"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything." Plato

"I don't understand," the producer said, "you have your whole career ahead of you. Your future is assured. Why do you have to go out and play hero?"
Nia stopped her packing and stared at the wall ahead of her. Indeed, why did she have to give up the money, the concerts, and the legacy? Like so many people in this world Nia Simone had watched the heroes take to the skies and defend the weak and innocent from those who would do them harm, and part of her wished that she could do that.
Thoughts like that belonged in pulp fiction magazines that have overused clichés and also having a very skewered perception of what is right and wrong, good and evil. Silliness, that's all it was, pure and utter silliness. If you have talent, then you use it and milk it for all its worth so you can live comfortably and not have to end up like some sort of statistic, and if you went against that then you were a grade A fool.
Maybe that was why she wanted to give it all away.
It wasn't to show off a dunce cap. It was to say that that kind of thinking was wrong. Life wasn't defined by who you knew or what you had but rather by the choices you made. To stay and accept all the rewards her music career would give her wasn't her choice because she didn't want to do it. She wanted to use her voice with the heroes of the world, and if that made her broke and forgotten then so be it.

She finished packing and turned to walk past her manager saying, "I can tell you, but you wouldn't understand."
All of this was said two days after the Rikti invaded Earth.
Three days after that, Nia Simone registered as Concord whose power came from her voice.
