Title: Documentary Class Project - Doing it on CoH
Post by: LightofthePhoenix on February 15, 2013, 10:29:23 PM
**Edit: The video is complete and available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGcFC197rfQ **

Greetings, Titans.  I'm currently a college student, majoring in Production Technology and minoring in Cinema (to put it simply, film making).  I have an upcoming class project that involves making a (approximately) five minute documentary.  I got the green light from my professor to get to do said documentary on City of Heroes, touching a bit on the history of the game and going into the community coming together to try and save it.

In producing this documentary I'd like to use game footage and a bit of high quality fanart. This is where I could use some help.  I'd like to ask the members of the community if you would be willing to let me use some of the various videos and artwork that has been produced for the game.

Sure, I could just go download the videos from YouTube and use them without bothering to ask permission just to get the grade, but I'd like to give proper credit where it's due.  Especially since, if it works out as well as I'm hoping, I'd like to share it back to the community.

If you have game footage, demorecorded videos, fanart, screenshots, anything that's of a good quality (please, nothing too pixelated), please provide a link in a reply here, through a pm, or email me a link/file at risko_vinsheen@yahoo.com .   I would also welcome any suggestions people have for information I should include.  Keep in mind, though, that this is only going to be around 5 minutes (I can go longer or shorter if needed but 5 minutes is the sweet spot) so I likely can't go into nearly as much detail on some things as I would like.

You're welcome to use any of my videos for the project, if you'd like. I'd suggest hitting my website and downloading the WMVs from there rather than converting them off YouTube, the quality will be better.

Sent you a CoHDemo file I've been working on, if it's any good or not I'll leave you to decide.

Good Luck.

Would it be possible for you to post your Documentary here and on Youtube when you done?  Be great for the movement to save CoH!  Not to mention I like to see it.

M'kay so I'm still in the process of gathering up videos and such.  But I'm having some difficulties locating decent quality versions of the cinematic trailers.  To be honest the only copies of those I've ever found are on YouTube and they were all uploaded at a time that YouTube didn't support anything fancy.  Would anyone happen to have some good high quality versions of them?  Talking the cinematic trailers for City of Heroes, City of Villains, City of Hero, and Going Rogue.

I've got a LOT of them downloaded. Let me see if I can get them up onto my server for you.

EDIT: Okay, just to warn you - a single compressed file of the ones I have is 4GB in size (I've got like 65 of the official videos, which also includes the player-submitted stuff for the contests they had a while back, the ad for HeroCon, etc.) If you want the whole thing, I'll see if I have enough Dropbox space to make it available, otherwise I'll upload it to my server for download. (Coz I don't know how to make it available via torrent.)

Wow.  That's a lot of videos.

I'm really just looking for the cinematic/cg trailers. (the ones not made using ingame visuals)  But then I suppose I could use some of the others, like some of the individual Issue trailers.  I don't know, I wouldn't say I need all of them but the greater variety of footage the better, of course.

I won't ask you to upload all of it because that's a good chunk of space, but if you feel any particular ones are worth including I wouldn't turn them down.

Okay, I'll go through and get the best ones, then make that available. Currently at work so it'll have to wait til I get home.

You can use clips from my youtube channel as well if you like.

Heh, I'd been wondering on and off if a documentary film about CoH should happen.

Well it's complete! The first draft of it anyways, gotta let others decide (namely my professor) if it requires a second draft.  Wouldn't mind some second opinion from fellow players, too.  It ended up going over the 5 minute target by 2 and a half minutes but there was just so much to talk about, I had problems thinking of where I could trim it down.

Also I only realized after I'd completed it and handed it in I'm not sure if I actually used any Samuraiko videos, but still gave you credit. >.> I blame it on lack of sleep and a great deal of caffeine by the time I was done.  Just consider it a special thanks for all the help you provided, especially in helping me get those other videos.

City of Heroes deserves a much more impressive documentary than this, but I made do.  ANYWAYS! Here's the link, unlisted for now but you're welcome to share it with friends if you think it's worth sharing.

That was incredible laddie.  Well done.

If you don't get a decent grade on it I'm sure we could find a few caped individuals who would want a word with your instructor.  ;)

By all means!  I've gotten a lot of good feedback from it so I feel comfortable sharing it with the world.

According to my mom it even got some tears from my sister, and she never even played the game.  :D

impressive video.  I don't know what grade your teacher gave you, but you get an A++ in my book.

Wow, very good video!* If you'd allow, I'd like to subtitle it in french. Here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b6Pprbwahk) was my last (and late, if only) attempt at such subtitling.

*: even if it was missing one of the nerdiest videos ever about CoH's closure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAJlQ6o8p9g)... ;-)

Ugh, I had tears in my eyes! I don't watch many CoH videos for that very reason. The part that really got me was talking about the players fighting back. Being part of #SaveCoH, the rally, and everything that came after it was so rewarding. Thank you for making that wonderful video and sharing it with us all.

It's awesome to see just how quickly this is spreading.  I went to bed this morning and it only had like 86 views, 18 likes, and 10 comments.  Now it's 307 views, 56 likes, and 17 comments.  Thanks everyone for sharing it :) I'm glad you all liked it.

Could you please verify two things:
-First, can you import this file (right click, save as) (http://vsrteam.power-heberg.com/City_of_Heroes_Documentary_We_Are_Heroes_This_is_What_We_Do.rt) in youtube as subtitle, and
-Second, are the first two minutes a correct transcript of your video :-)

Gotta go to sleep now, will finish transcription or begin translation tomorrow after House, M.D.

Congrats and well deserved Risko. I thoroughly enjoyed it and passed it along to other players as well.

I think it would've gotten a much bigger response still if there was some way to get it in front of more CoH alumni. A big challenge with anything here on the Titan that I'm seeing is that only a fraction of the community is here. There is (at least one) facebook group, another large group on DA, several dedicated websites, and many of the other MMO's out there have forum sections devoted to CoH veterans... there's just no convenient way to get a message to everyone at once.

Yeah the song is called City of Heroes by David Allen Baker.  Not only does it fit our fair city in name, it also fits in the overall lyrics of the song.  It may as well have been written specially for the game/community.  I first heard it on the Cape Radio in the months leading up to the shutdown and I knew as soon as I decided on making this documentary I had to fit it in somehow.

If you'd like to hear the song in its entirety, the only place on YouTube I know to find it is this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fh1mac5Jg8

You can also find it on his website, davidallenbaker.com and it's free.

Not a plug, btw, just sayin'. :)

 8)  Your documentary class project http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGcFC197rfQ was excellent!  (As you can see, I only just now found this thread.)  I hope you got an equally good grade for your project.  Regardless, thank you for doing the community and City of Heroes proud with your video.  Keepin' the faith and hope alive.   :)

Nice video.  Now I'm depressed again.  This game was the first MMO I ever played, and in many ways it is like your first love.  You will never find anything like it.  My anger at NCSoft burns with the fury of a thousand suns.  They took the one game that was unique and special away.  I will never forgive them.
