Title: Something else you can do that's VERY important! Play the game!
Post by: Hyperstrike on September 11, 2012, 02:38:37 AM
Okay, a Facebooker by the name of Kellan Pine (http://www.facebook.com/groups/SaveCityofHeroes/permalink/153054454834826/) actually posted this one up.  And it's really on point.

QuoteAlright guys, there's something important that we need to do. Something that's hard, and something that a lot of people probably don't want to do. We need to play City of Heroes. Make new characters, play old characters, have apocalypse parties, do crazy stuff you never thought of before. Do anything and everything you can to be on those servers. We have to keep our traffic up. How we react, not just out of game, but in game is important. Not only will companies want to see just how loyal we really are, but the remaining staff at Paragon needs to see that we believe their talks can get somewhere. So get online and solo Hamidon or something. Oh, and encourage other people to do the same :)

I know some people are bummed, and others are looking for some modicum of closure.  But remaining in-game is also important.  If NCSoft is seeing a lot of protests, but game traffic tails off to nothing...well, problem!

I agree, this is important.  If you don't have the time (I don't have too much myself, between class, work and studying for the LSAT), keep vigil in your local Atlas (33 if you're on Virtue!).  We gotta keep the server traffic up, or NCSoft or whoever else is not going to take any of this seriously.

I would also like to suggest having rallies as much as possible without tiring people out.  Before the rally, I noticed Freedom was lingering in green with only peak-hours yellow and Virtue was brought down to green about half the time.  People began moving away, but the rally brought them back (Freedom is now yellow most the time and Virtue is almost always yellow).  We gotta keep people logging in.

I'm not the only one on the Exalted server, but I'm the only one holding a torch anytime I look, aside from people who hit the emote as their logout time counts down. THAT's a haunting effect!

I actually set a goal for myself (and only time will tell if I'll be able to complete it). I plan to complete every story arc available in flashback, blue side, on my main toon. Then turn evil, and do every story arc red side, too. If I can do this in three months, it'll be so amazingly amazing that I may have to invent a new word for it.

Back to Architect - because anything we make on Architect is stored locally on our computers, it is one thing that we can take with us even if the worst happens!

I will endeavor to play more... I have to admit, that I have only actually played the game twice since the announcement.  It's just... depressing.

But I can certainly try harder.  :)

Good idea!
I am doing the same, but between two toons.  A Peacebringer for my Blueside shenanigans and an Arachnos for my Redside exploits.  Both of them will switch sides for the badges.

Lots of work.  Some of the original content is a little monotonous.  I recall one 15-19 blue mission that was a defeat all with 12 glowies.  Oy, haha.

I unlocked my Hybrid, which was more of an achievement than I expected it to be. Going to keep advertising for Magi farms until nobody responds that they need to unlock.

I'm not going to be playing much over the next 3 months, not because of the anouncement, but because of life.

Working on some huge projects IRL so most of my time is taken up by those.. pair that with the fact that playing mouse/keyboard games aggravates my bad shoulder.. my gaming time right now is being spent on Skyrim, 'cause I can use the 360 controller, and I don't have to rely on other people.

Oh I have been playing the game for sure. In fact it's a distraction for me lol. I go in with the intention of getting demo shots and end up playing...

Great to point out though and I agree fully!

I agree! We NEED to keep playing and do our utmost to keep others playing.  I am trying to get the word out on Triumph to keep vigil, but am having a hard time getting people to do it.  I'll keep at it though not to worry!

Okay, so there's something I should probably be doing more of. Time's pretty tight for me these days, though. I'll see what I can do. :)

I can't play right now, earliest will probably be Saturday, just due to RL - but I'll spend as much of Sat. online as I can, making an Architect arc. I'm drafting storyboards now.

I feel unmotivated when I get in there -- it hits me hardest when I am in the game. Almost like being in shock. Hopefully I'll get past that soon and be able to play some more. For now, I'll just be logging in to take screenshots and such.

Good point!  I know my Global Channel friends are all keeping busy in-game.

I'd like to be playing.  Heck, I bought a new computer expressly to run the game (my old one having died) three days before the announcement.  However, downloading CoH is a bit of a challenge these days, with no "download client" links.  Fortunately, I think I can just get the Launcher and then use my disk from seven years ago to install the game, then patch, right?

That brings me to a question: are things like unpublished AE arcs, saved costume files, and saved power customization files saved on the servers as well as locally?  If not, I lost a LOT when I lost my previous machine.

Getting in as much time as I can. My personal project is to "Finish" (Get to 50) as many characters as I can. I'm mostly doing storylines to do it, but I will admit to not turning down the occational farm invite.

I REALLY like the torch emote at signout idea though! I will be doing that in populated areas after a local "Save City of Heroes!" from here on out.

To get around this, you can either go into your NCSoft master account and download the client there (it was still working as of a few days ago), or if you have (or get) the launcher for any other NCSoft games, you can download and install directly from the launcher. This works for new and old accounts alike.

Hope this helps to get a few people back in.

Good suggestion Hyperstrike. I am playing the game about as much as I can. A couple of hours a night.

I don't plan to consider a plan B until mid to late October, hopefully by then we will know more.

I make it a point to log on daily to play or at the least park a character at City Hall. As stated it's important to keep the numbers up in addition to the other efforts being made. More or less try and enjoy the game as you would have prior to "the announcement", and yes I too find myself struggling for motivation at times but now more than ever is important to be strong - if this cause is something important to you, I promise that strength is inside you. Also get some "Save CoH" or "Save the Paragon Devs" AE missions created; it'd give other players a chance to have fun and save our favorite developers at the same time!

Edit: fixed typo (imagine that!  ;) )

I know some people are bummed, and others are looking for some modicum of closure.  But remaining in-game is also important.  If NCSoft is seeing a lot of protests, but game traffic tails off to nothing...well, problem!
After reading this, I've mulled it over for a few days, and posted this on the forums as well... but I wanted to share it here:

By no means am I to be credited with this, but it's the truth. If I'm right, Hyperstrike was the first to say this (though I could be wrong but I don't care, it's good advice...) and bears repeating, if we really want to win against this.

One of the biggest things they're going to look at (if they're inclined to look at anything) is numbers now. We need to show support and solidarity BY PLAYING THE GAME.

I'm sure they'd like nothing more than for us to vent our spleen and then move on to other games (their games if given a choice). That justifies them closing it down. That's what they're hoping on if they're determined to shut us down. We made noise and that's great, BUT THAT'S NOT ENOUGH. Not until November 30th when there's no choice. If you feel the need to protest after that, there's no recourse but to speak with your wallet.

Right now, we still have our game, and leaving can be just as vital as our voice when it means we aim to stay.

Titan contiunes to come up with 'solidarity' events. The next Positron Rally (on Thursday and Saturday to run both Positron TF's is) just more fire in the bellies of our participants, and data to those who can mine it to show how important we are to those who swore to stand behind Paragon Studios... Both it's employees and the game they created. Each of these are pivitol in making our case.

It hurts. I know. It's sad to look at... (whatever) I know. The thing is, for now, we CAN'T STOP PLAYING.

Us 'moving on' is exactly what they want. If, 3 months from now there's little to no playerbase, they'll close the doors with little regret, and probably little press. They will have won. After all, WE gave up. It's not enough to have energy now...

If it means so much to us, honoring those relationships that we know will contiune beyond this game...

If it means so much to us, those relationships that have passed us from other causes, that we'll never see again.

If it means so much to us, the server communities we formed, and will never see in this inacarnation again..

IF IT MEANS SO MUCH TO US, the development team that we praise for their time here and don't want it to stop... further enriching this game in ways we've rarely or never seen in any other MMO...

We need to keep playing. We, the players, need to dredge up the strength to log in and keep fighting the good fight (for heroes) and taking what's ours (for the villains). As the dev team said... without us, they are nothing.

We need to keep being their heroes (and villains!!!) We need to keep logging in and letting NCSoft know we support Paragon city 'til the bitter end!!!

I don't care how sad it is, how mad this makes you. These things don't matter. If we have any hope of saving our City, it's through actions AS MUCH AS WORDS.

Keep logging in. Keep saving the day (or taking it over) keep the 'little guy' safe (or keep robbing the bank). Whatever it is to keep our City vital. KEEP DOING IT.

IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO TOTALLY GET OUR MESSAGE ACROSS WHEN WE'RE NOT DOING COMMUNITY/SERVER EVENTS TO SHOW SOLIDARITY.

LET NCSOFT WE WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT, AND WE WILL KEEP PLAYING 'TIL THE LIGHTS GO OUT.

I don't ask you do this for me. At the end of the day, I'm a nobody lurker who only wished they could contribute more than they did, and you probably don't even know who I am.

Do this for yourselves, who claim to love Paragon and the Rogue Isles so much. Do this for the Game Developers who are not just losing a game, they're losing a job!

But again, just as importantly, do this for yourself...

If you love this game, spend as much time in it as you can, because if everything else fails, you will at least knew you did everything could could to suck the marrow out of it and learned and felt all you could for this City until the bittersweet end.

Thank you.

A player and citizen of Paragon City.

Just checked Hyperstrike's source and quoted it on my OP on the forums.

The game has seemed more quiet than usual. This is a shame, this is when we need to make our biggest noise yet! Drink all we can of this great virtual world. Make sure it is known it doesn't die with this. We'll carry it on in tabletop games and in any way we can, for those who will not let it go.

I know it won't for me. Paragon means (not 'the' world but) A world to me.

I have finished 2 Level 50 characters JUST THIS WEEK! As an ALTaholic, I've got more characters than I have open slots (I can't buy any more due to the store closing) and I am trying to get as many of them "Finished" (To level 50) as I can in the next 3 months.

So far I've done Cheshire Kate (Ill/Emp Controller, Freedom), who started at 43, and Wayward Seraphim (Dual/Will Scrapper, Infinity), who started at 44. Next is Mark Forth (EnB/EnM Blaster, Guardian), who is starting at Level 42. Not sure how many I get done, as they will be starting at a lower level each time., but I figure this will give me something to focus on to keep me from thinking too much about "The End Of Days".

I'm trying to get my first level 50 here, although I'm a three year vet. :/

Anyone know of any good farming missions I should be aware of around level 46-49? Like one with a crap ton of fake nemesis? (Mission end xp per kill... nom.)

Thanks!

AE. You can build your own farm pretty easily in there. You'll get tickets instead of normal drops, but I doubt that matters much to you. There's also the old Freakshow mission from one of the Portal Corps. people, but they may have modified that idk.

I'd like to leave a toon in vigil for some length of time when I cant be there, but ive never actually done it before. (I assume its when players are afk but they have a gray message above their head instead of just "afk")

Can someone give me some quick instruction please?

Thanks! :D

The commaned to put "<custom text here>" in an AFK bubble over your character's head is /afk <custom text here>, where <custom text here> is, of course, your chosen text.

To keep the game from automatically logging you out due to inactivity, you'll need to be on a Task Force. Ouroboros missions and AE missions count--just get one, set it as the active mission, put your custom message over your head, and go about your day.

I hear /maxinactivefps 1 will tell the game to only render 1 frame per second whenever the CoH application isn't in the foreground--that would really save on processor cycles if you want to use your computer for other things while making a statement.

I am trying to stay as positive as I can...just very hard to do :(

How about a "SaveCOH" SG on each server as well? Since so many SGs seemed to have emptied out, it could be a good way to galvanize the active players who are left. I'm not VIP, so I don't think I could start one, but I'd sure as heck join it.

Yes there is a global SaveCOH channel. It was started during the Unity Rally in AP.
It's an open channel so anyone can join although at this point it might be full.

We had 3 Moonfires and a Renault all going at once on Champion server last night, plus I think someone got some iTrials going.  Biggest challenge was finding people to actually take group lead (which still blows my mind 8 years later...)

Short version: don't just log in, DO something, and bring people along.  Make noise.  People are looking for activity, in globals, in zones, in broadcast.  Run a DFB if you have to, just reassure the wider audience that isn't tuned in here or on the forums that there's still a reason to stay, as opposed to stray.
