Title: Holy sh*t moment
Post by: GenericHero05 on June 21, 2015, 01:31:38 AM
For me there were dozens but I'll list two so as not to take away from someone else.

1.  When rag doll first came into being. I killed a Skull while he was on the first level of a fire escape and he fell over the side but ended up hanging upside down by one leg slightly swinging from side to side.

2.  When they decided to do away with the 5th Column, I remember going through Steel Canyon and out of nowhere a battle started between about 30 5th Column soldiers and 30 Council soldiers.  There must have been about 20 heroes standing a short distance away just watching the battle. It was amazing.

Fighting Reichsman for the first time and only time ^^
FOURTY MINUTES beating him up until he finally went down
(You can probably tell that I don't do many taskforces or raids :P)

Logging in a brand new character for some Atlas park street sweeping only to find a full on war going on in the streets. It was Council vs. Fifth Column if memory serves.

For me, it was the first time I took Palrah (my favorite tank and blue-side "main"-), threw him into the middle of a huge group of goons and not only had him survive it himself, but hold the attention of the entire lot well enough to keep any of the people with him from coming to any harm.

I don't even remember now who else was on the team, or what we were running... It wasn't particularly high level, so one of the mid-level TFs most likely... but I do remember that moment absolutely cementing my love for tanks in general, and my affection for Pally in particular. I remember giggling, and FCM grinning and saying, "I told you this was fun."

It really was.  8)

When after about 6 months I leveled my Brawl Only Brute (Brawling Humiliator) to 50 in DA.

Also, I beat The Honoree and his cohort all my my lonesome with Brawl.

And then I soloed a +3EB Chimera.  That took about 40 minutes of doing.  And THAT was the one thing where I was all "HOLY CRAP HE DID IT."  'Cause it was *hard*, I tell ya.  And I didn't expire either, which I thought was pretty nifty.

He never did solo a pylon though.  Ah well.

First entering the Shadow Shard. The sheer size of the place astounded me. And the whole zone looked cool. Especially the Storm Palace.

I loved the ragdoll addition. People that didn't play from the start don't realize how boring it was when someone was defeated, they just fell down like a Barbie doll, arms at the side and no movement.

The 5th Column was around the time they had just started the Kheldians, or maybe it was on the test server, but I remember using my Peace Bringer in those fights.

One of mine was the first time I fought the Freakshow, and a few of them rezzed after I killed them. I was like "WTF??". LOL

After 6 years or more of playing CoH there are too many examples of the "Holy ----" moments to go through for me to present them here.  So I'll mention only one.  Please forgive the length, for I have a tendency to be verbose.

Troll Mission, in an abandoned office building, don't remember the name of it.  I'm playing an invulnerable/broadsword scrapper Celtic warrior with bare, tattooed upper torso and kilt named Asteryx.  The team had just cleared the first floor, taken the elevator up to the second, and come down a hallway to an opening;  u-shaped bend to the right, open doorway to the left that led to a staircase that you could take to the landing above.  A walkway led from the landing across the u-shaped bend on the right.  The team had just engaged the first group of trolls near the bend when some dimwit ran up the stairs on our left, bumped full into at least two groups of trolls on the landing, jumped down from it into another group on the back side of the u-bend and led them ALL back to the group.  Everybody died.

Except Asteryx.  I had popped a purple chiclet and a green when I saw that mob round the bend and was flailing away, surrounded by a sea of enemies.  I was cursing the nitwit who was getting us all killed when I noticed a bunch of chiclets starting to appear in my tray.  I happened to be standing on top of one of the team's female characters, and she was feeding me purples and greens and whatever else she had.  So I fought and spammed multiple-target attacks for about 5 minutes.  By the time the team members returned from the hospital almost all of the trolls were dead.  The most memorable experience I ever had in the game.

Playing my stone/axe tank and signature toon Mr Minotaur. Lab room of death (the one with the ramp from ground floor to mezzanine and a balcony above) full of nemesis, 3 fake nems, 50+ jaegers, snipers, the works pre aggro caps. Rumble up the ramp, pull the whole room, too many people decide that getting close is a good idea, blow up 20 jaegers and die, so it's me fighting the lot, and still fighting the remnants when people run back from the hospital and up 3 floors of lab.

Not my first Jumpin Jehosaphat moment, but I'm right there with ya.

Of course, in my case, I caused it by trying to do a group rez just as the targeter was tabing to a new target and I hit Hami... I was so PO'd and embarrassed I hit the debt cap trying to get ppl up... I was such a n00b.

I was teamed up with another player while running my Invul/SS tanker who may have had an unauthorized costume that he only used in missions (Im sure people could figure out who the short haired, square jawed specimen dressed all in blue, with a red cape, red underwear and boots and a golden belt was meant to be).

We were down in the CoT tunnels, and had gotten split up. I noticed that his health was dropping quite rapidly, and a string of inspirations popping up next to his name but it was too much for him, and he fell defeated. I hit fly, and swooped through the tunnels to get to his side, and held everyone's attention to give him time to pop a Rez.

While swinging my fists at the various foes, I see a message from my teammate saying 'I've waited my entire life to see (famous fictional alien and saviour of mankind) swoop in and save me'. It honestly choked me up, and is just one of the many reason I lament the passing of this game.

I came late to a Rikti Raid with an SD/SS Tank, fully IO'd to the build I wanted and needed to test it out.  All the pylons were already defeated and several bombs planted.  The raid group was planting more bombs when I noticed the GM had already spawned so I decided to jump in.  After the bombs were done, the raid noticed I was in center and they just stood on the edge waiting for instruction from the raid organizer.  The organizer broadcasted that I'm ruining the raid and to wait for me to die.  A minute passed, two minutes, three minutes, maybe four minutes and I'm still in the center Foot Stomping, Fire Balling and Shield Charging away, swallowing a medium purple inspira each minute that passed.  Players got bored, one spoke up and said "Are we going to let this guy have all the glory?" which seem to have burst a dam as the center became flooded with heroes/villains.  A few seconds after that, "Ok, everyone attack!" was broadcasted by the organizer.  I received a lot of tells congratulating me for holding center and requests to share my build which I happily did.

I suppose my um, 'holy #@! moment was when I first started playing the game.  ???

..I was exploring, looking around and very taken back at all the Giant statues in Paragon. :o
I would run up to each one and read plaques. I liked the back stories.

Then as a noob,  I was running on the tram tracks....true, bit childish. However, I hadn't really played an MMO game before
and the graphics was stunning to me. I was use to 1999 era games.

This game was interesting even if you didn't Team or battle. I enjoyed being a Healer and found that very much a challenge.
Kind of like trying to lead a group of kids through a field trip, making sure you kept an eye on each one so they didn't get hurt   ;D
while others did the dirty work of combating evil.

I came into the game around the time i2 was released.  I was wandering around Galaxy City when suddenly I'm facing down a floating eyeball that just bit another hero.  I had blundered into the Rularuu Invasion Event, and it was awesome!  I'd always hoped they would bring those invasions back.

Runner up would be the thrill of surviving a run through the Hollows pit on a L5 toon without travel powers.  Lots of Yike!, Doh!, Crap!, AAahhhhh! etc.

My first Holy sh*t moment was kinda standard - I finished and exitied a mission, started chatting with some friends asking for help on their mish, and BOOM, I was dead.

me: "OMGOMGOMG!!! Guys, I think I just got one-shotted by a dev! You gotta see this thing!"
my friend in another zone: "Flo, is it a huge white robot?"
me " Yes! Did he get you guys too?"

Pretty easy one to predict, but the first time one of those Council guys turned into a werewolf.  My PUG was fairly low-level as I recall and we were facing a difficult chew through a Council tunnel map; I think we had the difficulty cranked to help with leveling.  So we're fighting this guy, fighting, fighting, I think one or two of us even dropped.  I'm finally seeing the guy's health drop down to nothing, phew!  Then suddenly he's a werewolf with full health and ignoring my caltrops and bouncing about the room like a super-ball.  Isn't looking like Nosferatu enough for you guys?!  This has to be cheating!

I also enjoyed flying the first time I took that travel power, I think I just flew around Atlas Park for 20 minutes.

Indeed, when I first played in July 04, I got a character to about level 18 and an illusion troller with the great name of Phantom Mullet took me to FF as his SK for some CoT street sweeping, really opened my eyes to what was possible.

I know, I wanted to be a Mu Guardian so bad. :(

Mine was when I first started playing, The only other MMO experience I ever had before then was about 15 minutes of WOW, I didn't know what a pvp server was and I made a character on one. LOL. So I spent the first 15 minutes of WOW trying to do my first quest and getting ganked by a high level character. I was expecting the same from CoH. My RL friend, who convinced me to try the game (he even bought the game for me because I refused to try it) showed me around the starting area before he logged off for the day. I made it to Kings Row all by myself (without getting ganked). When out of no where I see in my chat window "Get him!" or something similar to that. I turn around and there's three. What I thought where players at the time charging me. In brown cloaks, I'm on my first ever character a claws/spine scrapper and I think to myself. No!!!!!! I'm not spending the next 15 minutes dying and having my armor break. So I attack them and win! I call my friend up and say "Guess what? I just took out 3 players that tried to gank me!" He was like "HOW THE H3!! DID YOU GET INTO RECLUSES VICTORY!" LOL!

..............I miss CoH! :(

The first time I created a character in Praetoria, it was late at night and I noticed that the zone was deserted.  Actually, it seemed unusually deserted, even for the late hour - I couldn't even see any NPCs.  That's when the zombies started erupting from the ground near me - a just leveled up to 2nd level character, in a zone I'd never been in before, and, oh look!, there's a zombie invasion going on!  I spent several minutes running about like crazy, trying to find a building that I could hide in, but all the ones I checked were purely decorative.  Then I finally found the hospital; I promptly logged out for the night and came back the next day.  No zombies then.

But I certainly always remembered where the hospital was in Nova Praetoria after that...

I had many  of  those moments  but the  first  was going into  the  Hollows  and seeing  the  results  of the Trolls big dig. I was WTF happened  here and then after a few minutes  was invited  to a FF  run. I was then hooked  on the game since.
One  of my last oh s#*! moments  was in DA teaming  with a friends and I  believe  it was Ice  Mistral  that all of a sudden  had gotten  swallowed  whole. All of us were  like Oh  S#*!!!. WTF  was that. I almost  fell out of my chair  seeing how  it was also 3 am & really  needed  to go to sleep . I went into work  that day with  2 hours  of  sleep like I did several  times a week.

I think my first moment was in the Hollows too. I learned how to stay out of aggro range real quick there. Then all the canyons and craters made the zone feel great. It remained my favorite zone. Any time it was looking to solo through some missions when making a charater I would always go there.

The second time was my hami raid. My computer, or I should say toaster, was barely able to handle the raid. Thankfully I was a part of the drop team and was out of the mess down below. Then during the hold phase/attack phase I had to put my only hold on auto, zoom to first person and look at the ground. The first time there he popped (this was before they changed the fight). I was so excited the whole entire time even when we lost. It felt epic. It's also a reason why I built a gaming computer when I fibally had the money so I could participate in things like that. Never wanted a toaster again haha.

I know I bring this one up a lot, but it was the time I was robbing a bank in a full supergroup team and we WERE steamrolling on a fairly high difficulty. Then the hero phase kicked in. Statesman runs into the bank, then proceeds to take us down, one by one. No matter how many times we came back to take him down he would get us first. This was pre Going Rogue too. Really taught us the importance of debuffers too as we were all Brutes and Stalkers.

Still, I didn't even think you *could* fight the main characters at that time since it was on my way to making my first 50 and hadn't run into one before. ( We later fought Recluse but didn't have nearly the problems we had with States.)

First mixed feelings Holy sh*t moment, getting hover and feeling like "holy sh*t this is going to be awesome, it might be slow but it will still be flying!" and seconds later feeling "holy sh*t this is truly nothing like flying at all is it!".

First good Holy sh*t moment was getting flight, zoomed around Steel Canyon for hours that night, still the thing I miss the most.
I can relate to that 1000%. My first 14 levels must've taken a week or two because I was just soaking it all in.

My other holy shit moment was using a fully charged/boosted Nova for the first time with my energy blaster. I felt like I was really showing the team what was up when is charge up and run into the middle of a huge mob and let it rip. CoH was really good at fulfilling badass fantasies.

I think it was the first time Liberty succeeded in "The Really Hard Way" in the Magisterium Incarnate trial. It was really just awesome. I was fortunate enough to do it twice more, once again on Liberty and then on Champion.

Another moment was when I led a UGT for the first time and we beat that rascally Avatar of Hamidon or whatever it was. (It's been so long, I can't even remember the easiest of details!)

Sometime around I7 or I8, the Rickti Monkey Fight Club was still in Sharkhead.  I didn't know this, didn't know what RMFC was, had never heard of it.  I'm just standing there for whatever reason and suddenly this buzzer goes off, really loud.  I wear headphones when I play so I don't bother anyone else, and sometimes have them turned up pretty loud.  It was painful and made me jump.  It was months before I found out what that sound was but I avoided that area of Sharkhead for a long time after that.

The one moment my mind always goes back too... it was during the winter event in sharkshead. The ghost of the scrapyard had spawn and was stomping around... and then the giant snowman monster spawned and they started duking it out godzilla style... anyone who tried to fight would get stomped by both of them and then they would turn back to duking it out... by the time the snowman's timer ended there was a crowd of about 20 players just watching the throw down. good times...

Seeing a scrapper drag the entire contents of the Hollows back to the police area (I5-ish)...
My first mission in an Orenbega cave (cool as hell despite CoT being obnoxious)...
Getting hover for the first time, going to the ceiling in the zone and looking down...
My first Eden trial...
My first Hami raid...
Trying to fight level 52 Knives of Artemas at (iirc) level 48...
Turning a corner in Skyway and seeing Babbage walking toward me...
Seeing my first SupaTroll parade...
First flight into the Shadow Shard (although I had a few nightmares about giant eyeballs)...
Taking "full invisibility" and then getting one-shotted in Crey's Folly...
Using Nova for the first time...
Slotting Power Push for knockback and hitting... anything... FORE!
so much more...

Thank you! I remember these as well. I very much miss all the skittles, and freeing Slade, Gale, Quill and Tundra. I just wish there was a way to have given them some Ambrosia.

And Nova - helping a stone tank gather all those freaks in Crey's Folly..I miss it!

I used to love soloing those huge CoT maps. I was never one for role play with others, but there was something to the way a CoT map could help me tune everything else out in the real world...

Shield charge on scrapper before they fixed it (aka nerfed) I was in favor of the change it was way over powered

I had a fire/sd scapper IO out for soloing AV but he could dish out aoe. I went into a Mission Architect lvl 50 run set at 8x +4 and we where running a mission where we had mobs on two side of the building along the streets I broke off and started soloing the groups and I was keeping pace solo with the group of 7 on the other side of the buildings. I would round up the mob eats some reds  or build up shield charge +fire circle sword start moving to the next group with stragglers in tow and start the process over.  brings a  :'( (the reason this was an oh it reminded me of the early i2+ days of coh and stupid damage we dealt out.

Then the other was back in the I3 days I had a katana/sr scrapper and this was pre aoe limits and I let off a lotus drops and I got a crit on about 10 mobs yes that was a 1 in I never saw it again moments in the game ever. (oh the 5 slotted damage  :'()

What Ironwolf said. And not my first, but my favorite: Was running missions with a FF/psy defender and had a emp/elec buddy with me. We ran a mission where we had to defeat an emissary demon from the CoT faction. He conned as a purple epic boss and my buddy was sidekicked up. We engaged the demon, drained our inspirAtions tray, had to take turns holding aggro, and had a healthy dose o luck but we finally wore him down and best him. To this day it stands as my most intense gaming moment and we still talk about it now and then.

Another one, funny. Was running my necro/poison MM with the same friend, this time on skype so we could talk. My guys ran up to the bad guy and I said, "come on zombies, vomit!!!"  We had to stop for several minutes at the sheer fun and absurdity of it.

I'm sure a lot of people had their chance at an 'All X TF' of some form or another. The one that really got me was the first time I did an 'All PB Posi' right around the time it was revamped. My screen was white and shaking much of the time.

Yes, that first time you showed up in Atlas was awesome, and that loop of music still gives me chills (and makes me puff out my chest, if no one is looking!) :)

I dug out the sound and music files from the piggs and converted them all to MP3. I never really paid attention to much of the background music but some of it is really great to listen to. And of course some of the sound effects like leveling up or completing a mission are fun to listen to.

A few moments catch my memory:

1: Coming back from a long hiatus on my blaster, to suddenly see the sky turn orange and have zombies crawl out of the ground to disembowel me, then fighting my way back to the hill next to the Talos Island metro to join a battle line of thirty supers as we are surrounded by the nightmares.

2: Doing a raid against the Praetorian archvillain Chimera for the first time, and being designated the guy to draw him. I asked to have 'We who are about to die didn't want to." on my tombstone, which sparked a five minute discussion on what's the best funny thing to have on a CoH character's tombstone.

3: Coming back to Atlas Park at level fifty and Energy Thrusting a Blood Brother Slugger hard enough to fly over City Hall.

4: Coming to Independence port for the first time and nearly flying RIGHT into Lusca.

So was the ghost ship the first time I saw it...

First blitz trying to solo Frostfire with a cold slinging defender.

It was brutal, it was crazy, and it was frantic.  It was fun, though.  Frostfire was a favorite to run after that, once I knew what I was doing, just as pretty much the entirety of Jim Temblor's stories were in Faultline.

Other big moment for me?

Hmmmm.

The final moments of the last night.  It hit me really, really hard just standing there watching the scroll in Atlas Park on Justice, torch raised, logged in on Tubbius until the server dropped.  I sat there just staring at the computer, teary-eyed and frustrated, for quite a while that night.

Yes lots of great fond moments:

My fav was seeing the Halloween event...the totems you had to take down and the guardians that showed up.

Taking Mary McComber on for the first time! That was a long fun battle. Katie TF...I was already level 50 and been in the game 6 months before I did this TF...I did TF's once a week but never got around to this one for awhile. I just keep waiting and waiting for her to die because she had her witches thumping all of us pretty good.

One of my unusual Holy sh*t moments was a mission against the Council...they are in a normal building but there is one huge room with balconies all around and a pair of staircases (some of you might know this one)...the room looks empty...I told the team to wait...I did not trust an empty room...our tank had a habit of running in and grabbing everythings attention and being out of range of heals, died often...I rarely die, its against my personal rules...so I called up my Dark Servant...hit Phase Shift and walked into the middle...I was surrounded by a mob of about 50 council fighters (they appear out of nowhere) and my idiot Dark Servant fired a Fearsome Gaze at the upper balcony...down came another 50 warriors...I had less than 90 seconds to act...I layed down Tarpatch...killed my Shift...hit Tenebrous Tentacles, hit the power that lowers enemy accuracy on a villain and those around him/her, Fearsome Stare then finally my heal power to hopefully survive this disaster.
We were all staring at a wall of council enrapped in tentacles and fear skulls over their heads...I had cowed the whole room...after a minute someone yelled CHARGE! and my teammates finished off the room...it was fun :)

Another odd moment is when people say...what do you mean you can rez the whole group?...you would be surprised by how many don't know a dark defender can group rez if there is a villain to trigger the power off of.

One such moment for me was when I first played through the Montague Castanella story arc. My martial arts/super reflexes scrapper, Red Dragon (http://todogut.deviantart.com/art/Red-Dragon-reference-sheet-339466483) had delved into a spooky, creepy underground lair of the Circle of Thorns during the Rescue Percy Winkley (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Montague_Castanella#Rescue_Percy_Winkley) mission. While battling minions on stalagmites in a grotto, I encountered for the first time a Spectral Daemon (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Circle_of_Thorns#Spectral_Daemon).

It descended from the upper regions of the cavern, flying right up to my face, and opened its ghostly maw in a blood-curdling screech.

I was actually frightened and jumped backward in my computer desk chair.

I am a HUGE fan of the Mu Mystics of Arachnos.

I was in a group and behold, a Mu Vestments had dropped from a mob. I didn't know about salvages at all, but and I had assumed that taking this Mu vestment to the tailor would give me the cool clothes.

Imagine my despair when I realized you couldn't wear it and that it's only use was for inventions. That was when I learned of IO's though... But to wear one of those Mu clothes... I would have given everything.

Now that I think about it, the character creator could handle most of the parts.  You wouldn't be able to do the floating mummy thing but the textures could be used for a costume set.  Either that or add a Model Replacement Costume Power instead.  I remember a lot of people exclaiming about how cool the Mu Mystics were.  I'm sure they'd have appreciated something along those lines.

Heh.

My memory is deserting me ... but I was doing the Midnight Club missions (for the first time) where you defeat the Freakshow who are using an evil magic compact disc to unleash chaos on Talos Island. I had just finished the mission and the text said, "You emerge from the building to find the world has been restored to normal."

Suddenly the skies went dark ... and my very first zombie apocalypse started.

At first I thought I was in another instance and this was another part of the arc... was kind of disappointed to find out it wasn't. :D

It was so funny the first time this happened to my wife. She stuttered and stammered for a few moments, "What, I just, did I just? whu...?" Then she checked her inventory and saw what she got. She babbled for a few more moments then looked over at me and said, "I don't need this, what should I do with it?" I was the wrong person to ask since I tended to give a lot of mine away.

She always has better luck with the RNG in most games than I do except generally in CoH.

Seeing the ghost ship for the first time. Me and one other hero just standing there in awe, gradually turning and watching it sail off into the distance. Then there's seeing Lusca for the first time. Thinking all I'd be doing is fighting street thugs.

However the best one had to be when playing as a female character. I had someone following me, telling me how sexy I was etc. Really creepy stuff. When I told him I was a man he turned and legged it in the opposite direction! You had to be there but it was hilarious to watch him realise, turn and run! 'What's the matter!? I'm not sexy anymore!?'  ;D

For me..it was when I learned that the list of enhancements that a power could take were just that - a list of what could fit - not a requirement. I was not a forum reader at that time, had never played with a min-maxer before and really had no idea of optimum slotting strategies.

There was a respec tf in Terra Volta - and after, the other blaster asked me how I had my blasts slotted, because he noticed I never ran out of endurance. I told him, and he was about speechless - then explained to me how his was slotted. We did a demo against a freak - he about one-shotted a minion, and it took me 5 shots. Same powers, just different enhancements.

The whole min/maxing thing suddently occurred to me about a year ago.
I always slotted all my primaries to 5 or 6, and the secondaries to 4 or 5.
Yeah, I guess I'm a slow on the up-take.
I was thinking of using Mids to plan out cool builds, but I suspect that that we make me miss the game more.

Quite similar - I had several 50's and and started making builds in mids - but had never actually slotted an io set, until my invuln / ss - WOW!!

What a difference having some endurance made to that character, and everyone I made after him - how io's were claimed to be balanced (or the game balanced against so's?), I'll never know...

Levelling suddenly wasn't painful, jeez at times I wanted to slow down so I could run the arcs I had been used to struggling through solo for so many years lmao!!

Hell, I even teamed for fun rather than it being the easy option to skip a few levels...

And all that with some of the cheapest io sets you could get, literally I would buy the cheapest sets I could afford - but it didn't matter - the difference was like night and day.

Edit. Also - Macro's!!

My holy sh*t moment happened when my blaster was still lv.5. I saw Rikti Invasion zone warning and I did nothing. I was just standing there and scratching my head in confusion instead of running away. (I'm a combatant, so I shouldn't take cover. Right?) Soon strange looking characters were patrolling the zone I was in. I walked to the nearest alien grunt and opened fire.  I didn't end well. :(

The other moment was the time I shot a Circle of Thorn's ghost. They are as scary as hell, but they are not bulletproof! ;D

Oh hell... I had so many of those playing CoH over the years. Where to even start? The three I remember the best at the moment...

First time the Kronos Titan spawned. Had no idea he was coming. "Thats the biggest Malta Titan I have ever seen! Wait, is he coming at me?! Aack!"

During a Developer-run Nemesis invasion of Atlas Park... I was on my Shield/Super Strength Tank and had her build finalized and decked out in IO's and such. Then suddenly, Nemesis enemies just started showing up... Naturally, I jump into the frey and start Shield Bashing and Ground Stomping my way through them with glee before I suddenly realized that I was pulling a /lot/ of aggro... even for a tank! Apparently, (or, I'm guessing, really) a Dev was watching and was so impressed with how I was doing that they started spawning Nemesis Warhulks right on top of me! o_o;
I wish I could remember how I managed to survive that fight, but I did. Even had a couple of nearby players who saw what happened go 'Hot damn!'

Another time, on that same tank, I was in a mission against a lot of Pretorian Carnies (Carnival of War, faction, I think?) Apparently, they are able to confuse you... They hit me with that and, before I realized it, I had hit a nearby teammate with a super powered Uppercut! They went from nearly full HP to almost dead!
Them: "OWW! WTH?!"
Me: "Oh S#@$! Sorry!"

I also remember being about level 14 or so, the very first time, and having to try to contact Julius the Troll on that bridge in the hollows, and seeing a pair of steampunk-looking soldiers run towards and one-shot me. I kind of went "ok, what was that?" then popped my only wakey when it was clear, started to click on the contact again and saw the same mobs coming again. Before I could react I got one-shotted again. That was my first experience with griefers. Apparently some 40-something had a nemesis mission in the Hollows, and had an ambush outside the door, and decided to drag the ambush back and forth across the bridge to one-shot all the level lowbie folks there. I was incredible ticked, since this was maybe I4 or so when debt was huge (before they halved it multiple times). My tank had never been one-shotted to that point (SS/Invuln before it was nerfed even the first time), so I was pretty angry having it happen twice within 5 minutes. Also, some nearby level 50 tried to help and I refused, because I wasn't sure whether or not he was actually the griefer. Oh, well.

Something like that griefing happened to me in the Hollows, but closer to the atlas gate.  I was probably in the level 20's and it was a level 38.  I thought that it didn't look so tough.  Somebody yelled to stop attacking it.  I did, face-down.  I think it might have been a case of scrapper-lock.  After using up all my wakies and resurrection powers, I went to the hospital, came back and it was gone.  This was when death-debt wasn't a big deal though.

I remember when I first started playing COH back when I was a freshman or sophomore in high school, and every day was just one big 'holy sh*t' moment. The game just seemed so HUGE to me, and never-ending. I felt like I knew nothing about anything haha.

And back when the game first started, it took everyone soooooo much longer to level. Getting a travel power at level 14 was, like, a huge accomplishment lol. I think the holy sh*t moments I felt later on in the more recent updates just came from making a character I was really proud of, or during a really successful RP night w/ my supergroup.

Good memories. Good times. DEAR GOD SOMEONE GIVE US THIS GAME BACK.

When I fended off some malta ambushes with only 1/5th of my health left single handed.  I was playing a storm summoner and it was during a Lord Recluse Strike Force(I think the difficulty was +2 or +3).

The team engaged the Archvillain Slinger and rather than ever shooting the archvillain, I kept throwing down crowd control onto the ramp leading up to the team.  Freezing Rain to stop them in their tracks, and tornado's to disrupt their movement back towards the ramps.  I shot them with ST attacks as much as I could afford to with my endurance, I never got hit by the malta CC, I was very lucky as I had low health the entire fight and nothing got a hit in.  Hurricane was used to shove anything coming at me back onto the floor below.

I miss moments like that.

I can remember a few:
1) Kid Kourage was a teenage Scrapper and fairly small, got on a team with missions against MALTA.  Those Titans, laying dead on their sides were still taller than me.  Got into one fight where there were so many of them, I had absolutely no idea what I was attacking, or even in what direction, for several minutes.
2) Shatter Rat was an Earth/FF Controller; she was way over the defensive soft cap with that combination and her pool picks.  Had someone ask me to try some Architect missions he'd designed.  The first couple were a little lame but the third was a tunnel crawl.  We hit a cavern with a Nosferatu-esque boss which triggered a mass of ambushes at the same time.  He bailed the mission, and quit the team, but I stuck it out.  With Rat I was so used to having to nibble away one target at a time while ducking/containing the rest of the mob.  About a half hour later, the jerk sends me a tell, laughing about how his deathtrap scenario was unbeatable right about the time I was finishing the last stack.  I offered to let him rejoin the team and see for himself.  He couldn't believe there was just a "punk Earth Troller" and her Stoney on the entire map.
3) The day I got an HPE-580 64-bit Windows 7 machine to replace the Dell 2300 Windows XP machine I had been playing on and it could actually handle the frame rate of a Rikki event.  The old machine had been so much like being in a strobe light, with just random images and power recharge times.  Sad to say, it did Rikki events best by just maximizing my zone map over the screen, so it never had to resolve the visuals for me.  Oh, and then being able to game using Ultra mode instead of the lowest settings.  So awesome!!!

The thing that sticks out most in my head was when my Agent Smithers scrapper started to really come into his own. He was a Matrix knockoff. But I remember I'd just grabbed the flight pool because I planned on a lot o his skills being pool powers (he was getting superspeed, leap, and flight, since that fit the theme). Anyway, I remember being on a team fighting in an office, and some foe was raining fire down on us from in the air. Nobody had bothered to do anything about it yet, and I had Smithers leap off the balcony, and I activated hover right in front of the target. The two of them then began pummeling each other in mid-air and then I used Flurry to take him out. So.... epic. That was probably within my first month of playing and I felt like a god at that moment.

Fighting the Clockwork King (Mission on Boomtown Map IIRC) with my Scrapper(Katana/Super Reflexes) and watching the Stone tank kiss the floor, I stepped in and managed to hold agro long enough to complete the mission.

I can't remember if the tank was rez'd or not, but it was awesome being able to hold my own against an AV with nothing but SR defence buffs :)

I tried the same thing with Infernal, had fire DoT with his attacks, one hit and 99% health gone, tick tick tick dead!

I can't remember if the tank was rez'd or not, but it was awesome being able to hold my own against an AV with nothing but SR defence buffs :)

I tried the same thing with Infernal, had fire DoT with his attacks, one hit and 99% health gone, tick tick tick dead!

Yeah, I had that sort of thing happen a lot.  One mission it seemed that I was unstoppable, (not Ron Unstoppable), next mission I couldn't open the door without getting a faceplant.
Must be pixies.

I was reminiscing today and remembered a poignant moment in-game. I decided to avoid all baddies by taking a swim across Faultline to my new contact Doc Delilah. I was enjoying the peaceful open waters and appreciating the hue at sunset.
Then I was dead, 3 tentacles with mouths were looming over my corpse.

As a noob running around AP, that glorious moment when a generous Kin troller hits you with your first speed boost! YIPPEE!!! ;D

My first, and most... delightful... moment was in Steel Canyon.

I had just found the Magic Shop (they weren't mapped, you just had to *know* back in the day. This was I-2 or I-3, I forget.

I'm with what will be 2 of my future SG mates, and fairly new-ish players on the same level as I (we were in a group called the URA at the time... never knew what it stood for, but joined because they were in it, and I was having a blast with them and a couple other players)

Anyway, I'm in there buying DO's for the FIRST TIME EVER when one of them immediately drops DEAD, while exclaiming what the ****!?!"

I keep buying DO's going "What?" then my friend goes from full health to nothing... going "What!?!?!"

I run out of the Magic Shop to see a group of plants and rocks and stuff roaming down the street in front of the walled courtyard in front of the shop. Never seen the like before, and had no clue what it was. It was like a parade of vegetation and nature!!!

I move forward a bit and click on one just long enough to see a purple named thing take me down as well!

(Obviously it was a Devouring Earth ambush for a full group of some high-level folks in Steel, but I didn't have a clue!)

We were all bemused as it ambled down the street.. None of us were highly irritated since the hospital was up the street, but it was a fantastic find, and amazing for us to see something like that at the level we were...

Damn... Good times.

Just remembered another one, the time I joined an all-Defender STF.  We thought it would be fun to try and see how quickly we wiped.

So we start out, and as expected we were so buffed/debuffing that the mobs weren't that big a deal.

Then came Arbiter Sands... we expected to die quickly but instead it was like we blinked and he was dead.  We were in such shock that we nearly died from the mobs while we stood around asking where the AV was.

Next we took down Magus Mu'Drakhan just as quickly.  Regent Korol gave us some problems, but we lived.  Then Shadow Spider.  Viridian was just annoying because he ran so much.

By this time we understood the true power of Defender buffs.  We were almost equivalent to tankers in toughness and blasters in damage output, combined with multiple debuffs on the enemy.  It was glorious.

The rest of the TF was just as insane.  Black Scorpion was a tough nut to crack but Widow was the easiest one to defeat.  Mako was just a tougher viridian.

Recluse was the tough nut to crack... many attempts led to death until we took down the yellow and blue towers, then it was much easier.  We also had to use some of the geometry to our advantage to stick Recluse in place.

But we did it :)

All defender anything tended to be a lot of fun.

Or even just 'you can come so long as you have a buff set' runs.

First time I flew in the game. I seriously got disoriented and vertigo.

It was awesome, regardless; I'd only played games before that with 2.5D movement. Constrained to a walkmesh, which might change elevation or have simulated 'jumping'. Suddenly City of Heroes hit me hard with a true Third Dimension. I knew it was there before, but that gut realization that the game was fundamentally different overwhelmed me.

I don't know if I've already mentioned these elsewhere, but...

One that I fondly recall was when I was coming out of the Kings Row Wentworth's. I realized that there was a commotion going on, centered on the roof of the three-story building across the street to the north of Wenty's - the rooftop where the Clockwork were always building something. There were three or four Crey there, about level 40 (I distinctly remember that at least one was an ice tank). Apparently, some high-level had outrun an ambush, and they were one-shotting any lowbie that got too close - especially innocent passers-by who didn't know what was going on. I don't know how many were blown out of the sky. That went on for about 10-15 minutes, with me wishing that I had a high-enough toon to go get, to do something about it. Then, from the north, a hero flew in, and started taking them down, one after another. It was just like watching a superhero work, and we lowbies were cheering him on. (Did the devs ever fix it so that an abandoned ambush de-spawned after a while, or when the ambush target zoned, or something?)

Another incident (not so fondly remembered) was also in KR. I was in front of the hospital, going southwest to a mission door, when I saw a huge swarm of Clockwork in front of me, running to the northeast, right at me - and I mean LOTS of them. I knew that I couldn't take them, so I ducked into the hospital to get out of their way. There were enough of them that they must have overwhelmed the police drones, and some of them FOLLOWED ME INTO THE HOSPITAL LOBBY! Few things in the game surprised me as much as when those doors opened. It took me a few seconds of "That's not possible!" before I could gather my wits and start counterattacking.

Man, I miss this game.

"You're welcome."  Super Fire Dragon said and then went looking for cheese.
(ok, ok, it wasn't SFD, but nice story.)
