Non-spoiler review.
Black Panther. 9.5 out of 10. Why are you still reading this, when you could be standing in line to see it?
The Good:
The cast. I believe this movie has the strongest cast of any MCU movie. Chadwick Boseman is awesome as T"Challa. Michael B. Jordan has an extremely strong portrayal as Erik Killmonger. Danai Gurira as Okoye - the head of the Dora Milaje - could have been a throw away character but is a very interesting and deep secondary character. I have very few complaints about the casting in the movie from top to bottom. I'd say the weakest cast member was probably Martin Freeman, but that's less due to his acting and more to the role he had to play in this movie as the outsider.
The portrayal of women. The women in general are very strong characters, from Angela Basette as T'Challa's mother to Letitia Wright as his sister and head of science and technology for the country of Wakanda - aka Wakandan's answer to Tony Stark. Okoye in particular I found very well done as a character. She was strong, had personality, had her own internal compass and her own internal conflict and her own internal resolutions.
The African connection. Better and more appropriate people than I will better articulate this, but the movie's infusion of a foreign culture that is not just a derivative of western American culture that stands alone is commendable. The movie isn't just diverse in casting, or even in point of view, but in total perspective. When Shuri wide-cracks casually about "colonizers" it seemed perfectly normal.
The villain. Erik Killmonger is in my opinion the second best MCU villain after Loki and probably one of the best super hero movie genre villains period. He reminds me most of Magneto from the first X-Men movie, coincidentally and amusingly also named Erik. Magneto is a Holocaust survivor who believes humanity will do to mutants what the Germans once did to Jews and others, and he's not entirely wrong. He believes this justifies any act in his war against humanity. Erik Killmonger has a similar kind of motivation in that whether you agree with him or not, you can understand him. His actions brand him a villain, but he isn't an impossible to understand one. You almost root for him.
The Bad:
The CGI was weak at times, but it was never distracting for me. Also, my popcorn was a little stale.
Watch for:
In the prologue there is an appearance by an younger T'Chaka, T'Challa's father. He bears an uncanny resemblance to John Kani, the actor who played T'Challa in Captain America the Winter Soldier. That's because he's played by John Kani's son. No CGI de-aging there.
Overall:
What, you're still here? Go, buy ticket. Watch movie.
There's a lot I could say about this movie. But bottom line, its a great movie. It is a great super hero movie, and it is a great MCU movie, but even if you've never seen an MCU movie before, even if you've seen MCU movies before and hated them, go see this movie. This is just a really good film.
