Watching it now.

It's off to a good start.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Having Selena Kyle there when Bruce's parents die is a really cool touch.

Spoiler for Hidden:
If that's Catwoman she'll be a little... matronly(?) when Bruce grows up won't she?

And so far we have confirmed 2-face, Riddler and Penguin?  I'm not assuming the shooter is Joker yet.

Bruce is supposed to be 12. She can't be any older than 15, and could be as young as 13 or 14. So, not exactly a huge age difference.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Is the pepper girl supposed to be Poison Ivy
Spoiler for Hidden:
I assumed so. She said that her name was Ivy, and she was tending a plant after the detectives were let in - or, at least, she was standing by one. I realize that PI's real name isn't Ivy, but they might have changed it to set up the allusion.

And I was thinking that the stand-up comic was the future Joker.

All in all, the first episode shows promise.

They always mispronounce names in these shows.... "Fal-koh-nee" not "Fal-cone". Just like it's "Raysh" al Ghul, not "Razz" al Ghul.

Other than that, and that by the time Bruce becomes Batman some of his Rouges Gallery will be a bit...old, I really liked it. Definitely will be tuning in next week.

Well, they want to have SOME of the recognizable characters in the show, and depending on when Bruce becomes Batman they won't be THAT old. Selina is 15. Both Cobblepot and Nygma look to be early 20s. Bruce is 12. He will surely be Batman by his early 20s, so they won't QUITE be ready to draw Social Security yet. :D

Thumbs up from me as well. Lots of good set-up while still managing to give us an entertaining show. When I compare this to the beginning of Smallville, or even Arrow, really, this is looking good right out of the gate. I'll be there next week, same Ba-uh, Gotham..time... aw, nerts.  ???

I like Bullock, Gordon, and Alfred...  I think they're laying the recognizable characters on a bit too thick, but the show is interesting and I am going to try to keep up with it.

I've only watched the pilot so far, but I thought it at least warranted a few more
episodes before I make my mind up.

About 1/2 way through the pilot though, my wife looks up and says "OK, so it's just
another cop show, except it's in Gotham."

Which pretty much sums up any of my thoughts about the show too.  I think we were
both expecting more Batman and less CSI: Gotham

I'm not seeing much CSI here. This doesn't come off as procedural to me, but more drama/action. Feels more like Arrow to me.

And from the preview for next week, it looks like we'll get to see Professor Pyg.

After they said something about "he's going after bad cops", I was thinking it'd be Prometheus. I'm glad they're using more obscure villains like the Dollmaker, and possibly Pyg, Prometheus, and I'm sure others. That's what I liked about Beware the Batman.

I'm trying to figure out if this show is set in present day or what though. Everyone's using cellphones, but at the same time, a lot of the cars, especially the police cruisers, are from 80s or earlier.

Sadly, it seems we did not actually get Pyg.  Now that, however, begs the question:  Was that an intentional chain jerking, or pure coincidence that we got to see him in a pig mask?  I almost hope they were intentionally screwing with Batman fans just because they can.  :)

The dude's second disguise made me think of The Shadow. Possibly another nod since Batman is somewhat based on that character.

I've never been a huge fan of procedurals and this one is no different in that aspect.  But I'll keep watching it just for the characters.  Just like I kept watching the abysmal "The Cape" just for Keith David and James Frane.  I absolutely love Penguin and could watch him all day.  I also love Selena Kyle but to be honest she kinda creeps me out too.  Not because the actress or character is creepy but because it's like watching a 15 year old Michelle Pfeiffer.  I'm pretty sure Michelle did discover the secret of time travel.

See, I'm not seeing where this is a procedural. Yes, they're going to take clues and ultimately solve the crime, cause the main character is a cop. But this is nothing like CSI or Law & Order.

Just as a crime show, I really enjoy this. Some great characters, good writing and twisted plots usually considered "too complicated" for network TV viewers.  And the show even looks good. Then add in that this is the Batman world and all the tie ins and Easter eggs. I also like that they've made little Bruce a bit venge-crazy and Alfred is a pretty dark mentor. I like that touch, and it's one we haven't really seen yet in the live action versions before it.

Plus the Penguin.

Interesting that we've not had mention of any counseling for Bruce, especially in light of the way Alfred treated Bruce over the broken snowglobe. I get it: a bit of tough love, pick yourself up and move on, do something positive. I don't know why it never struck me before (probably because no version of Batman that I recall has dwelt very long on Bruce's actual childhood), but the relationship between Bruce and Alfred seems...a bit odd, somehow. Yes, the Waynes set it up for Alfred to be Bruce's legal guardian if anything happened to them. But did they mean for Alfred to go on acting as a servant rather than taking on a parental role? I would think it's what a traumatized child actually needs, as opposing to a butler who treats him like a little prince in some ways -- Bruce obsesses over certain areas of expertise, becoming a Batman larvae, if you will, and Alfred lets it happen. Teaches him to fight. Pushes him to be tough.

Ah well, it's just comic book stuff, and the writers have to do something with Bruce and Alfred that will inevitably lead to the Caped Crusader. I thinks too much!

Seemed more like Selina being a brat to me, with the whole righteous indignation at the implication that living in an actual house  with decent food is better than living on the streets and being lucky to eat at all.  How dare he imply that better is better!  The nerve!

But she might have been acting like that on purpose, to keep him from getting mixed up in her problems.

That bit was beautiful.

Yeah that was really well done.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Also, has anyone else gotten chills regarding the next episode? Specifically when a certain character starts laughing....

No chills, Joe.  It actually made me leery of the next episode.  I don't see them being able to introduce that character in a manner that doesn't leave a bad taste...

My guess is that they are only going to introduce him as the Red Hood and just let audiences assume from there.  It may be that he is the Red Hood who became the Joker.  But on the other hand in comic book continuity there were many Red Hoods before him.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Kid was a good actor but i'm never thrilled when they fill in too much of the Joker's history. I guess they're either throwing out the red hood stuff or perhaps he's institutionalized and helped through therapy/drugs to become a run of the mill costumed hero, then the acid bath/bleached skin brings all this back?

The more Gotham i see though it really gives insight into why Bats's villains always reappear so quickly. I think 'escaped from arkham' is just their code for police investigations so botched that the judge had to throw out the case. So Gordon arrests half the circus, keeps the two with alibis in jail, gets his lone clue from an idiot and solves the case through some combination of sorcery and an inherent distrust of red heads, then uses the interrogation as a date and gets a confession from a minor without a lawyer present. And this is the competent incorruptible cop. And this is all before they rely on the vigilante who never testifies to capture all their criminals. throw that into the mix and they should be able to just rent out blackgate for raves and kids' halloween parties.

Did they give the kid's age at any point? If they did I don't remember it.  I didn't once assume him to be a minor because he looks like he is about 20 and the actor is 22.

And I may be in the minority but I really hope they kill off Fish by the end of the season.  She just plain isn't an interesting character or good actress.  That's why I'm very happy she is a new character and not a staple of the DC universe.  It means killing her off is possible.

It might go the other way; she might be so popular that she gets created into the comics!  :o

I don't mind Fish now that she's toned down the shameless eartha kitt catwoman impersonation she was doing the first few episodes.

i just assumed joker was a minor because he didn't seem to have a job with the circus yet.

He looked like he'd make a better Jim Corrigan/Spectre in the future than a Joker to me.

If you mean the Doctor who's trafficking in human body parts and whose name was German for Dollmaker... Having that turn out to be Dr. Leslie Thompkins, a fairly prominent good character in the Batman universe, would be extremely wrong.

I actually thought it was going to be Hush (despite the wrong age) until they said the name. Now one would assume dollmaker because of the name, even though that was never the dollmaker's name, he's not really a bats villain, and they already had him on arrow. I should probably just stop trying to guess these things.

Anyone else find it funny that the administrator asked Fish when the last time she was able to clean herself up was when she showed up in his office wearing her usual heavy makeup? Also odd was the Asian bodega owner doing a pretty spot-on Jackie Mason voice.

Wasn't the Dollmaker alluded to as being behind a caper in an earlier episode of Gotham?

Ahh, didn't know Thompkins was a character in the comics.  I pretty much just thought "what's the crappiest writing they could do in this situation" and revealing the new love interest as a psychopath was it.

I'm not entirely sure

having the Dollmaker be able to work transplants at a level that doesn't exist in the real world works for me.

I really feel like Robin (Penguin) Taylor is being wasted though. He's a good actor, but they are trying to pace his rise to the top a bit too much. I'm not seeing the character seem to learn anything from his mistakes.

The Riddler's insanity bit which reminded me of how they'd always depict drug use in 70s and 80s TV seemed especially bad, though I don't exactly have any psychotic breaks to compare it too, so idk.
