Someone is hacking my Wi-Fi!
I saw over 400 megs poof yesterday when all I did was send a mail, check weather, and post here. Today I didn't even turn my PC on except when it woke me up this morning due to it comes on by itself. I turned it off and have been doing chores and watching the modem in the meanwhile.
~ noon my usage was completely reset. I thought, hurrah, maybe Verizon found their mistake! Then, my old usage number came back up plus, possibly, a few megs or so - maybe not. I could be wrong. Anyway.. Then.. between 4:00 and 5:00 (maybe 4:20?) I get dinged for 420 megs and I haven't turned my PC on once since very early this morning..!
Nice, huh? This is a pretty unlikely area, I thought, to see that kind of thievery. I wonder if the ISP itself isn't getting hacked. I had that happen the one and only other time I had metered Internet and all his customers got charged for it, for months, before the guy who was the local ISP figured out *he* was getting hacked. Somehow.
Anyway. Blah. I have one of those accounts now that won't charge me for going over my limit, but... I share this account and apparently there is a per-device data limit - any device that goes over the limit throttles allll devices on the account. Which isn't going to make me very popular. Especially if it starts to be a regular occurrence.
I'm just glad it wasn't my PC! I was locked out of my ancient Internet e-mail account recently and my backup account, too. And then my data (monthly data limit data before throttlation) starts poofing.. So, I'm glad it's not someone using my PC to spam ... spam. It's someone hacking this modem - or, they are hacking Verizon. Either way, they ain't hacking me personally, apparently, so that's good. I've not been doing anything even remotely high risk except using the STO (black data hole of the cyberverse) wiki..
Good news is, CO plays perfectly, throttled, the last time I checked and STO doesn't play so bad either. Mostly it's just extended load times and exponentially extended patch times. haven't got throttled yet but it looks to be guaranteed to happen.
