Friday, December 7th is SpikeTV's Video Game Awards, Hosted by Samuel L. Jackson (yes, that one). As part of it, Entertainment Weekly has set up a poll of 10 games to choose from (http://ew.com/vga (http://ew.com/vga)). Unfortunately, it is only their 10 hand-picked games. BUT, if you look a little closer, the author of the poll and the Entertainment Weekly article is Darren Franich, and he kindly left his twitter handle: @DarrenFranich (https://twitter.com/DarrenFranich).
My proposal is two fold:
1. Go to http://ew.com/vga (http://ew.com/vga), but do not vote for one of their titles. Instead, add a comment: "Best Game of the Decade: City of Heroes #SaveCoH"
2. Go to Twitter and tweet to @DarrenFranich (https://twitter.com/DarrenFranich) : "Best Game of the Decade: City of Heroes #SaveCoH".
We got 21, 845 signatures to a Save CoH petition, even a fraction of that can raise eyebrows, especially on a very visble site like Entertainment weekly.
Edit: 2 requests -- leave the message short and sweet as these are reporters....they'll investigate. Also, only post/tweet once -- unique messages are what count here.

Had a computer hiccup. Meant to add.... He is getting the message. Don't stop now! Guy has 4000+ followers and works at a leading industry magazine. Every time he mentions CoH is good for us. I mean, don't call him names or annoy him, but keep us in his mind. Now if we just had Samuel Jackson's twitter feed and could convince him to mention CoH on air.

I'm not expecting a surprise reveal that CoH wins -- just visibility, and that's fine by me. Drown him in CoH <3

As stated by Jackson himself on Jimmy Fallon as well as stated on his official website @SamuelLJackson is his official Twitter name. Just thought I'd throw that out there for you guys.

I know how you feel. I got one about a year ago in order to deal with a problem with CoH Customer Service. The NC Soft Twitter feed was much faster than any other means of contact.
Haven't touched it since then.

It is and ithosts a software section in some issues. As it turns out, it is collaborating with the SpikeTV gaming awards this year and EW's poll winner will be announced at the awards ceremony.

Probably, like most people, our Computer deck has not moved much since we set it up. Saying that, for the last 6+ years I have played this Most Fantastic of MMO's, City of Heroes.
Today I took to cleaning the computer nook. That cigar burn, that was the Clockwork King. Those soda stains under the right side, that was my first Rikti Ship Raid.
Each Stain, Marks, Burn, etc. was a Memory of my Battles in CoX. Long live the Heroes I fought with and those Villains I fought against.

As long as you are Tweeting someone... http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6606.0.html
Stephen Colbert is a very big fan of fantasy and science fiction. He's a geek. He owns Captain America's Shield. He has his own super hero animated series. Tek Jensen. Okay, so it only ran on his own show and for only six episodes but....
Tweet Him! It would so suite his style of comedy to mention something about an member of the Axis of Evil (sure, it's not North Korea, but his on air personality is always a little fuzzy on geography outside of the US) trying to destroy American Heroes.

I'm leary about bombarding celebrities like Sam Jackson or Stephen Colbert -- in this case, Darren opened the door by hosting this poll and so I feel fine with bombarding him with CoH <3
-
I was joking mostly about Samuel Jackson, but this really is in Colbert's balliwick. And the Colbert Report twitter feed is Comedy Central, so maybe just send tweets there.

Wouldn't S. Korea, japan, and China be the Asymptote of Evil? Sure, they're not openly seeking the destruction of <insert Western country/region>, but it is a region of serious competition with Western business, particularly for jobs and manufacturing.

The Colbert Report has a long running joke about the Axis of Evil as quoted by George Bush. Iraq, Iran and North Korea.

My messages:
To me it has to be City of Heroes. Plenty of games tell a good story, but CoH was unparalleled in how much players were able to make their own. Only some of the pen-and-paper RPGs offer a similar freedom. With your own characters, quests and buildings/bases you could create your own world in the game. I only know of Minecraft in offering a similar kind of freedom.
@DarrenFranich Best Game of the Decade: City of Heroes or Minecraft. Nothing else gives the player as much control and freedom.
It's the two games I play, because of the freedom they give. These are my pure and honest opinion.

I think we can make a bigger impact if on the entertainment weekly we also go and like or thumbs up every ones or a selected post about COH and save Coh. so it shows more impact that we spend time on their site to like all that agree with us.

When I left my comment, I was a little long winded...
" City of Heroes should be here. As an MMORPG, this game pioneered many new ideas you still don't see with even new games.
A massive Costume Creator matched by no one, you truly could create you own character not just in powersets, but appearance.
So many power combinations that a single account with paid VIP subscription could not hold every possibility, and new powersets were being introduced every few months.
Architect Entertainment allowed you to create your own mission content.
The Super Group Base allowed you to completely create a space for not just your characters, but those in your supergroup. The customization level of this was on par with maybe Minecraft and above The Sims franchise.
Teaming: As a player you could solo, or team with as many as 8 for mission or AE content. With a league you could push the boundries further by Teaming Teams. I was on one League with 32. What's more, the Super Sidekick system allowed the whole group to be at the level of the mission holder (if too far below, they'd be one level lower) which helped friends with new alts still team with each other no matter what character was being played.
The game was still viable after 8 years with a playerbase around 100k. Number of unique characters created... 43 million... and that was not the cap possible with the customization allowed.
There was so much more to CoH, and I am sad that NCSoft shut down this work of love and disbanded one of the best group of developers in the business. We still hope for a hero to swoop in and save the day, but though the lights have been turned off, our community is still strong and our voices raised high in tribute to this great game.
#SaveCoH"

Okay... I put in a comment.
But, like a few others, I'm a FB/Twitter luddite. sorry.
Here's my comment... I'll admit, it's a little amped, but hopefully not in a bad way. :P
You're kidding me, right?
With the popularity of superhero movies, you only have one (lame) superhero video game on the list?
City of Heroes was the first and longest running superhero MMO of the decade. How could you not include it?
The game was groundbreaking on so many levels.
It broke the "gear grind" mold by creating a system to build powers separate from your costume/gear.
This, in turn, gave rise to an incredibly robust character and costume creator the likes of which has not been replicated in any other game (no, not even CO).
This, in turn, allowed players to connect with the characters they created on a level that other MMOs and video games just don't even come close to.
Speaking of players connecting to their game, CoH encouraged this in so many ways: character creation, the ability to write a character biography, customized character battle-cries, player created missions, supergroups and bases (omg... the bases), power customization...
And about powers... holy mother of choices... Batman wishes he could have 1/10 the power choices in CoH.
As for content, the word "plethora" comes to mind.
Have I mentioned the chat system? OMFrellinG. In what other game can you have a dozen channels up and running?... that's in addition to the standard system channels.
City of Heroes may not have had the player numbers that some of those other games had, but just because something is a "blockbuster" doesn't necessarily mean it's a quality product.
City of Heroes was a quality game. At the very least, it deserves an honorable mention.

Done (a bit long winded here as well)...
"Best Game of the Decade: City of Heroes (and Villains) #SaveCoH
No other game has the gameplay, engaging stories and community robust enough to keep engaged everyone in the family from 6 - 46. Our entire family could create whatever character we thought up in our imaginations with whatever concept we wanted and it would be OURS, rather than trying to shoe-horn us into playing a set character from existing lore (as in DCU, Marvel, WoW or the countless other grind-fests do). Not only that, but we could play *together* regardless of play styles, experience of character "level" and still have an entertaining time.
This game has a positive, supportive community and robust controls to ensure a "safe" gaming environment. Only in CoX do we feel safe allowing our kids to play without our needing to be constantly nearby as the community in the game would look our for and even go out of their way to help our kids learn the ropes and keep them "virtually safe".
Like many, I have "alt-itis", or the chronic, impulsive need to try out new powerset, character combinations and concepts. The game has never let me down, and I have developed (as have so many others) a unique stable of characters (or 'toons' as we call them) that fit many different styles of play for many different needs, from solo play heroes (or villains), task force speed runners, and jack-of-all-trades utility characters, to aggro-holding damage sponges, enemy lockdown controllers, epic masterminds and high-damage blasters.
Whether we are patrolling the streets of Paragon City keeping Atlas Park free from the Hellions, causing wanton descrution during a bank robbery in the Rogue Isles, or even fighting altenate dimensional invaders in Praetoria, City of Heroes has an impressive amount of stories, lore and exciting gameplay. No other MMO is like it, nor will one ever be in the future!"
Now to make a pass and "Like" all of those that were more than just the twitter tag :)

No, Half Life 2 officially won best game of the decade (just announced). And, if there was ever an opportunity to have given a shout out to us, well, let's just say that Tenacious D decided to make jokes about Bass Duel/Duo, or something, when announcing the award.
C'est la vie and thank you all for your effort ( ' :
-
We still made a stand, as heroes do.
And to be fair, Half Life 2 is pretty deserving of this award. Go figure, it was also released in the same year as CoH.
-
So I must say this and I will take any negative remarks. I was corrected on multiple occasions when identifying COH as a videogame, many got upset (offended even) and stated that COH is NOT a videogame! So this show is for videogames so best videogame of the decade right? COH doesn't apply if it isn't a video game? So I am confused by this thread it is a great way to get the word out but it can also come off as desperate IMHO! Anyway feel free to throw your tomatoes and lettuce heads and shout BOOOOOO!! Oooo and watch the awards tonight I probably wont but I will read about it tomorrow! :)
-
That was a month ago. Dec. 7th. Not Jan 7th. Totally missed it, sorry, dude.
Also, yeah, CoH is a videogame. I don't know why anyone would argue that point. Sure, it's an MMORPG, but that doesn't make it any less a Game that is using Video to be played. If it were the old Champions system, then sure, argument can ensue.
It's a tad bit of semantics, to be sure. Like Trekkies and Trekkers. I'm definitely NOT the latter, but I could get grouped into those by those who don't know or care to know the difference. "You are one of them Trekkers, yeah?" And reverse to them Trekkers: "Y'all are one of them Trekkies, right?"
And I would not care if I were called either, much... I'd just say "Yep, likin' the Trek." and move on with life, grinnin' like a dog, wanderin' aimlessly.
/But the point? You missed by a whole month. Nice necro. :)
-
Oh oops!! Oh well hope the turn out was good!!! Thank you for responding though. :)
