Title: which is better url?
Post by: cohRock on January 14, 2013, 12:54:20 AM
I have started upgrading 116 individual character pages for my Halls of Heroes (http://). The first pass was content, now I'm working on giving them a much better style.  A new feature of the pages will be a link to the Paragon Wiki for the issue in which the character was created.  Since there are so many pages, I want to start out with the best form of Wiki address.  Which is best to use?

1) http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Issue_3
2) http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Issue_3

I personally prefer the "paragonwiki" form, but I don't know if 2 years from now ya'll will still be paying for that domain name.

--- reference ---
* new style: Ochre Rook (http://r0k.us/rock/games/CoH/HallsOfHeroes/Infinity/OchreRook.html)
* old style: Perky Sue (http://r0k.us/rock/games/CoH/HallsOfHeroes/Infinity/PerkySue.html)

As far as I know, we plan to keep both domains names indefinitely so you shouldn't need to worry about either of them vanishing on you years from now.

I personally use the paragonwiki.com domain. I'm not sure that we've ever established which is officially the preferred domain.

A little late to the party, but I should note that when I log in to the paragonwiki url, I am not logged in to the wiki.cohtitan one as well. Because of this, and because the paragonwiki url seems more elegant to me, I use it exclusively.

What seems odd to me is that both urls work for apparently any page; i.e., http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Battle_Terminal and http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Battle_Terminal are the same page. I would have thought that at some point one url would redirect to the other, so that all the pages would be the same url, but I guess not. I just hope there's some sort of database magic going on so that each page isn't taking up double the space it should.

No database magic necessary.  Both URLs point to the same numeric IP address.  The database has no awareness of the URL that was used to reach it.

I tested it with my user page, and reached that conclusion. The thing that bothers me is the fact that logging in to one doesn't log me in to the other. It's normally not a problem, but every once in a while I'll stumble across a wiki. link, and when I take it I'm not logged in already.

That's because your browser won't send cookies that it thinks are for paragonwiki.com to cohtitan.com or vice versa, for security reasons.

Turns out, having both domains work was wasting a bit of space on the backend (they each had their own file cache). So we decided to just make wiki.cohtitan.com redirect to paragonwiki.com. Problems solved. :)
