Title: Install help: Error opening file for writing
Post by: kwsapphire on April 22, 2010, 04:44:52 AM
I just installed Windows 7 on a new hard drive and I am in the process of installing all the other software I want to use. I tried to install the .NET 2.0 framework, but it wouldn't install for a 64-bit OS. I found the 64-bit version online, but when I tried to install it, it said it's already part of the OS. Okay, so..

I tried to install Mids, but I get this error:

Error opening file for writing:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Titan Network\Mids Hero Designer\Hero Designer.exe
(ABORT/RETRY/IGNORE)

Which.. of course it's having issues, since that directory/file doesn't exist.

Soooo now what?

EDIT: Nevermind, I ran it as an administrator and it worked. I saw that solution for someone else's error and thought it might help, and it did! I can tell Win7 is going to take some getting used to...

For future reference, an error along these lines is common when the computer is prevented from creating a file (eg: installing), not just when adding to an existing file (eg: saving) ;)

I'm glad you found a solution for yourself.

I also had this error, but only when I tried installing it to the folder my old MIDs was saved in, even when I ran it as an administrator. When I installed it to the .../titannetwork/mids... it worked. So now I have two versions of MIDs, or something, which is not so hot.

I did this because I was told on the official forums that running the updater from the old version was not the thing to do, and downloading straight from the site was. So now I have 2 folders with MIDs... I'm going to just uninstall the old version, I guess.

Edit: I'm in Vista, by the way. Uninstalling the old version went fine, then I had to delete the folder it was stored in. MIDs works just fine, and as I expected all my builds were saved. So no big deal, I just would have liked to have MIDs install to where the old version was, rather than forcing me to make a new folder.

Further Edit: I feel the need to be more clear. I have Vista, and downloaded NXDSetup1-707.exe. I ran it, but whether I installed to programfiles/midsherodesigner or programfiles/titannetwork/midsherodesigner it did not work. I ran as an administrator, and got the same error message when installing to the old MIDs folder. Running as an administrator got it to work in the new folder. Maybe you already got that but I thought my posts up to this point may have been unclear.

Was Mids still open at the time?  That happened to me at one point.  I had tabbed away, then remembered to install after downloading.  The program was still open, and it was giving a similar message to the UAC issue.

Ooh... I honestly don't recall. Well, too late now!

Awesome. I just purchased a new computer and I'm new to Windows 7 (previous computer was XP). I didn't even know about this option. Thanks!
