UPDATES

Wow, I didn't realize that there were so many other conventions coming up!  I guess it is that time of the year!  Here's a list of some others at which anyone who is going can help us out as well:

October 11, 12, 13, 14: New York Comic Con (http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/) (New York City, New York)
October 13, 14: Alternative Press Expo (http://www.comic-con.org/ape/) (San Francisco, California)
October 19, 20, 21: Dallas Comic Con Fan Days (http://www.scifiexpo.com/DCC/fandays.html) (Dallas, Texas)
October 26, 27, 28: Wizard World Comic Con (http://www.wizardworld.com/) (Austin, Texas)
October 26, 27, 28: Hal-Con (http://hal-con.com/) (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
November 1, 2, 3, 4: Youmacon 2012 (http://www.youmacon.com/) (Detroit, Michigan)
November 3, 4: Long Beach Comic & Horror Con (http://www.longbeachcomiccon.com/) (Long Beach, California)
November 18: So Cal Comic Con (http://www.socalcomiccon.com/) (Oceanside, California)

ORIGINAL POST

Hey all, the timing of NCsoft's announcement totally sucked, being the exact weekend of two major regional gatherings (PAX and Dragon*Con) of the City of Heroes demographic and not giving us time to plan something like this.  However, we have another chance to reach out to the gaming and especially the comic fan community with the New York Comic Con (http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/) coming up weekend after next (October 11-14).  Here are a few ideas about what I'd like to do.

Flyers

One of the best way to get the word out is to hand out flyers in locations around the venue.  Print out a bunch, take them with you, and give them to passers-by headed into the convention.  The people who run the con might not allow you to do so inside Javits Center, but you should be okay on sidewalks outside the venue.  I'll try to get in touch with the event organizers this week and nail down more information regarding any limitations on where you can do this.

Please keep in mind that I'm not asking you to spend the whole convention handing out flyers; I know that there are people and events you want to take part in.  Having been to several of these conventions before, though, there is sometimes a lot of "dead time" that you spend in between speakers and getting autographs, time that you probably kill in the dealer room and whatnot.  If you can spend an hour or two over the course of the day handing out flyers, that would be immensely helpful.

There are a few flyers posted in this thread (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,4994.0.html), and I'll post more here as I get them.  Ideally, your flyers will be visually grabbing, have a link to http://www.savecoh.com/ (http://www.savecoh.com/), and have a brief explanation of our plight.  Remember, most people will probably glance at it just long enough to throw it in the trash, so keep it simple.

Speaking of which, please don't be offended if people take the flyer and throw it away or refuse to take it to begin with.  Don't take it personally, and for the love of whatever deity you hold sacred, please don't get into an argument or fight with anyone.  Remember that you're representing our community!

Oh, and if you have a City of Heroes t-shirt from any of the Hero-Cons, meet-and-greets, or Player Summits, wear it!  (Unless you're going in costume, in which case we really need you to hand out flyers!)

Working with Dealers

For those of you unfamiliar with these conventions, they always have a really large display floor where dealers in various types of merchandise peddle their stuff.  If you know any dealers that are attending, please contact them beforehand, tell them who we are and what we're doing, and ask if they'll put some flyers on their table(s).  You can tell them that if they will, I'll be sure to plug them here on our forums in a special thread dedicated to vendors who help us, where a lot of NYCC visitors will undoubtedly see it.

If you don't, take a bunch of flyers with you, talk to some of the vendors (especially ones selling comics), and ask as you're walking around if they'd be willing to put some flyers on their table.

If you see Save City of Heroes flyers on a vendor's table please be sure to stop and tell them thanks for helping us!  If you have a few spare bucks in your pocket, think about buying something from them to reinforce the thought that helping us was a great idea!

Talking to Personalities

There are going to be a bunch of notable personalities there from the comic and entertainment world.  If you see an opportunity to mention City of Heroes and our situation, please take the opportunity to do so.  But one caveat: Please be respectful!  If you stand up in the middle of a session and start yelling, "Save City of Heroes!!!" I will personally come smack you in the head.  If you have a few minutes with one of these personalities, though, and can get (for example) a picture of one of them holding a flyer or something, that's golden.  Even if you just mention us at an autograph session so that if they see a tweet or something they might retweet it, that would be great.

Take some flyers with you to these sessions also.  There is time before and after, and especially if you're waiting in autograph lines, to talk to other fans and give them flyers.  Shoot, for that matter, if you don't already have something you want the person to autograph, get them to autograph a Save City of Heroes flyer!

As a side note, Sean Astin is attending.  If you talk to him and/or get his autograph, please tell him that it really meant a lot to us that he retweeted the Save City of Heroes tweet.  I'm a big fan of his ever since I saw Goonies back in the 80s, so that was kind of a BFD to me.  Also, if someone gets an autograph from Peter "Fifth Doctor" Davison for me, you will be my best friend forever, I'm just sayin'...  :)

Taking Pictures

This is probably the most important part of this Call to Action.  GET PICTURES.  Specifically, these are pictures that we can really use:
Anything you get, feel free to e-mail me at tonyv@cohtitan.com and I'll try to use it in a press release or, at the very least, get it posted somewhere for everyone to know what we're up to.

FPATV!

Brilliant idea. I wish I lived on the right coast. Not to muddy the waters for this call, but there are likely many similar events happening throughout the country for those who can't make it to NYCC. Here's a short list of a few I found.

Las Vegas Comic Con September 29-30 www.lasvegascomicexpo.com

Alternative Press Expo October 13-14 www.comic-con.org/ape

Long Beach Comic Convention  November 3-4  www.longbeachcomiccon.com

So Cal Comic Con,  November 18  www.socalcomiccon.com

Wizard World Comic Con,   Austin, TX Oct 26-28 www.wizardworld.com

I'm not in a position to get to NYC, but... I know a coordinator for a much smaller con. I've had her pass along some basic news stories about us already. I'll contact her about this.

For still being in the planning phase, that post is full of win already!
The end result should be impressive, and goodluck everyone attending, you're like our very own Omega Team! (Except you get to meet cool people and stuff instead of facing certain death! :P)

Don't they usually have group costume contests at these things? Imagine a horde of players dressed as their toons, all walking out onto the stage, and raising torch props.

Everyone relax. I've been slaving in my engineering lab for the past 2 months, and my MiB friend has given me the names and addys of everyone on this board.  You should all be receiving your temporary jetpack power in the mail within the next week.

I live in Binghamton, NY and would love to help!

I've been wanting to attend NYC comic con for a while and seeing as how much CoH means to me, this gives me a great excuss to go... However, I have a church commitment on Sunday at 1:00 PM.  So this just leaves me with two major questions before I can seriously consider it.

1) Is there anywhere I can crash for the nights in question?
2) What does the bus, train etc schedule look like?

I would love to help make this happen, but it is definately not something I can do on my own.

EDIT: I just spoke to my wife, who use to do costuming for Disney, and she said she would help me create a costume for my signature character for this.  Anyone else remember the CoH RL costume contest?  If we could get  a bunch of people dressed up as their mains, that would be amazing!

Is there any system change.org has that enables you to transfer door-to-door signatures to the online one? Or perhaps with a portable app? If so, we could get more names for it remotely.

If anyone has a tablet and an internet connection, you could get them to sign the change.org petition right there and then.

Just found out about the Dallas Comic Con on October 19-21.  Stars like Felicia Day, Bruce Campbell, and Sean Astin are slated to be there.  Stan Lee is also slated to be there, but dunno if he might be able to help, considering the history between Marvel and CoH.

Personally, I don't have the fundage or the time to go to this, but I thought I'd throw this in here, in case there are people in the area that might want to spread the word.

It might help to go "the smaller the better." Nobody wants to hold on to an 8x11 sheet of paper all day. If you make something smaller they can put into their pocket - or if you're willing to print out some postcards or even "business" cards that advertise SaveCOH that might help.

Actually a business card would be a great idea.  Head it with "Save City of Heroes."  List the petition, the Titan Network, the CoHSunset email, maybe 1 or 2 more things, and thats it.  Maybe stick one of those AP33 drawings made on the official boards on it too.

So I don't think anything is effected in light of the news from Status Update 2 from today...

Who's going to NY Comic Con and what materials are you brining?

Currently I have no room, no tickets and no printed material.  But, I still plan to "storm the gates" even if its 10F and snowing.  If anyone is planning on being there please send me a PM so this can be as best of a colaberative effort as we can make it.

Peter David is semi-publisher-neutral, plus he writes for games, as well. The rest, are either under contract to a potentially hostile publisher or are not people I'm familiar with.  Someone more savvy in the industry could probably be of more help.

But, seriously, I'll try to bring some visual with me and at least talk to people about it and why it should be important to them, even if they aren't CoH players, but as MMO players.

Maybe those who can get to Comic Con can organize a flash mob/meet-up. We've been talking in a few threads about getting some IRL torch-bearers to spread around the web, this could be a good chance. Since it's a con, and an extremely populated one at that, using a real torch would be a huge no-no (and bad press!) but we can make homemade torches or buy costume/prop torches. Halloween being right around the corner is a major asset to us.

Although I can't make it to NYCC, I can absolutely help organize things from the virtual end if we want to try this.

Statesman will be at NYCC.

No, not Jack specifically, but I will be going to NYCC in costume as Statesman.  After talking to my wife, we thought it would be easier and more apropriate to pull this together instead.  Due to time factors alot of the details will not be in place, but it should hopefully make an impression.

If you care to make your own here's all you need:

Cap America costume ($30 from Walmart)
Red Material (to sew up the pattern)
White Material (to make the stars)
Red Cape
Plastic Broach
Centurian Helmet
Silver Spray Paint
Torch

I'll try to get some pictures up... but due to time constraints I think it will only be half done.  Also due to the short notice of the announcement, I was only able to get a ticket for Friday.  I still need to buy a greyhound ticket, so my plans are still flexable, but here it is.

Thur Afternoon: Leave Binghamton
Friday: Attend Comic Con
(Note: I am only attending the con specifically for #SaveCOH, so 90% of my time will be standing around as Statesman, Torch in hand.  Hopefully others can join me as well in this effort).
Sat: Stand outside Comic Con
Sat Night: Leave NYC for Binghamton

Now... here is where I need some help:

1) Place to crash for the Night (Thurs & Fri)
2) Someone to bring printed materials
-Funds are too limited for me to bring any
-BUT if you feed me handouts, I'll happily share

See you in the City,

Graphite

I know it's a long shot, but is there any way to get one of those morning shows to cover it.. say like The Today Show.  Do they report on things such as this?  I know they report on other crap people aren't interested in.  With it being local, maybe they could send a crew?  I'm sure they schedule stuff well in advance, but worth a ponder...... *trails off mumbling to herself*

Quick update.

Costume is nearly complete.  We added rubber fishing boots with red spray paint and it is looking very sharp.  Final detail work happening now with the cowl and stars.  I have a greyhound bus leaving thrus afternoon for City and leaving NYC early Sun morning.  My room atm is a hostal in Manhattan.  I will also be bringing three tiki torches with me (without fuel).  My plan is to find a public space/main lobby type area and see if anyone will join me in a City Hall type vigil simular to what is running right now in AP33.  If I'm really really lucky I'll be able to convince the ticket gate to sell me a press or vender pass for Sat and be allowed to continue through the second day.

Wish me luck!

If enough people call in to NBC's New York newsdesk (NBC 4 New York), there's a definite chance. It may not be by Today, but NBC NY local is still pretty big. Or, if it's national/international, NBC national nightly news. But you need a lot of people.

Alternatively, if people are outside Rockefeller Center early enough with big signs, the anchors may talk to them.

NYCC is definitely covered by news outlets there; I grew up in the NYC metro area and can remember tons of stories.

Hey guys, I'm sorry I haven't been more active in this thread--much less than I've wanted to be.  My day job has been rearing its ugly head for the past week.  As soon as I sat down this morning I had to get on a conference call that lasted literally until someone from the next shift arrived at 7:00pm tonight.  To add insult to injury, I've been feeling a bit under the weather the past couple of days, having some nasty headaches and feeling woozy, which means that I've crashed much earlier than I normally would.

But I digress...

So is anyone going other than Graphite?  If there's something I can do to help you get flyers or other materials, I want to help out.  I wish I could hop on a plane and go myself (especially since I've never been to New York City), but that would be a bit pricey, and I'd rather dedicate my resources to helping people out who will be there already.

OK, here we go with a few upcoming conventions in Florida.
http://www.tampabaycomiccon.com/ (http://www.tampabaycomiccon.com/)  October 20-21. A bit tight for time but might be possible.
http://www.stonehill.org/necro.htm (http://www.stonehill.org/necro.htm) otherwise known as Necrocomicon in St. Petersburg. October 26-28.
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Daytona-Beach-Comic-Book-Convention/109085789161874 (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Daytona-Beach-Comic-Book-Convention/109085789161874) November 18. And, just about the last one of the calendar year.

For those of us down South (and for those of you Northerners who just want to get out of the cold) this might be a chance to spread the word a bit more.

You'll definitely attract attention standing either outside the main doors, or just inside them to the side of ticket pickup. Please be careful walking around that area at night though --- I don't know how familiar you are with NYC, but it's not the safest. I was nervous walking through the streets this mornig even.

You MIGHT want to ask AZ Powergirl at Artist Alley table P16 if she'll be willing to have some Save COH fliers on her table. She's a very nice lady, and I don't know her well enough to be comfortable asking her, but she does a LOT of superhero cosplay, and that's her table at NY Comic Con. (I'm terribly shy, and I only know her because she's modeled some of my clothes as a favor through a mutual friend once.)

I am working there, but will walk around when I am not... I made a Save COH top hat... LOL I will be at one of the Stylin Tee booths, and if anyone has fliers I can ask if they will put them out... if they let me wear my hat I will, if not you might have to ask where Starr is....

That's a great Statesman costume!!!

Thanks for doing it!

You'd think with the popularity of Avengers, and even the Arrow TV show that just started companies like NCSoft would be trying anything to hold onto a Supers related game.

The Problem with that is that the concept of the Super Hero is mostly popular in the West particularly US and UK.. not as big in the East.. especially Korea..

Enjoy!

I got a kinda good idea to go along with the Cons If you see an NCsoft booth or panel, find a way up to the mic or a mic and say "I'ma let you finish but NCsoft should sell City of Heroes." and then walk off. Or something like that.

Probably? But the message you'd deliver in those few seconds would have to be pitch-perfect to resonate with more than one or two people. I'm not saying that it shouldn't have been (or still be) done, but...plan out what to say very carefully if you find yourself with a soap box like that to stand on. :)

Honestly, I wouldn't do anything that would get you kicked out, especially if that comes off as you being an annoyance and turning opinion against you.  But if NCsoft is there (are they?), it certainly wouldn't hurt to spend some good handing-out-flyer time around their booths and/or presentations.

Drop me a PM if you need more flyers or anything, I'm willing to help out on that.

Actually, I'm kinda turning it around; I need folks to let me know what they need.  I don't know how big Youmacon is or how many of what materials you want to distribute.  I guess I was just saying that if there's something you need that you don't have, let me know, and I'll try to do what I can to support you.

Having done....hundreds of conventions...just ask if you can stand in the lobby or near the gaming or dealers room on Friday and Sunday passing out flyers.  I really do not think that anyone will have any problem with you doing that.  Realistically speaking the badge/membership is just to restrict the panels and other activities to paying members.  Anyone can stand in the lobby or a hallway.  Double check with ConOps, but I bet they will let you.

Here at World Fantasy I have been giving out flyers with every autograph, gave several people stacks of flyers to distribute at comic shops at their homes and left stacks of flyers at the flyer table.  Actually had someone ask about the shutdown and the Titan efforts at our special guest panel.

Especially if she talks to a few local authors known to hang out at a certain Toronto book store. If you ask Robert J. Sawyer (I *know* he is putting in an appearance), he'd be happy to direct you, since he used to work there.

So Saterday I had no camera and i stood or walked from 9 am to 2 am passing out flyers and talking to people but Sunday i brought Rockdeadman/Mike Dynamo with me to help...only had 4 hrs of sleep but here's the pics. The rest are at this link http://s791.beta.photobucket.com/user/vmieu/library/Youmacon%202012?view=media#/user/vmieu/library/Youmacon%202012?&_suid=1352075466262020249793713686315 (http://s791.beta.photobucket.com/user/vmieu/library/Youmacon%202012?view=media#/user/vmieu/library/Youmacon%202012?&_suid=1352075466262020249793713686315) I didn't want to post 60 pics here. In advance...I'm tired sorry if i misspell stuff or say stuff in an incoherent way. Oh, everyone is interested in the gamers bill of rights thing we are working on.

Saturday some of the guys from Thatguywiththeglasses.com were there and i bought a dvd from them, had them sign it, then gave them some flyers and asked them if they'd plug cohtitan and #savecoh for us. Since many of the people on the site review games i thought this was a good idea. They didn't say yes but they didn't say no either. I hope they do it.

This guy had suggestions for us. He said it sounds like they have a legal issue. Hire a lawyer, or find one that plays, and ask them to see if there are legal issues tying up the ip. He said they could have lawsuits pending on it based on how abruptly it was closed and the way they are handling it. He said maybe someone owns part of it and they can't legally sell it or something. He also said that modders are the best people for us to get to help build the new game. They can make it similar without breaking any laws and they are good at it.

This table was a game company from Wisconsin called Gaming Generation and they let us put flyers on their table. They do a charity to bring games to kids with cancer. CoX would have been perfect for them! They provide computers and consoles to cancer kids to bring the gaming community to them becase they may be picked on by other kids in real live because they are different but on the game they are just like everyone else. This is a cool charity and it's called Better>Gaming if anyone is interested. facebook.com/betterthangaming (http://facebook.com/betterthangaming)

A bunch of other places let us leave flyers including youmacons registration and info tables in both buildings. The rest of the cool costumes and stuff are at the link.

Maybe we shouldn't heed this guy's advice. He looks like a clown.

Just kidding.

TY guys, i'm still very tired and my legs hurt so so bad...It was worth it though

Anyway we should work on the bill of rights thing and maybe make it like a company like BBB where you register with us and you must follow these guidlines. When you do that you get our bill of rights logo to put on your games thus ensuring to your customers that their money is safe with your company.

Good job Moonfyire!

Results at World Fantasy con:

1000 flyers.  Passed out one with each personal autograph.  Gave two volunteers about 200 each to take home.  Left the rest in 200-lot batches on the flyer table.  ALL were taken.

500 flyers left at Silver Snail Comic Shop in Toronto; got the enthusiastic cooperation of all three employees at the time, including one who already knew about SaveCoH.

The Snail is THE comic shop in Toronto and their new location is in the heart of downtown, in Toronto's equivalent of Times Square.

Haven't made it to the new store. Think I will head down in December when I have time that I am not spending in game.
