Y (Someone took Fansy, must be a Hero mind meld!)
If you wish to add me then please do so, and drop me a line if you need me for anything!
But this is not the reason I have come to you today!
Moving on>>>
I (possibly) got in touch with Jeph Jacques, Jerry Holkins & Mike Krahulik, Lynn Johnston; but their involvement is dicey due to their schedules and work load. None, however, were against an in-game event (of some sort) as long as it's a set day where they can wear their cape, cowl, and mask without(or limited) interruptions.( Now double checking sources to make sure they are NOT imposters!)
I've been a busy bard playing my song of happiness, planting seeds everywhere they might grow. Links upon links upon links! Do not fret, Heroes! I'll keep going until my wind pipes burst and fingers fall off!
Go-Go Good Team!
...
...
...
...
...that slow rumbling sound you all hear quietly building up in the background is the Great Eye of the Internet slowly lifting its lid to gaze in our direction.
Good work, Fansy. My hat is off to you, sir Bard.
I stand amazed.
But this is why Fansy is a Famous Bard.

Networking is an amazingly powerful and useful talent and skill. I wish I had any at all. In lieu of that, I am attempting to make friends - or at least cordial semi-professional acquaintances - with those who demonstrate it in abundance. (And with people in general, as I like having friends, but since I'm not the most charismatic of people... well, you know what I mean.)

Yes, and apparently there are City of Gyros locations (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Shops_and_Businesses_of_Paragon_City) in game. They're listed in atlas park though, so not sure how accurate the locations are. I think the list is from before the atlas revamp.

Y'know...
I just had the strangest epiphany... it's like Ferris Bueller actually was not just a movie, but a thinly veiled DOCUMENTARY about Fansy's early life (names changed of course). And that the "kid that everyone knows" became "the man what knows everyone else" and now, many years later, finally found a CAUSE worthy of all that pent up coolness.

That's cool.

Hail, Again!
I wanted to convey to everyone who may have the belief that I am purposely ignoring their plights in private! This is untrue my fellow goodians! I have not the ability to respond as my telepathic communication has be shuttered by the game's shenanigans! What shenanigans? Why the rebelliousness of non-VIP and ''not Tier 4'' madness!
I do see your desires to join with me and the Flowers of Happiness but I cannot speak back, though do not distress; send me an email in game or on here! If I am on I will either hop onto the one and so far only character that has been raised above 10 levels to speak back to you (if allowed) and will do my best to answer what I can. Right now the only server that I have long range chat capability in is Virtue but if you wish to rectify that by heroic deeds of good guyism I will not refuse such aid to spreading my song!
I am not ignoring you, I am simply incapacitated.
Playing for you,
Fansy
You can reply to character-to-character tells with /reply. You can't initiate a /tell, and you cannot use /reply with @global chat, but you can respond to characters on your own server as a freebie. :)
Having had the pleasure of playing with Fansy (and it is a pleasure), he's great fun. And I love his Grandpa stories. I shall have to snag him on Pinnacle at some point and PL him to over 10.
Hail!
I want to clear the air with EVERYONE! I, as often times can(and do), rush into things blindly, did not confirm that the Fred I was speaking to was indeed the real Fred. I got duped by a super good impersonator that I couldn't believe wasn't real and amazing more is that I fell for something I should of easily caught! BUT alas, not all is lost! For now I am DOUBLE CHECKING MY CONTACTS and SOURCES so if you think this is going to happen twice to this bard, O'ah OH! I don't think so! You can only blind fold justice once, and then the righteous will stand against all that is evil, and squish it under foot!
In other news, I feel like a complete idiot for allowing myself to be blind sided as I was when I first met Mercedes Lackey. I still do not consider myself a '' celebrity..'' not like those that can actually make a difference so when I meet a REAL celebrity - aka - Mercedes Lackey, I become extremely goosh brained and sometimes do not follow through with the leads that sketchy sources have given me. Fear not, however! The Good Team does not cave in to one false claim, for rising out the ashes due to the communities out reach in pseudo thanks comes the real Fred whom I will attempt to ACTUALLY collaborate something with. As for the impersonator, well, I've dealt with that issue and you can rest assured it will not happen again. As for the person's account the impersonator went under? DO not have any fear, it was not a phisher or spammer, it was not someone who had the intention to do the community any harm by collecting personal information and the account used, yes admittedly by my fault, was not meant to be used in that manner. The problem has been solved, it will never EVER happen again and the one who loaned their account shouldn't be persecuted.
Now onto more important business!
Rhett and Link's super note is a real, confirmed deal as is their email address (Now that I'm checking my list..twice over..) I will be continuing with this most recent plan as it's something that will be incredible for the community, the cause, and the good guy spirit! You wanted something big to keep you up? Stay tuned for some very juicy details!
I give both my apologies to all the parties involved,
My stern & quick beat down with lyrical destruction,
and honest promise it will not happen again,
Singing for the cause,
Fansy

It's okay, I've been suckered that way myself more than once. It happens.
Actually you know what? I am going to give irrefutable evidence that I am who I say I am, just so there is no doubt creeping in. I really should have done this before.
"Collegium Chronicles: Redoubt" will come out later this month so no one will be able to quote this but me and my editors. And here is a passage from it, appropriately enough, about the Bardic Trainees.
"We brought up practice instruments and left them here to share," she explained. "That way nobody needed to worry about his personal instruments tonight. Accidents do happen after all. No one wants to have a foot put through his prize gittern."
One of the other Bardic trainees shuddered and ate a big piece of cake to comfort himself. "That happened to me over Midwinter," he explained. "Family gather got rowdy. I was like to die."
He ate another piece of cake to comfort himself. "Did all right out of it I s'pose," he said, after a while. "Family took up collection, Master Martin the luthier in Haven took pity on me, and I got a nice gittern out of it, I guess..."
"But no instrument is like the first good one you ever get," said Lena sympathetically. "That one is special."
The other lad nodded glumly.
"Write a song about it," Lena suggested. "It probably won't make you feel better but it's good to get things like that out in the open. You know what the teachers say, strong emotions make strong music."

*snerk* And the "expert" just noticed that she used the phrase "He ate a piece of cake to comfort himself" twice.
Oy.
And my editor didn't catch it either.
Double oy.
Well there you go people, warts and all.
As Strunk & White points out, sometimes repetition is an important part of writing.
As Rowin Atkinson points out, sometimes repetition is funny.
I think contextually the cake-comfort makes sense. I also think cake-comfort makes sense because you don't get this big by leaving scraps around for others who are less appreciative.

Ah, VV, nobody said the expert wasn't human. ;)
Like someone for their merits, my dear.
Love them for their flaws.
Sometimes just one piece of cake isn't enough.
Sherlock Holmes had his "Three pipe problem"; maybe ours is a two cake situation.

My guess would be... the expert really had cake on the brain that day!
I hope you found some after a long writing session, VV! ;D

That wasn't intentional then? I just assumed he ate cake the way I do and stuffed the whole thing in his mouth before grabbing a second piece.
I wish this battle was a cake-walk...and comfort cake would make a delicious healing power.
So what kind of cake were you eatting Ms. Lackey ;)
Cake Mastery the next April 1st power set...which of course requires us to win.
What are you talking about? All real experts are cyborgs!
>_> <_<
The computational intelligence expert admits nothing!
Also! Free spoilers just to get proof that somebody is who she says she is! Yay! ;D
More seriously, I admit I'd never heard of Fansy before this thread, but I have been amused by his past antics as I've read of them and very impressed by his powers of connectivity as demonstrated since he joined this effort. I also must admit that I've only read one thing by Mercedes Lackey, not for lack of interest, but because I just have never gotten around to any of the Valdemar series and...just never got to it. ^^; "If I Pay Thee Not In Gold," however, was a book I thoroughly enjoyed. Nevertheless, it is always wonderful to meet a celebrity of which one has heard and discover them to be truly stand-up as a person, and if my first real impression of Madam Lackey is as a fellow forumite, it has been an excellent one, so I am honored to know both Fansy and VV.
I'd doff my hat, but even my necromantic persona does not have one. Thank you both for your aid to this effort, and thank this entire forum for its energy and dedication. I have learned a lot here, and I look forward to learning still more.

You know, I'm way too hard on myself for my own failures. I can't really tell you how comforting this is. And if you need more proofreaders, I'm sure you can find plenty here. >.>

No, no, no, a thousand times no.
I do an excellent rendition of Princess Vespa.
Only I do it with no sense of key OR rhythm.
My CHILDREN have asked me not to sing to them because I really am that bad. :) (And yes, I really am a bass...and I really am female.)

And me and little brother have always joined right in there...but we are NOT going to the Circle in the Sky"
As mentioned many times...typing on a phone so viewing the links has been problematic...but if you really needs singers...I am a second soprano and still a treble voice at the age of 37...lol...but in.
I cannot resist this.
This is a scene from the third Secret World Chronicles book, REVOLUTION!
It features the winner of the Real World Heroes auction for "have your character die an heroic death in SWC"
One of those escorts was...very loud. Loud out of all proportion to his size. "I am telling you, Bulwark and the blue chick, the CMO, are totally getting it on. I heard it all over in ECHO Med. He's over there practically every night, and what else would you be doing with a gal that's that smokin' hot?"
Frank--who had taken the callsign of "Frankentrain"--had been a member of ECHO two years before the Invasion in, of all places, Providence Rhode Island. His power was that his skin was nearly granite-tough, and he was, as he put it "pretty hard to kill." He and the only other Op 2 in Providence had both been steam locomotive hobbyists, and had been at an antique rail museum working on one of their "babies" when the Invasion began. His friend who, unfortunately, had been stronger but not nearly as hard to kill, had squeezed boilerplate into makeshift armor for both of them before they answered the red alert. Frank had kept the armor, now worn over a nanoweave suit, and kept the nickname he'd picked up that day as his callsign.
"I don't know, Frank," drawled Paperback Rider, from the corner where he was (as always) half-immersed in a book, print scrolling over his paper-white face as he read. "Bulwark just doesn't seem like the type. Really doesn't seem like the type. If I were making bets, it would be on...chess matches, maybe."
Frankentrain guffawed. "You have got to be kidding me. Her? I'd say more like chest matches, if ya know what I mean. I bet her chest size just about matches her IQ. But ya don't date a chick like that for intellectual talk. More like the other four-letter word, right?"
Frank had not noticed that the rest of the room had gone oddly quiet.
"Man, I envy him. What's he got that's so special anyway? He's got about the same amount of expression as a brick. If he's not all over her, he'd had to have the same IQ as a block of linoleum, and hell, we all know he's not that dumb. No, he is totally doing her. Absolutely. I am so sure I would bet on it. I..." Frank felt a chill as an enormous shadow fell over him. "...he's right behind me, isn't he?"
"Yes, Frankentrain, I am," Bulwark rumbled. "Don't you think you should be armored up by now?"
