Title: So... I finally did this.
Post by: houtex on January 03, 2013, 04:30:41 AM
I gathered all the .oggs from the Titan Network, filtered out some which I simply don't care for (being as they weren't in game, and feel unfinished to boot...)

Converted them to HQ MP3s...

Then I put them in a sort of order (such as the Mission Completeds at the end, login music at the front...)

And burned me a City of Heroes/Villains/Going Rogue/Freedom CD, which is going into the car tomorrow morning, and shuffle is turned on.  350+ pieces of CoH music.  Sweet.

So there ya go.  I'm jonesing so bad I'm puttin' it in the car's stereo. :P

/Gonna pause it at stops, skip to another song, and when the light changes, hit play and pretend I moved into another zone. :D

I've had the music (not the oggs, I hate that format with a passion, though I've downloaded most of them) that they offered on the ftp section for years, on my itunes. I always love it when they come up.

And what's wrong with ogg other than Apple doesn't support that open source codec?  I think their quality is better at the same bitrate compared to MP3.

Having to then convert them. Since I don't have a way of just playing them with the rest of my playlist I'm not going to make a 2nd player for it, or whatever. Apple doesn't support it - I can't play it via the player I use. If it supported the format on Itunes automatically, or hell even *converted* them automatically, I wouldn't mind so much. Yes, I know their quality is nice. But the format is... meh.

I don't have it out for .ogg... but apparently my Mustang's Shaker prefers to use MP3s or WAVs or Audio Tracks.  Go figure.  So convert them I did.  Meh.  It'll play, and that's all I needs right now.

/at least, I hope it plays... I have burned some that haven't... then reburned and they did... but that was my JVC Chameleon in my Mark VIII.  And the JBL ones in the Mark VIIs back when... you had to buy JUST THESE types of CD coaste... I mean, discs.  :)

CD coaste... I mean, discs.  :)

Heh... I actually used CDs that didn't burn right as my drink coasters for years :)

And I'm lovin' the car trip soundtrack idea. Sweeeet.

I had to come in and talk story.

So... i put all 364 MP3s on the root of the CD and burned it... and... my Mustang didn't like it.

*grr*

So... I'm gonna have to try it again.  I'm a little ticked that that happened... my work computer read it fine..  Maybe I have to use sub folders... Ugh.

I'll let y'all know, 'cause, y'know, I absolutely know everyone in the world cares about this... right?  RIGHT?!?

Right. :D

Car stereos are occasionally set up to reject writable CDs.

Didn't even know car stereos could read anything off a CD other than standard CD format music files anyway?

But then what do I know? The newest car I've had is at least 10 years old.

The stereo in my newer car reads CD-R. CD-R/W, USB, and SDHC cards.  My older car (1998) barely even reads CDs.

Well, now I learned a wholly new thing about the Shaker 500/1000.

Turns out they play a regular data type cd just fine... as long as you do this:

Files+folders must be less than 256.  If that's all on the root, then it will just simply not work.  So you have to make folders...
Up to 99 folders can be made.  Up to 99 MP3s can be put in a folder.

But NO MORE than 255 anything on the entire CD.

And yes, CD+RWs work fine, turns out.  But I'm missin' about 120 songs. :p

I'm gonna start compiling zone tracks into one long song, or genre them up and make them one song that way.  Man.  You just don't know how many little snippets there are... and that's not including the 'not released, unfinished sounding' tracks.

/The El Mexicano music track is actually quite good, turns out, btw.

Anyone have an explanation of just how to convert the music so I can listen to it on iTunes. I'm not too savy on that end of things.

Assuming Windows, I'd grab WinLAME (http://winlame.sourceforge.net/), drop the .ogg files in there, convert to .mp3 at whatever bitrate, and go from there.

So far as the specifics of iTunes goes, I'm going to have to assume you know how to get .mp3 files into iTunes, because I've never touched iTunes in my life.

Mac users are pretty much the only ones who can't play Vorbis out of the box. Windows users get official codecs (http://www.xiph.org/dshow/), any media player for Linux supports it, Android devices support it... It's pretty much just Apple telling you what types of files you're allowed to listen to. As usual. (-:

I'm a Windows user and the first time I had to play an .ogg file (granted, a video rather than audio version of the format) I had to hunt for codecs to do so and found out about the K-Lite codec pack.  That was several years ago, and I've used the K-Lite pack ever since.  I hate .ogg because back then it was one of the few file types that wouldn't play on my DVD player, and now it's one of the filetypes that I can't stream through my XBOX to my TV (hard enough finding an xvid or avi file that doesn't slow down, stutter, and/or lose audio sync).  And any supposed improvements to quality aren't discernible to my eyes or ears.

And the few times I've tried converting a file in the past, it took forever and didn't produce a very good result.

Initially, .ogm's were always awkward, and never really that good to be honest.  This was a good 7 or 8 years ago though, IIRC,  and the situation has vastly improved since.  .ogg audio files however, I've never had any issues with and converting back and forth didn't cause me any issues when I tried it so see how well it worked.

Audio quality differences between .ogg and (for example) .mp3 are entirely dependent on your ears, hardware, headphones and the bitrate of the .mp3 versus the quality setting on the .ogg.  The same goes for .ogm versus other file formats, the encoding settings used determine the quality of the end results (and transcoding video from format to format is never going to give results as good as the original file)

Nowadays, the most exotic video file format I tend to encounter is matroska wrappers containing mpeg4 hi10p video and AAC audio...

SMPlayer2 (http://mplayer2.srsfckn.biz/) is what I use for most video now, and anything it can't handle I throw at Media Player Classic (http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/).  Having CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net/) installed provides MPC-HC and the various splitters and demuxers etc to get pretty much anything to play, I find.

For converting video I use Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) and once you get the hang of it's less than totally intuitive interface it provides good results, IME.

This is all windows, of course.  Good luck to those on apple getting to where they want to be though, and I hope to god that the 'it's for your own good' walled garden approach of Apple which can cause these sorts of issues isn't successfully imitated by MS, even if that appears to be what they're trying to do from a superficial reading of Windows 8 (disclaimer, I've had nothing to do with Win8, all I can go off is what little I've read on the issue, but the windows app store, or whatever they're calling it, seems like a step towards that direction)

Those are those darned .mkv files, aren't they?  Fansubbers like to annoy me by using them.

For playing stuff on my computer, I just use plain ol' Windows Media Player.  With the aforementioned codec pack, I've never had a problem getting it to play stuff.  The problem for me lies with trying to get it on my TV in some fashion, though now that I have a modern TV I'll probably be able to do so with an HDMI cable if I ever get around to acquiring one.

Mind linking to where you pulled these from? (or the MP3s?) I'd like to do the same for myself. :)

Here ya go:

The MP3s, well... just gonna have to convert them... I found a free one, and it worked fantastic... but I didn't like how it installed itself as a background, so I pulled it, and I don't remember what it is now. :(

About converting, alternatively download the pack from this thread, all MP3 music + oggs http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,7192.0.html

Pack above contains 766 files.
